Any Sun fun lately?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I am getting withdrawal symptoms- haven't cruised in almost a year!

I am anxiously awaiting my cruise in Feb. on the Sun. I haven't seen any posts lately from "Sun" cruisers. Can anyone share any little tidbits of info to look forward to?;)

The Sun is in Alaska right now and it seems like Alaska cruisers don't post on CC as much as other cruisers. At least that's how it seemed last summer when I was anxiously awaiting my turn on the Sun.

But it's a great ship and I'm sure you will love it.

Its been a year since we were on the Sun and I miss that ship like crazy. The crew was fantastic and of course Alaska is not to be missed.

One thing we learned after being on the ship a few days was that instead of going to the regular buffet you go to the other side, there is a small buffet and very few people. Its where the sports bar is.

The National Park Service will board the ship around 6:30 in the morning on Glacier Bay day. If you are awake at that time, it is really neat to watch. They will start their talk around 7:30 and it is well worth going and listening to. Take your binoculars with you as people will share info on animal sitings with you.

I did a review of our Alaskan Cruise if you have not seen it you might take a peak http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1867710

The Sun has a strange lay out but you will get used to it. At one point it was one of the Hawaiian ships and it was revamped. Sometimes you have to go through one thing to get to another. Such as, you have to go through the casino to get to the shops.

Her crew was fantastic and although I know many of them have gone on to other ships now, they seem to be overly happy to be on the Sun

I know you will have a great trip and I look forward to hearing or reading your review when you get back

Love the Sun...although the layout is a bit odd...but you'll get use to it. She does have a Spinnaker lounge and a Great Outdoors, both of which we really like on the ships that have them. The Sun's mini suites are the best on any of the NCL ships.

I believe that it was her sister ship the Sky that sailed in Hawaii as the Pride of Aloha. The Jade also was in Hawaii as the Pride of Hawaii. The third one is still in Hawaii sailing as the Pride of America. I don't think that the Sun was ever part of NCL America, although she may have done Hawaii itineraries with the stop at Fanning Island. :)

I am not on the Sun until November and I can't wait! My sister has sailed on her and has me so excited. It seems she is much like the Spirit that I have sailed on and loved. I am looking forward to the Great Outdoors and Las Ramblas in the late afternoon.

I always read your posts about your adventures and enjoy them very much!

I am l interested in this Las Ramblas- is this the tapas restaurant?

Las Ramblas is the tapas restaurant/bar. It has hot & cold tapas which change daily. You can also get a pitcher of white or red Sangria here.

We really enjoyed cruising on the Sun in Feb this year. We are on the Sun the week before you in 2015. Repeat the fun!

No one has anything to report?:(

Thanks for starting this thread. I think, at the rate the cabins are going, that the Sun must be very popular. I'm so glad we booked when we did. :D

As you might be able to see, we're cruising from Tampa in December so I'm happy to get any additional information as well. :p

Just a question about the lovely Sun: I've seen it mentioned a few times regarding the "unusual/strange" layout of the ship that you apparently get used to.

Is it the layout on deck 6 with the split cabin layout... where some cabins (OD - IF) are sort of layered, or is the whole ship that has a funky design that I'm not seeing on the deck plans?

TIA

Yes, I am interested in the layout also.

I know being on the Jewel in the past I really enjoyed the Great Outdoors area, which the Sun has from what I understand. I did not having an area like that on the Dawn.

I did a search for the Sun's Great Outdoors and found a nice little video. Enjoy :D

I'm on the Sun right now in Skagway. We're having a GREAT cruise. Today is rainy but the past two days have been great. We saw 6 humpbacks yesterday on an excursion out of Juneau. Lots of eagles, one bear, many harbor seals...

A nice quite spot for breakfast is Modernos. They have waffles, eggs, fruits, bacon, sausage, juice, coffee, rolls/Danishes and other quick foods set up as a small buffet (waffles, eggs, omelets cooked to order). Quicker than the MDR and less crowed then the garden café and great out doors.
