WiFi question

Do most of the ships have WiFi available on the ships? Are there locations on the ships where I could just sit down with my Ipad, Iphone or Kindle and use open WiFi? We will be on the Norwegian Jewel in Alaska in September so anyone know specifically about this ship? My normal vacation routine is to post a morning picture to my FB and an evening picture and I usually always go over my data plan unless I have WiFi. I was just wondering what was available on the ships. Thanks.

Yes, most ships have wifi, but it is NOT free. You will $$$$ for it. It will also be slow, so your pictures will eat up time to upload. You can either use your data plan while in Alaskan ports or go hunting for wifi. The crew usually knows where there is wifi ashore, ask them - if you want to spend your limited time ashore on FB.

 

As to the specifics of NCL's wifi, the forum for NCL is the best place to get that (and any other NCL question) answered.

I believe most cruise lines have internet availability onboard. I'm not real computer savvy, so I'm not sure that's what you're asking? There is a cost involved in using it.

Thanks, that is what I was wondering. BTW, I don't spend my whole vacation on FB I just enjoy posting a picture or two each day for by friends. They kind of expect it from me. I don't think I want to pay for internet/wifi so I won't be using it on the ship. Thanks again for the info.

The WiFi on the ships tends to be low bandwidth hence slow. Better to wait until ashore and find an internet hot spot (Cafe ?).

There are free (or very inexpensive) wifi locations at virtually every port, so you can keep in touch almost daily without putting up with the outrageous cost and frustrating slowness of shipboard connection.

Just an aside, I don't understand why you would post pictures of your vacation while on vacation. IMHO, that's advertising your house as empty.

It helps if you understand the difference between WIFI and Internet.

 

WIFI is a wireless connection - usually between a computer server and your personal device.

WIFI is generally free of charge to everyone.

 

But if you want to use that free WIFI to connect to the ship's Internet service via the server, you will have to pay for the internet connection.

 

On more modern cruise ships, you are able to use the free WIFI to connect to servers that deliver daily programs, check your onboard account, make tour or restaurant bookings, and many other services which are free of charge.

I appreciate your explanation. My husband has been trying for years to explain how all this computer stuff works, but I can't seem to get a good handle on it.

I figured someone would ask this question. We live in the country away from town with family as neighbors so our house is watched. I've lived there for over 20 years and have never had any problems. Aside from that if someone wants to come get our dinky 32 inch television, our XP computer that is basically worthless and an old TiVo system that we've wanted to replace they can have them. All the good stuff will be this us, the Ipads, the camera's, the phones. We just don't have a house full of expensive stuff.
