Leaving on the Fantasy out of Charleston on Wednesday (yay!). It looks like there is a hurricane/tropical storm forming in the Atlantic. Anyone experience anything like this? I'm a little concerned. :(

This is experienced most years by many cruisers. The Captain will be closely monitoring the storm and will be sure to stay well clear of it. You may end up having your itinerary adjusted if the storm is expected to make land fall in any port(s) you are scheduled to visit. I haven't looked at a map but most Atlantic storms travel slowly and don't impact land for quite some time after they form.

It looks like a tropical depression is expected to form by midweek according the National Hurricane Center:

We live in northwest Florida and have had 2 category 3 hurricanes come over or close to over our house. Fortunately we received no significant damage. We have also cruised around or ahead of many storms. Based on current weather reports it is definitely too early to become really concerned about this potential storm. We have seen so many potential storms never develop or change track. Closely follow weather reports and know that it is likely that the worst you might experience is a change in itinerary or some rough seas. Good luck.

Not all tropical storms become hurricanes.

We leave on Sunday and I have not looked at the weather once! This isn't the Captains 1st rodeo. It is my vacation and I am going to enjoy it and let the captain worry about any storms.

I live in Fl and am cruising on Sunday. I've been checking the marine forecast and it really doesn't look that bad. Highest sea prediction is 7 ft. You really don't notice that. If it develops, it is only set to become a depression, weak tropical storm at most. Fingers crossed, everything should be fine. I won't start worrying too much until later in the week, as the storm prediction has changed every 12 hours & as early in the season as it is could easily fall apart within hours. :)

We traveled during a storm last August. We had a change of itinerary. We missed HMC :( and Nassau, we went to St Thomas and San Juan instead and went to Grand Turk on a different day. But the Captain kept us all safe and we had smooth seas. They don't want to but you or these ships, which cost $$$$, in harms way.

I totally agree. I have lived in central Florida since 1958. As you said it is way to early to start worrying. Pay attention but don't worry. I don't even watch the weather on TV anymore because they hype everything for the purpose of ratings. The five day forecast is usually way off. Even the National Hurricane Center (Jeff Masters) has really become irrelevant IMHO because of his annual predictions meaning nothing for the past decade or so.

Living in central Florida you do have to keep an eye on these things and I always go to http://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/?index_region=at I get a quick feel for what is going on without all of the hype. If I listened to our local news here in Tampa I wouldn't do anything but grind my teeth, pull my hair out and pray from June until November. I swear it has gotten so bad if somebody belches in Africa the weather channel reports a potential hurricane forming. It is all about hype and ratings.

I was a first responder and a member of Task Force 3 that went to Biloxi after Charlie so I don't take this stuff lightly but I sure won't stop living for six months every year.

Okay I am off my soapbox.

It's name is Arthur. At this point it's a low pressure formation that is likely to become a tropical storm later this week.

As all who have experienced a named tropical storm know, they also can cause quite a bit of damage and disrupt travel.

Yes indeed, and I am watching it also, as I live in SE Florida. They are finally getting an airplane into it today to check it out and report back, and I think we will know more by this evening. Right now there is just a lot of speculation and spaghetti charts that could be meaningless as to direction.

Yes, the captain knows what to do, but the ship is a cruise ship, not an ocean liner. Thus, despite the captain's best efforts you might just get some rough seas if Arthur develops into a full blown tropical storm, and cruise ships don't handle that so well. Well, they sort of do, put the pax don't!

We were on a Princess cruise one year during Wilma and we never knew it. The captain took us around it, but we did miss Cozumel. We did have to hurry to the ship because they were closing the port very early, but that's the only time we ever knew there was a hurricane. I wouldn't worry, they won't take you anywhere there is danger.

Having lived in south Florida for many years, know that things change hourly down here! Agree with above poster - if you must look at the weather reports we really like weather underground......;)

However, last we saw, paths have it moving up the east coast and not staying around here. DH is a hurricane preparedness specialist for his company and they are just watching it right now (they have properties all over the US including the eastern seaboard). Some fizzle out and some develop - they are unpredictable and we have learned to just be prepared. For a cruise, your ports may have to change and seas may be a little bumpy, but June begins hurricane season, so it's a risk you have to take booking now. Know they monitor closely, so no worries!!! But it seems to look pretty good for the Caribbean.....:)

It rains every day here now in the summer, (so those of you who see that 30% or 40% rain chance - that's every day!!) so bound to have some rain, but old saying is "It's Florida - wait a 1/2 hour"!! LOL :D

For example, my area says 80% rain today - right now it's hot, a few clouds in the sky and mostly sunny!! Later this afternoon, fully expect some rain, but my advice is like some of the above - don't glue yourself to the weather reports - it will be fine and weather will great!

Yes, it's been named Arthur, and it looks like it's gonna come up the coast, with most models keeping it out to sea. May churn up the Atlantic in doing so. May make for a wet Fourth as well.

Ugh. This is NOT good news!:mad::mad:

I am not worried about the cruise, however, we are flying down to FLL on Friday, and spending the night in MIA before our cruise on Saturday..

I hate flying.

I hate flying even MORE if there is turbulence.

Arthur better head out east.:D:D

in 2012, we were chased by Issac for our entire vacation --

Started while on the Destiny heading into Nassau -- could see it in the distance -- rough water but not too bad -- chased us into port in Miami where we suffered torrential downpours -- then went way west and left us alone while we spent a week at Disney world -- then we flew home to Toronto and got wached by it here!

Just added some excitement to the vacation!

I've told this store several times, but it is worth repeating to quell concerns.

Carol & my first cruise was in September 2004. We decided to drive to Port Canaveral from Baltimore. We traveled south through the devastation of several hurricanes. We got to Georgia and there were VMS all over I-95 urging motorists to fill up with gas before entering Florida as they had no electricity to pump it out of the ground.

We got to the Port Canaveral/Cocoa Beach area on Thursday night for a Saturday cruise. The devastation was unbelievable. Zachary's restaurant (right next to the Radisson) was closed, their sign was completely gone. There was a church in Cocoa Beach that had the steeple embedded in its roof. We were told that we may have to be bused to Miami as the silt had blocked the entrance into Port Canaveral.

On Saturday we awoke to news that the Port Canaveral was open. We boarded for our Western Caribbean adventure. We cleared the opening of the port, took a right and then found out that we were now going to have an Eastern Caribbean adventure. We headed for St Maartens. As we cleared their dock, we then found out we were NOT going to St Thomas as another hurricane was forming. So we had an extra sea day.

We would have never known that there were hurricanes around, if we weren't told. Our extra sea day was so calm, like sailing on glass. It's a big area of water and they do everything they can to keep everyone safe and calm.

We have sailed several times in hurricane season and have always enjoyed those cruises.

I have been looking at the weather reports and it looks like it is going to form into a tropical storm I am very concerned as the system is moving north and looks pretty bad for Friday. We are flying from Dublin to Philadelphia and then onto orlando I hope the airports will not close. Can anyone tell me what normally happens during weather like this.

The airports won't close. You might get a few bumps flying across the Atlantic. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/AT01/refresh/AL0114W5_NL+gif/054232W5_NL_sm.gif
