Carnival Cancellation due to illness

Recommended Posts

My family is traveling on a cruise with six people my sister-in-law is seriously ill and unable to go She wants me to replace her on the cruise we still have 10 days. While we certainly expect to pay a change fee, travel agent says Carnival is saying we have to pay an extra $800 in order to switch. There are children involved and it would be very reassuring if their aunt could go on this trip since their mother cannot. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help is much appreciated.

What fare did she book under?

Many fares can have a change in passengers (one needs to remain) for $50. There are some fares (Early Saver) where no changes can be made. For these fares the new pax would have to pay the going rate.

Are there any agent's fees involved.

You can try to plead your case with Carnival, but I'd think that, if you want to change places, you're going to have to pay the $800.

What's happening (in Carnival's eyes) is that your sister-in-law is cancelling her cruise and you are booking into her spot. As a new cruiser, you pay the prevailing rates for that cruise.

call Carnival directly then ask for a supervisor. If that supervisor says no. call another time and get a different one. just keep trying

Since she booked thru a TA dont think they will talk to her. Would suggest a 3 way conversation with TA and Carnival.

I agree with the three way conversation. I have had to inquire about last minute substitution while booked under early saver. It can be done for a $50 change fee up to a certain date. I am unsure of the exact date. (sorry) But $800 to substitute someone else just doesn't sound right. A three way with OP, TA and a carnival supervision would be most beneficial.

If you have documentation from a doctor that your SIL is unable to travel and you are wishing to substitute a person in her place, there is a good possibility that Carnival will let you do that even if you do not have insurance. Especially since your SIL's children are still going. I agree with above poster about getting a supervisor in a 3-way call w/ your TA. I dealt with a great supervisor previously.

1) This is one of the downsides of using a TA. It makes things complicated when problems come up

2) Did she purchase insurance? That would come in handy now.

As others have said, depending on the rate you booked you may have to pay the current going rate.

I'm curious if the TA is a cruise specialist or just a TA..... Huge difference .

I would think a cruise specialist could get it done as they know who to talk with directly, I've seen them pull of things people thought impossible .
