Fortress of Louisbourg - Tour/Excursion Company

Recommended Posts

Would really like to viist Fortress of Louisbourg on this trip. Hoping to find a cost effective way of doing so. Renting a car would not be an option (tried renting a car last year which fell through so rather not take a chance). I looked at Blue Diamond & Molega Tours. Thier prices are comaparable if not more than HAL. This would be for just myself. Any reommendations would be greatly appreciated.

(Sorry, the above post was meant for another thread.)

As for Sydney, there is a real lack of private tour options, so if you cannot rent a car, book what you can get. You can google for information about these companies.

To my knowledge, there is no public transport to Louisbourg Fortress. The only way I can see for you to go to the Fortress in a cost efficient manner is to post in your roll call to share a ride with people who have already booked a rental car (although I realize your experience in that matter was not very good).

I do not like booking group excursions in general but because I was aware of transportation issues, I did this year. I took the HAL 4 hours tour at a whooping 80+ $. The guide I had, Ana Marie was excellent.

Is it worth spending the big $$$ to do the ship's tour in mid-September after the character actors have left?

Most but not all character actors will have left. You will be there in the shoulder season like I was in the beginning of June.

When I took the tour, there were only about 8 actors. With the bus tour one of them, a soldier gave us a gun fire explanations and demo. Others working in the Inn gave us explanations about the trade between France and Nouvelle- France. They showed us the traditional way of making a chocolate drink. People not on the HAL trip did not have access to that.

One of the highlights of the tour were the explanations on Cape Breton Ana Maria gave us on our way there.

Apparently, from what I can read from the Parcs Canada website there are 2 tours per day at the Fortress per se which you can book. See:

http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/lhn-nhs/ns/louisbourg/visit/heures-hours.aspx

In conclusion, I would say, if there is 2 or more of you, I would rent a car and book the Parcs Canada Fortress tour on your own. If you are alone or don't want the hassle of a rental car I would say the HAL tour is worth it.

We were there in May. Although the entire site wasn't ready yet, a 1 hour guided tour was. We had taken a taxi tour with 2 other couples and the cost was reasonable. We also managed to squeeze in a visit to the coal mine. I think it's worthwhile.

Lou or Marsha

What was the cost for the tour ??

We are there a few days earlier next year so still debating whether to go to Louisburg or not

Seeing all the posts on the no shows for the car rentals I gave up on that idea ;)

Thanks

Lyn

  • 1 month later...

We will be there in low season and its my understanding that the place is basically empty unless you take the ships tour, then a couple of areas are open and there are one or two actors working. We normally stay away from ships tours but we may be taking this one.
