Cunard Cruise Ship Gets new Single Cabins in Multi-Million Dollar Refit

Look for grade LC for the inside fare and KC for the outside fare. When you click on availability, it states 1 passenger maximum in this grade. We're doing the 12 night out of Southampton on the 14th of July and was hoping to bring along a friend who is traveling solo and prefers his own cabin, but I'm afraid, not at that price.

Here in the UK I can't find those grades at all. Inside comes up as GA, GB, GC, IA, ID, IE. Oceanview comes up as EB, EC, EF, FB, FC.

Being of an inquisitive disposition, I really wanted to see what Cunard was doing. :D I'm looking at 11 July 2015 and most of those are showing as sold out already. (I think they'll release more closer to the date. They must have been released to agents or something.)

Just checked online on Q511D. For $6727 I could have one of the new single staterooms on deck 2 (162 square feet) or a regular OV stateroom on deck 1 (197 square feet) with a King sized bed. Exactly the same price. I know which one I would choose.

I looked at QE cruises in July and October 2015 .The KC fare was coming up on the UK Cunard website.

As stated the prices were the same or in some cases more than the double occupancy outside cabins.

I think there has to be a problem in the system. Otherwise why would they bother to put in the single cabins.

All it takes is 9 people to book these solo cabins on any particular voyage, and <boom> the cabins are sold out! Depending on how these cabins are categorized, it might be offered or assigned as an upgrade for solo passengers who booked a guaranteed fare...at the very least, the cabins can be offered to travel writers, entertainers or for ill passengers/crew members requiring solo cabins. It's only 9 cabins, and I have not doubt there will be no problem filling them for various reasons.

Because their bean counters have calculated that they get more revenue from the cabin sales and onboard spend than they would get from the space that was occupied by the casino or whatever.

P&O is adding single cabins where they can but we find that the price for a single is only slightly lower than the price of single occupancy of a double cabin.

Cruise lines don't like single travellers because they don't generate enough revenue. However sometimes they realise that charging extortionate rates to solos can put off parties of several people.

I thought news of single cabins sounded so promising.

There are MANY people who travel solo and would appreciate cabins designed for their needs. There are, no doubt, MANY MANY MANY more people, who might try ship travel, if a solo cabin was offered…. at a fair price.

Cunard seems to be missing the mark. A shame.

Has anyone seen a revised deck 2 plan?

It will be interesting to see what they have done when I am on board in 2 weeks time.

Please tell us what you found out when you were on board.

Looking to book one for my son in January 2015.

The refit seems to have been a success (not that I know what QE looked like beforehand). The TVs on the walls in front of the beds is a good use of space. My only gripe about the refit is the fluff from the new carpet gets on anything that touches it - so don't throw clothes on the floor like I did :)

I asked to see one of the new single cabins on deck 2. Sadly I waited until the last night after voyage sales had closed. Otherwise, I was told I could have seen a room.

So, apologies for my poor recon mission. I was simply so busy every day of the cruise I forgot until the last night.
