Venice Alert for Sunday, 8 June

Warning: On Sunday, 8 June, Venice will host the 40th Annual Vogalonga, which is a rowing-boat parade/festival/race that last year featured over 1,000 boats. This event will occupy the Grand Canal and St. Mark's Basin for most of the day (10:00 a.m. or earlier to 3:00 p.m. or later), with all other boat traffic banned -- including vaporetti, water taxis, and everything else.

So if you were planning to be in Venice and get to or from your cruise ship by vaporetto or water taxi on that day, you'd better come up with Plan B. (And of course in Venice there is no Plan B, except walking).

Wow...very helpful, hoftraveler! We are arriving in Venice on 6/7 and departing on 6/9. We are staying at the Hilton Molino Stucky and planning to use their shuttle to Zattere and St. Mark's. We have a 10:45 a.m. Secret Itineraries tour planned on 6/8. Do you think that we will be stuck at the Stucky?!?

I don't think you'd have any problems getting the vaporetto out to the islands. Just because they won't be running on the Grand Canal doesn't mean the entire system shuts down. Buses run in New York during the Thanksgiving Day parade, just not along or across the parade route. Vaporettos to Murano and Burano leave from Fondamente Nuove, on the other side of the main land mass.

No, because the Hilton is not on the Grand Canal. Yes, things will be very busy. But, no you won't be locked in the hotel.

Thanks, Bruce. The Hilton pretty much confirmed this for me yesterday saying that the race starts at 9 a.m. in the San Marco area but they should have moved on from there in 45 to 60 minutes.

SJUne66, you might want to take a look at this thread I created on Tripadvisor. A local person offered some pretty helpful, detailed advice.

Thanks from me as well! We are leaving out of Venice on the MSC Fantasia the day of the race. I'm really feeling good about our decision the stay at a hotel near the P. Roma.
