Room Safe Key Question

Ok - this may be a dumb question. I know you can use old credit cards or hotel room keys as the card key for the room safe and that you can have multiple cards if they have the same account number programmed on them. My question is, has anyone used a non activated gift card (like the blank ones at Walmart/Target) as a safe key and have you been able to use multiple ones to give to each person in the cabin?

I've used the gift cards as a safe key. Never have tried to use multiple cards. In my experience whatever card was used to lock it has to open it. Never thought to try 2 credit cards with the same account to open them. Not sure what the safe lock uses to determine its the "correct card" so I don't know if this would work or not.

Have you had experience using 2 cards that are for the same account?

Yes, we have used duplicate hotel room keys or casino cards in the past. That way each person doesn't have to hunt for the person that has the key.

On the Pride if I used my cabin key to lock the safe DW's would not work and vice versa.

We use one gift card, activated or not activated. We don't take the key out of the room unless we are leaving the ship for port (hidden someplace that we designated before hand). Never had a problem with someone else finding it, or accessing the safe.

I do the same. Still trying to figure out who "they" are and why they say not to.

I think the safes can corrupt the magnetic strip on the card (probably a very low occurrence) and would make your card unusable to get into your room, use in the casino, etc.

The thing I was concerned about, was that if I used my sign-n-sail card, could the cabin steward open the safe, because he has a "master card" that will open the cabin door, so why wouldn't the same master card open the safe if I used the sign-n-sale card to lock it? I don't think it's worth the risk.

I've always used my Sears "Craftsman Club" card. If I lose it, the best someone can do with the found card, is get a GREAT deal on a screwdriver. ;)

Possibly, but a quick trip to guest services gets one a new card.

My BFF and I use a McDonalds gift card with a zero balance and always hide the one card in a safe place in the room just in case we were not together and needed access to the safe...

Maybe I should start a thread on "Where do you hide your safe key".... Lol

I use my Mohegan Sun casino Card.

Couple reasons I know why you shouldn't use your sail and sign.

If someone else gets ahold of your card, they have access to your cabin and safe..

If you lost your card, you would get a new card and you would need to go through the hassle of having your safe opened

If your sail and sign goes bad and needs to be replaced, again more hassle getting the safe opened but more importantly from the ship's view, believe if room cards can open the safes, that the cabin stewards can use their cards ( don't know if they can or not) so they want guest s to use a different card

True, but why subject yourself to that potential time-waster? Depending on the time of day, you might wait 15-20 minutes or more in line.

Maybe, but I believe the risk of a card reader damaging a magnetic strip is extremely low.

and more work for the staff and the potential inconvenience to other guests at the guest service desk.

I have as much right to use guest services for whatever I need to use them for.

You certainly do but in this example by not following Carnival's recommendation to not use your room key for the safe you are using guest services for what you want, not what you need. See the difference? :)

I thought you weren't supposed to your your sign and sail card because if someone steals it from you and knows your room number, they can open the door and your safe?

Probably the best reason right here, but it's dependent on them knowing your cabin number and getting the cabin card that was used to lock the safe (we alternate between DW and myself). As I said in a previous post if we used my card to lock the safe DW's wouldn't work, so it's unlikely that the card used by the steward would work.
