TXAlex Posted April 17, 2014 #101 Share Posted April 17, 2014 then go, have a GREAT time and don't sweat the small stuff. Like I said, Life is too short to not be happy!!! :) Oh I will likely keep this vacation, but for now I am sad that I don't get to do something I have been looking forward to for months now! I am sure once I get on the boat and get a drink in my hand, it will be the last thing I am thinking about :D
cmitch9999 Posted April 17, 2014 #102 Share Posted April 17, 2014 we sailed with Princess to Alaska about 10 years ago, the ship left Seattle 5 hrs late because they needed to super clean after a noro outbreak, we were about 4 hours delayed in Juneau, we had to skip Victoria because the ship was unable to dock. We were given $25 pp for the delayed embarkation and $3.12 refund of port charges for Victoria. At least you guys know ahead, can change if needed or get a refund. I was very disappointed but the biggest disappointment was the attitude of the higher level staff the entire cruise-- when I wrote to Princess afterward they offered. $25 discount on a future cruise( not a %).. It's been 10 yrs and we have had 2 other cruises with Princess with similar staff encounters-- not a Princess fan, give me Carnival any-day! Alaska is breathtaking and you will enjoy your time there drinking in the amazing scenery. Bon Voyage
Pine Bluff Posted April 17, 2014 #103 Share Posted April 17, 2014 Once again, they're offering refunds folks. Consider taking them. Putt putting along slowly will be bad enough going north and south, but across the pacific? Not good. Not to mention 5 days in Hawaii is not worth the passage time. Even 7 days was bare minimum. Those that don't have ressies, look into these itineraries for some deep discounts. If you find them, take them!
nybumpkin Posted April 17, 2014 #104 Share Posted April 17, 2014 This is most likely another thrust bearing problem with the azipods, or it could be similar to the Pride where one or more propulsion transformers are out of service. If it is the thrust bearing, they can run the pod at reduced load to reduce the wear on the bearing. If the pod was out completely, they would be required to have tug escorts at every port, since the redundant steering is now inoperable. As to why they would wait a year to repair this? Perhaps there are no viable drydock berth slots available on the West Coast (very limited drydocks), and/or they feel that the revenue lost due to the OBC or FCC is offset by the reduced fuel consumption and not having to budget for an unscheduled drydocking. cheng - Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting. Drydocks aren't the easiest to plan. (BTW, did you see that the new Kings Pointer has returned to the Sound?) I still haven't received an e-mail, despite checking all my folders. However, DH is contacting our PVP to see whether our FCD can be applied to the Glory cruise we booked for August but haven't paid off yet. If not, we'll just look at our options for next summer.:D
idiebabe Posted April 18, 2014 #105 Share Posted April 18, 2014 Book another ship the same week problem solved Sent from my iPhone using Forums I agree! There are other cruise lines and many have sales going on right now. If you can get the same dates or close to it, I believe I read where Carnival will reimburse for non-refundable expenses if you cancel the cruise. If that's true, they should pay your change fee if you've already booked your air and need to change the date! That's what I would do! Best of Luck with it! :)

Retired_to_Cruise Posted April 18, 2014 #107 Share Posted April 18, 2014 Is completely changing the itinerary and ridding their guest of an entire port of call drastic? Why, yes it is…in relative terms, of course. The itinerary makes the vacation, so an alteration like this is pretty major. I guess you are referring to the Caribbean because of the potential weather hazards? That’s a different issue. You know to expect certain weather at particular times a year, that’s part of the deal. This boat is not fully functioning, so they are unable to give us what we are paying for. That’s the basis of my unhappiness of their $50 offer. Again, especially because Ketchikan is my favorite port. So, get your money back from them and then you will have paid nothing for what you got - nothing! fastrock Posted April 18, 2014 #108 Share Posted April 18, 2014 Yes, I thought the same thing. By them offering the $100 of OBC let say you use it for cocktails, their actual cost for that $100 is maybe $10 of actual supplies. So they look like champs for giving us $100 when in fact it only cost them $10. Now they're walking away with all those Ketchikan port charges. If your already going to spend that $100 it's an ok deal for you but it a great! deal for carnival. The OBC is in lieu of port fees and taxes http://www.carnival.com/about-carnival/legal-notice/port-cancellation-policy.aspx REFUND OF GOVERNMENT FEES AND TAXES: If a port is cancelled from the scheduled itinerary, a refund of the government fees and taxes for the cancelled port will be provided via a shipboard credit. Still looking for answer of FCD. Does FCD mean Future Cruise Deposit or Future Cruise Discount.
fastrock Posted April 18, 2014 #109 Share Posted April 18, 2014 It matters to me a lot TPFKAH; I love Carnival, the reason why I sail them. (and I have sailed other ships)... And, how do we know other lines don't keep their ship sailing either if there was an issue, a minor one..we don't. I do believe, if it was a really serious issue, Carnival would not be sailing. A lot of people seem to be loyal to one line, and I get that. But what bothers me, is people saying Carnival, here we go again, blah blah blah. They are people not even sailing them, so how can you bash them? I was merely making a point, that it does happen on other ships, the only reason we don't hear about them so much and Carnival is because the Carnival was in the news, so here we go again Carnival. Get over it people. I love Carnival, you love RCCL, you love NCL, who cares?? Point is every line has problems. DW and I have gone off the Carnival reservation to try other cruise lines, only to return to the FUN SHIPs. IMO - CCL has the full package, they do everything very well and several things excellent, occasionally exceptional.
C&THollings Posted April 18, 2014 #110 Share Posted April 18, 2014 No change in our January Hawaii cruse yet either. There is no change to my December cruise to Hawaii. I love this 'signature' where did you find it?
cindphillips Posted April 18, 2014 #111 Share Posted April 18, 2014 (edited) I just booked our Alaskan cruise (9/2) and just checked and all ports are still listed, and several now actually have longer times in the ports...wondering why they were able to do that for the 9/2 cruise, but not for the earlier 2014 cruises? I am a new cruiser and confused about this discrepancy. Sent from my iPhone using Forums Edited April 18, 2014 by cindphillips

I am a new cruiser and confused about this discrepancy. Sent from my iPhone using Forums I believe it is because the 9/2 & 9/10 Cruises are 8 day cruises which gives them extra time to get to all our scheduled ports but in order to keep all of them, they had to switch port dates & adjust the times we get into & leave each port for the 9/10 cruise. But it says the 9/2 itinerary wasn't changed & I still believe that was because of the extra sea day they get to play with. Most of the other cruises are 7 days so there is no extra sea day in the original itinerary to play with. Edited April 18, 2014 by PhxRain
SoCalKJ Posted April 18, 2014 #114 Share Posted April 18, 2014 We don't mind, actually. We didn't care for Ketchikan when we were there in 2011 (fishing trip from hell) and I'm actually looking forward to another Sea Day. OBC, future discount and longer time in the remaining ports...? Fine with us. :)

chengkp75 Posted April 18, 2014 #117 Share Posted April 18, 2014 Just as a note, in order to make the Hawaii itinerary from Vancouver to Nawiliwili requires an average of 18 knots, so that's not really put-putting along.
Laurin612 Posted April 18, 2014 #118 Share Posted April 18, 2014 I wanted to thank everyone for their insightful comments. You've "talked me down!" :) My family and I are booked on the 7/29 cruise. It will be our 20th wedding anniversary and we're bringing our children (16 and 12) with us. I have to say, we were pretty disappointed when we first got the e-mail and started looking around at Princess and Norwegian. However, as we all know, this close out the cabins can be REALLLLLLY picked over and it would be really tough to go from a Lido deck balcony room to a lower deck porthole. Plus, the dates didn't match up with our flights and hotel arrangements. Still bummed about missing Ketchikan and kind of apprehensive about sailing on a ship with propulsion problems, but we've decided to go ahead with our anniversary cruise. We will put that 25% off a future cruise to good use. :D
Ponygal Posted April 18, 2014 #119 Share Posted April 18, 2014 Laurin612-A fellow Chicagoan! I am in the same boat (no pun intended) you are. Going at the end of May. We are going, however I never once thought of changing my plans. I have had nothing but great cruises and great Memories on my cruises. I will post a review once I return..keep and eye out for it. Have fun on your trip!
xowendyxo Posted April 18, 2014 #120 Share Posted April 18, 2014 (edited) They told us in the email what their reasoning is. The ship is going slower and the timing to get to the ports ned to be adjusted. Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk This was the exact same excuse they used on our sailing of the Pride two weeks ago. They need to get their crap together! Maybe instead of the 2.0 upgrades they need to make sure all of their ships are in working order!! I have a feeling that they are going to lose a lot of business; there were 180 cancellations on our cruise and we just missed a 7-2 stop in Freeport!! They also cancelled Freeport on our previous cruise, but the at least replaced it with a stop Little Stirrup Cay. I did book again for a Carribean cruise next March, but if they pull this again, I will cancel this time and be done with Carnival! Flying is for Planes Posted April 18, 2014 #121 Share Posted April 18, 2014 I have been caught with broken down ships before and I am not taking the chance. Its like the thin edge of the wedge. The chance of more issues are clearly greater when one already exists What CCL should be doing is explaining EXACTLY what the nature of the issue is. If its something that they can demonstrate will not further cause other problems, and they need to be very specific, maybe people would be more trusting The chance of further issues in a few months time and the possibility of cancellations is not something I will risk:eek::confused:
LC1968 Posted April 18, 2014 #122 Share Posted April 18, 2014 I completely agree that they owe their passengers an explanation of the details of the problem so that we can assess whether the ship is likely to experience FURTHER propulsion degradation between now and our sailings. You might say "Well, Carnival is better at assessing that than you could possibly be"--but they also have a conflict of interest because they don't want to lose ALL their business. TLS123 Posted April 18, 2014 #123 Share Posted April 18, 2014 For those that have never sailed in Alaska before, you actually want to cruise slowly through the Inside Passage. The scenery is breathtaking and you don't want to miss any of it. If you think you are missing Alaska because you are missing a port, that's just not true! You will be surrounded by Alaska's beauty the entire time you are in the passage. Be sure you watch for whales - we saw them from our balcony every day. Lose all their business? People will be upset whether they cancel for dry dock or keep going at a slower speed. After the Triumph mishap, I doubt Carnival would take a chance and keep that ship in the water unless they were comfortable with it. They are well aware of financial loss if your ship was doomed to break down.
CrzRani Posted April 18, 2014 #125 Share Posted April 18, 2014 Well I went back on the web site and there has been a change. They deleted a port on my June Alaskan cruise. What is the matter with them? Another reason to not sail Carnival. The only reason I did this cruise is because it was a free cabin. Never again! Gosh, I wish I got a free cabin. I sure wouldn't be complaining with a free vacation. As long as I wasn't at work and enjoying free time on someone else's dime, I'm in heaven. Thank Carnival for even offering it to you, since you seem ungrateful for it.
