Women In Shorts MDR - Casual Night

I'm trying to remember after only one cruise, shorts *are* acceptable in MDR during breakfast and lunch, correct? From all official rules, etc. We did most breakfasts in WJ and lunches in port on port days, only remember one or two lunches in MDR and can't remember what everyone was wearing. This is in reference to Freedom of the Seas

If the sign at the entrance of the MDR says "no shorts during the evening meal". Why would you ask us if shorts are OK ???? read the sign...

The ships basically have a policy now that allow shorts in the MDR.

What makes them "fancy and dressy"? I particularly love that argument. Shorts are shorts for the most part unless they're denim or full of holes.

 

RCI guidelines/suggestions for casual nights are:

 

Casual: Sport shirts and slacks for men, sundresses or pants for women

Smart Casual: Jackets and ties for men, dresses or pantsuits for women

 

Now, I rarely see men in jackets and ties on Smart Casual night, but I also rarely see anyone in shorts on any night.

Maybe its because my Bermuda cruise is just 2 months away, but this topic reminded me of my first trip to Bermuda 25 years ago, when i first saw men in a dressy restaurant in suitcoat, tie, and ... gasp ... Bermuda shorts.

 

On a trip to Scotland I was introduced to formalwear that included dress kilt - knees definitely showed

 

I also once showed up on formal night in the same casual slacks and blouse I wore on the ship - my luggage arrived on day 5 of a 7 day cruise. A couple who hadn't heard the woes of my luggage debacle were highly verbal in their view of my offence of the dress code.

 

what is acceptable is sometimes matter of location, circumstance, as well as personal preference

nowdays i can accept almost any attire of my tablemates. it doesnt affect my cruise experience if your choice of attire is not consistant with mine, or vice vers.

Serious question for those against shorts in the MDR. 1. Is it ok to wear a skirt that is above the knee? 2. what is the difference between that and shorts right above the knee besides a seam in the crotch area? I'm just not understanding the difference.

Just like I wouldn't wear a jean skirt in the MDR, I woudn't wear jean shorts. However, if I can wear a black above the knee skirt, I just might want to wear my black "DRESSY" at the knee shorts. Maybe some of you would find it useful to skim the pages of a fashion magazine every once in awhile.

Maybe it is just as appropriate if not more to question the sanity of those who can't (or refuse to) understand the simple statement "shorts are not allowed in the MDR for dinner." It doesn't say "some shorts" are not allowed or "casual shorts" are not allowed or skirts are not allowed. It says shorts are not allowed. Pretty simple statement that any sane person should be able to understand. ;)

Hello, we just got off the Allure this morning.

We had 2 formal nights and 5 casual nights. No smart casual this time.

I did see some people (men, woman and children) wearing nice shorts and shirts on casual night and they did not seem out of place or dressed inappropriately.

I wasn't questioning the sanity of the "rule followers". However, you can take that to an extreme. I'm talking about the people who said "what are dressy shorts", like there is no such thing. I thought my post was very clear on that point.

RCI is famous - or infamous - for their uneven enforcement of rules, certainly not just this one. The rule is enforced exactly like most RCI rules - sometimes it is & sometimes it isn't.

 

I guess for some, that means you're free to just ignore them all... :rolleyes:

Sigh.... No, we're not "wondering" what dressy shorts are. The point is, everyone has a different idea of what some people think fits in that category. For those of you under 45-50 who still have firm, lean legs, short dressy shorts look great. For those of us, who at one time had fabulous legs, time does take it's toll and I will not wear that short of shorts anymore. Although my DH still thinks I have great legs.;)

 

That said, I don't see what you posted as being "dressy" or "elegant". What I see are short shorts made out of nice material (not denim or khaki) but that doesn't make them dressy. Current where? I haven't been anywhere dressy than anyone has worn shorts to and we eat at nice restaurants, go to the theatre, etc.

 

If I wore shorts to work, I would be sent home. Heck, even the girls wearing short tight dresses to work are not seen as professional at all. Most work places have dress codes.

The truth - and the problem - is that there is no definitive definition of "dressy shorts" so if you try to allow only "dressy shorts" you'll have people claiming everything from jean cutoffs to athletic shorts are "dressy."

Well I guess it does have to do with age. Most current fashions and the idea of elegant or dressy pertains to generations I suppose. I live near NYC and that's typically where I go to eat. Dressy shorts are everywhere at the very finest of restaurants.

That we live in an increasingly casual world is undeniable, but the argument of "it's your vacation" doesn't hold up - if you showed up on the pool deck a natural, you would be quickly escorted away; if you walk into the Windjammer barefoot or in a bathing suite, you will be asked to leave. It may be "your" vacation, but there are 2000 to 3000 other folks sharing the same space, so a reasonable respect for others is not out of the question. Is it all that much work to put on a pair of slacks or a skirt than to put on a pair of shorts? I don't think so.

Since following simple rules is so important to you (and others, not meaning to just pick on you) I assume that you never drive over the speed limit.

 

Most people I know do drive over the posted speed limit because they know its not enforced most of the time. Of course if you happen to find a cop who really wants to enforce it, its going to cost you a lot more than a walk back to your cabin to do a quick change. Yet, almost everyone seems the ignore the simple posted limit that any sane person should be able to understand.

The rules may say that there are no shorts, but people are wearing shorts. No one is enforcing the rule. It's a pretty useless rule. At the end of the day, when it all comes down to it, no one really cares.
