How can Celebrity afford the beverage packages???

The value of taking the beverage pkg as the perk will be different for each person, as we all consume different things that are included in the packages. The $$ value listed is based on what we would have to 'PAY' for the package if purchased, not a limit on what you 'CAN' buy.

We upgraded to the premium last Nov on the Reflection because the red wine my wife likes is $14 a glass.

Here is my "RUFF" run down of a day with a Classic drink pkg on another thread

A speciality coffee each on the balcony while the wifester is putting on her face, $5 ea.

Evian or San Pellegrino with fresh squeezed juice with that second coffee at breakfast, $15 ea.

Grab a bottle water on the way to stake out a deck chair, $4 ea.

$24 each before any mind altering liquid is consumed.

A beer or the drink of the day by the pool, $6 ea

Then off to lunch, maybe a soda, or another San Pellegrino $5 ea

The sun is hot hot hot! A cold beer or drink of the day is in order, $6 ea

The burger at the Mast Grill is calling our names, it does not go down with out some liquid assistance, $5 ea, then it is time to meet friends to watch the sun set from the Sunset Bar, $6 ea. Afternoon total $28.

And the evening fun has yet to begin.

San Pellegrino and a couple of glasses of wine with dinner, and another speciality coffee with desert, $26 ea

Now it is time for some mind altering sampling to happen, or not A cocktail with friends at one of the watering holes on ship $7 ea, or 2 if we are letting our hair down!

One more bottle water on the way back to the cabin just in case we get thirsty during the night, $4. Evening total, $44.

Morning, $24, day, $28, evening $44, total $96.00 each useing the low end of the cost scale and not much mind altering substance. If you had to pay out of pocket

Some evening's we will grab another coffee ( or worse) and go and sit on deck 5 to unwind, listen to the swoosh of the waves gently breaking down the side of the ship before heading to the cabin.

What does that have to do with the OP's question which was how can Celebrity afford the free drink package?

Glad you are Zenith, but seems not to be relevant to the topic.

Let's see:

The OP asked: "How Celebrity can afford the drink packages?"

My comment was about the cost of the drink package for Zenith members.

Seems highly relevant to me.

Besides, when has relevancy become a criteria for posting? Threads often take on a life of their own. But in this case, my comments were on topic.

We aren't big drinkers so we originally requested the Free Gratuities perk for our upcoming cruise. After discovering that some of our favorite beverages were included in the Beverage Package, we figured we could get a better value with it instead of the free gratuities. Our TA was able to get it changed just before the promotion ended. According to Celebrity's description of the value of the various perks, it makes me wonder why they included perks with such a wide range of value. One perk is $300 OBC. Another is free gratuities to a maximum of $360. But the beverage package is valued up to $1,350 max - about a $1,000 more than the other two! How can Celebrity afford to be so generous with that one perk as compared to the other two?

Because I'm not a Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited shareholder I don't care how Celebrity can afford one perk or another, just as long as they do offer a perk I can use. But on my next cruise I'll sit back and ponder that very question - while sipping on my scotch on the rocks.:D

Orator if I remember correctly on our April 12 cruise on the Reflection you posted on our roll call that it was your 17th cruise this past winter with Celebrity. That cruise you became a Zenith member.

After doing all these cruises with them plus all the many others that you have done with Celebrity I can understand why they would give you all the for mentioned perks. If one would calculate the cost of all these cruises it is the least they could do for you.

Our granddaughter and her husband who worked on a cruise ship. She worked in one of the shops and he was an officer told me even if they sold two drinks from a bottle of liqueur the bottle would be paid for.

We received the drink package as one of our perks. I had 4 drinks and my husband had 2 as well as wine with dinner. Most of our non alcohol drinks were coffee and water.

The people that like to drink went for the premium package at a extra cost. I am sure that many people like ourselves did not.

Celebrity have done the number crunching and there is no possible way they would offer a program if the though that they would lose money on the program. One would think that after offering the pick your perk offer multiple times that they are not.

So they got our business because of it where they might not have and who knows what else they might get revenue from us now that they have us on board the ship. I think win win.

Bingo!

We just booked our fourth cruise in a row on a Solstice Class ship exclusively due to the drink package.

While we love Celebrity and the Solstice class ships, frankly, we're somewhat sick of them.

Unlike many others on this board, we don't particularly have any allegiance to any cruise line. We find that the perks associated with achieving status (Elite, Diamond, Platinum) on cruise lines are not worth the trade-off of having limited choices.

We're dying to try RCCL's Allure or Oasis, Princess's Royal, or NCL's Breakaway -- not because we think they'll be better than Celebrity, but because we just want a change of scenery.

However, when I factor in how much it would cost us to buy a drink package at any of those ships, they just don't come close from a value perspective.

So, for now, as long as Celebrity keeps offering their free drink packages and all the other mainstream lines continue to charge for them, we'll just keep sailing Celebrity. In turn, Celebrity will get all the money we drop on tickets, specialty restaurants (we spent a lot there), and the casino.

Again, win win.

I think Celebrity has added this 1-2-3 promo more regularly as a way to compare a cruise to an alll-inclusive. Before drink packages, you couldn't do that. I like being able to know ahead of time how much I am going to spend on the cruise without worrying about that final statement. I realize the drink package isn't really "free" - but like knowing I can plan for what my cruise will cost. Keeps me sailing instead of considering an all-inclusive. So if there are others like me, what Celebrity is doing works.

Agree! I didn't know what the Zenith perks were, I thought it was relevant and interesting. Especially because I will never be a Zenith myself! :)

It is a great inducement to book Celebrity early and at 'higher' cabin rates.

We got off the Reflection in Feb, and were so enamored with the Drink Package we booked another cruise next Jan because the 123 promo was offered just so we would not miss it.

Normally, I would have waited and looked at offerings from Princess, NCL, and X and booked later based partially on the best price. It is a great value for moderate/heavy drinkers. I am sure it also is a positive for the waitstaff. As stated earlier it may also induce passengers to spend more on

specialty dining, shopping, excursions since they know the drink expense will be nil.On a seven night Carib for us I access an approx value of $700 plus the convenience of the program.

Ok. For those who booked because of the offer it was a winner for Celebrity. For those who were going to book anyway - (or like me, booked the day before the offer and still got it) maybe not so much.

I'm not into cruise line loyalty either. I travel for the itinerary.

From reading the posts here, it is obvious how Celebrity can "afford" it --- they are getting a number of cruises booked that they would not have gotten. As far as the "value" of each perk, as others have said, it's all about the mark-up.

For us, on our Silo cruise next March, we took the OBC -- worth more than the gratituities and we never drink $200 worth -- lucky enough to be Elite and can get sufficient alcohol at the cocktail parties and/or vouchers.

Question for all of you that have had/done the drink package, I drink moscato wine, specialty coffee, ice tea, and some liquor drinks but nothing fancy, do you think it's worth it having the drink package? I heard you can get smoothies too is that true? And is the tip included? Please help!
