ksc1984 Posted April 14, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 14, 2014 We are wanting to take the Boston-Montreal cruise this summer, probably leaving from Boston. For those who have done this, would you recommend the Veendam or the Maasdam? We probably are not considering the Eurodam to Quebec because we like the smaller ships, but would be willing to listen to your thoughts. Thank you. rkacruiser Posted April 14, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 14, 2014 The vessel that has a port in Saguenay is the one I would choose. The scenery to this small town up and down the fjord is magnificant and the people of the community will provide you on the pier with a welcome that will live in your memory for a long time. If you are wanting the cruise to end in Montreal then you will need to choose the Maasdam. The Veendam ends and overnights in Quebec City it does not go on to Montreal. Then if flying home from Canada your options are much better from Montreal as opposed to Quebec City.

mllewis48 Posted April 14, 2014 #5 Share Posted April 14, 2014 I believe both the Maasdam and Veendam do the Canada/New England trips, the Veendam out of Quebec City and the Maasdam out of Montreal. We will take the Veendam to Quebec City on May 1st from Ft Lauderdale.
gowentgone Posted April 14, 2014 #6 Share Posted April 14, 2014 Celebrity Summit is an excellent ship and goes round trip from NJ which makes flights easier and cheaper but it does not go to Montreal but does go to Quebec City. HAL are old ships and older people. It is a great cruise.
mllewis48 Posted April 14, 2014 #7 Share Posted April 14, 2014 Please define old ships and old people? We have been with HAL since 1986 and love their ships and everything about them! Am 66 now and do not think I am old. Thanks

We will take the Veendam to Quebec City on May 1st from Ft Lauderdale. We had some friends do this voyage aboard the Maasdam a few years ago. They loved the ship and itinerary. mllewis48 Posted April 14, 2014 #9 Share Posted April 14, 2014 We've done this trip on the Carnival Glory, did not enjoy the ship at all. Last fall we were on the Eurodam, Quebec City to Ft Lauderdale, but had to leave in Bar Harbor due to family emergency. So we are doing the Ft Lauderdale to Quebec City on the Veendam next month. The Veendam does 7 day cruises to Boston and then back to QC and the Maasdam does 7 day cruises to Boston and then back to Montreal. The St Lawrence, the extreme Canadian coast and the ports are wonderful.
Rare mskaufman Posted April 14, 2014 #10 Share Posted April 14, 2014 We made our selection in preferring to spend the overnight in Quebec vs. going on to Montreal just to use the airport. If we had more time to spend in Montreal, we might have chosen differently.
chrisbu315 Posted April 14, 2014 #11 Share Posted April 14, 2014 Any ship that starts or ends in Montreal. IMHO. it is the best port of the trip. Not quite as picturesque as Quebec City, but much more to do.
Floridastorm Posted April 14, 2014 #12 Share Posted April 14, 2014 If flying out of Montreal to the US, you are automatically pre-cleared upon arrival in the US. It's considered a domestic flight and not an international flight. You do not have to go through American Immigration and Customs and you just change planes, if that is required, or walk to the baggage claim as if you were on a domestic flight. Unfortunately, we are returning to the US from Quebec City which does not yet employ pre-clearance. So, we are treated as an international flight upon arrival in the US and have to go through Immigration and Customs prior to changing planes to our domestic flight.
Winters in NZ Posted April 14, 2014 #13 Share Posted April 14, 2014 3 years ago, HAL bused passengers between Montreal and Quebec City because the water level at Montreal harbour was too high to permit the Maasdam access to that port. We were on one of those cruises in May that did a B to B, Montreal-Boston. The great amount of melting snow this spring, accompanied by frequent rains may cause this situation to reappear. Without the crystal ball in front of anyone though.....who can predict the water level situation in the St. Lawrence ?
PathfinderEss Posted April 14, 2014 #14 Share Posted April 14, 2014 Ship to Ship, the Maasdam hands down is the better ship.
