AHOY SHIPMATES,

I have read all three threads on the new BANS, a total of over 40 pages of posts, some very interesting comments.

NOW ....I wonder how long it will be before someone is offended or bumped into by a drunk and starts crusading to bring back PROHIBITION on Cruise Ships.

Also there was a post regarding offensive odors , and wants to ban "old lady perfume". That's DUMB, why not just ban OLD LADIES ? LOL

It really is sad that others feel so justified in imposing their will on others. It kind of makes you wonder where it will end? Because rest assured, this is just the beginning.

Just like when my Mom used to smoke in the car with us as kids...

Despite second hand smoke not being a health risk in your opinion I hope you roll down your windows when imposing your smoke on your children Mom.

When I was a smoker we booked balconies so I could smoke. Now as a non-smoker we have gone back into our cabin because of a chain smoker next door. I see both sides of the argument but the right to smoke/harm yourself doesn't trump my right to enjoy my space.

I don't think that anyone is realistically asserting that a non-smoking casino won't be patronized. However, as a counterpoint to your statistics, consider that Missouri's (smoking permitted) casinos generated approximately $1.74 billion in casino revenue for the FYE 6/30/13. (Source: businessweek)

Missouri has THIRTEEN casinos, compared to FOUR in Maryland. It follows that Missouri revenue should be higher.

I'm not much for complaining on a normal basis. However I think that this is crap. I smoke like 2-3 cigs a day. Period. I'm totally ok with the limited smoking areas on the ship, but the balcony is taking it too far! I mean....REALLY people? Some of the perfume and body odor people carry around with them gags me....can we ban smelly people too? As I nurse I fully understand the dangers of smoking, but this has taken it too far.

I'm not sure why Carnival couldn't have allowed smoking on the balconies on one side of the ship or even just the back half. It makes all of the sense in the world, I have several friends and family members who do not smoke, yet smoke does not bother them and I'm sure they would book a smoking side.

I hope the nonsmokers like all of the gambling I will be joining them for...cigarette in hand...penny slots of course:) That casino is about to get nasty really fast!

Being a smart consumer, I called and downgraded both of my two booked cruises to interior rooms.....saved a TON. Rant over.[/

We have never had trouble with smoke from another balcony, but perhaps that is just luck or the odds since JH says only 10% of the cruisers smoke. Carnival main purpose is to generate profit so I am sure they have done research that makes then believe banning smoking on balconies will result in economic gain for them. While you downgraded, others are saying they are upgrading to balconies now that they can be sure they will not have issues with smoke on them. Other cruisers who defected to RCCL when they banned balcony smoking say they will now come back to Carnival. It is rumored that NCL will go to non smoking balconies in January of 2015. Since HA is operated by Carnival Corporation, I would be surprised if they did not also adopt this policy in the near future. Only time will tell if this was a smart move by Carnival.

Stomp your feet, hold your breath, or whatever, but Carnival has listened to a majority of its customers, and, if people have a problem with it, the best thing to do is to take your business elsewhere.

As previously said, people vote with their money, so, cast your vote!

Many things are dangerous for us... I chose to minimize where I can. Not getting into the argument of whether smoking/2nd hand smoke is dangerous. As a nurse I've seen too much to be told otherwise. Every other medical professional on this board can talk the same talk.

How about this angle. Someone standing 6 feet away from me smoking may or may not physcially bother me depending on which way the wind blows. Smoke/fumes of ANY kind make cough, burns my throat and sinuses. I avoid it wherever/whenever I can. I quit 15 years ago for a reason. You have the right to smoke but do you have the right to make me feel physically ill when it's wafting toward me? No. Try this analogy. My standing in front of you coughing and sneezing my cold or flu germs all over you. Do you like it when someone does that to you? Do I have a right to do that? No. It would surely make you angry and..... ill......

There has to be a compromise and I think Carnival just implemented it. Putting up the blast shields and going to have a great day! ;)

If this is true, then it looks like Carnival feels their crew members "deserve a raise" again. Instead of paying their employees more, they'll happily pass it on to the consumers whenever they "feel" that they "deserve a raise." Or at least, that is the phrase they used in 2011.

While I firmly believe those guys earn all the money they get, I agree with you. It is not up to us to pay Carnival employees salary. If Carnival wants to give their ship staff a raise, give them a raise…don't make me give them a raise. I will give more if I see an exceptional situation, their livelyhood shouldn't depend on me, they should depend on me for that extra beer on their 2hrs off they may get a week.

I don't mind tipping at all, but raising the automatic gratuity is kind of underhanded if you ask me.

That was an entirely non-smoking ship in a fleet of ships that allowed it. Also did not depart from a premium port.

Can you smoke in an airplane? Can you smoke in the doctors office? Can you smoke on public school or library grounds? Can you smoke at McDonalds? It's never going back to the way it was.

Ever spent 8 days 24 hours a day on an airplane? Dr's Office? Public School or Library Grounds?

No, I do not like being coughed or sneezed on. No, I do not wage a campaign with Carnival to have them banned from cruising.

Of course the PVP loses out on potential points, but it was Carnival who caused it in the first place, not the PVP. I hope Carnival recognizes this.

Rules were meant to be broken. Who here hasn't exceeded the legal speed limit? There are stiff fines for those, too, but it makes it makes people happy to bend the rules. Smoking on balconies will go the same way. And by the way - Speeding KILLS.

Speeding does not kill, wrecking does.

So, now you will enjoy a smoke free balcony, your "space". But, you enjoyed "your space" when you did smoke, didn't you?

Ok, so you're saying that some cruises leave port and don't ever go to any place for 8 whole days before going back to the original port ?

lmk which one, thanks !

After my next cruise it's back to NCL until they ban it on balconies. I am a very considerate smoker . I have always had smokers next to me on balconies. There are very few places in public that one can smoke and I see a very smoky casino and Lido which will be the next to have the ban. If they are going to do that then they may as well ban drunks who have physically harmed people on my CCL cruises. Once the ships become entirely smoke free, the cruise lines will suffer financially because there are just not enough non smokers to fill their ships. My message to CCL...stop the new builds you are in for a rocky ride.

Hilarious. That's what you hope will happen but reality contradicts your hopes. Trust me the cruise line isn't knowingly going to make policies that will make them less money unless required to by law.

I actually come back now that Carnival is no longer the Ashtray of the Seas. Now it's time to fix the casino or at least have some smoke free nights.

If they don't provide some smoke free times I'd be disappointed in Carnival. I'm a smoker, the non smokers caused this problem of casino congestion, but I agree about some smoke free times for you. I think elegant night would be a good choice.

Ok so I will ammend my post to say spend most of the time, the whole argument about Dr's offices and airplanes still does not apply. It is what it is at this point and people will just have to decide what is the best course of action for them to have an enjoyable vacation.

Also plenty of transatlantics have more than 8 sea days though they do not return to the same port.
