Smoking on your balcony is out! Gratuities are going up.

Recommended Posts

While I firmly believe those guys earn all the money they get, I agree with you. It is not up to us to pay Carnival employees salary. If Carnival wants to give their ship staff a raise, give them a raise…don't make me give them a raise. I will give more if I see an exceptional situation, their livelyhood shouldn't depend on me, they should depend on me for that extra beer on their 2hrs off they may get a week.

I don't mind tipping at all, but raising the automatic gratuity is kind of underhanded if you ask me.

Either pay more in tips or pay more to cruise. It balances out

I'm a smoker, the non smokers caused this problem of casino congestion....

How? Not being argumentative, just curious as to why you think non-smokers have made casinos more conjested.

No, I do not like being coughed or sneezed on. No, I do not wage a campaign with Carnival to have them banned from cruising.

Carnival has not banned smokers from cruising. Smokers just have to walk to get to a designated smoking area which might cause them to try to use lung capacity they don't have. I had nothing to do with a campaign against smoking on the balconies but am glad they are.

Reread my analogy. Do you truly not understand that my right to not be made physically ill by your smoke wafting my way trumps your right to light up wherever you please. You cannot reason with the unreasonable. Have a good day. :)

Just curious and maybe you have been asked and addressed but I noticed that you're cruising on RCI who also has the same policy as Carnival. If you're so against a company adopting this policy why cruise with them?

Asked and answered - and I thought I deleted that from my signature! I cancelled the RCI cruise as soon as I learned of their policy.

Sure. Sounds simple. So you wake up before everyone else in your cabin. Go brush your hair, brush your teeth, get dressed and climb umpteen stairs to do something that, in the past all you had to do was sneak behind a curtain and step out onto your balcony to do.

Do you not understand that a puff of smoke will not make anyone physically ill any more than the car in front of you does or a campfire does or a wood burning fire place does or any other combustible on the planet does?

When some smoke from the smokestack gets blown in your direction while you sit on your balcony will you begin campaigning to have all cruise ships use alternative fuels? Because that has all the carcinogens in it that a cigarette does and then some! Where's the outrage about that? There is none because people just accept that as part of the package.

I could not agree more.

Of course the fact that about 9 out of 10 of your customers are non-smokers might have something to do with the change.

Ok so I will ammend my post to say spend most of the time, the whole argument about Dr's offices and airplanes still does not apply. It is what it is at this point and people will just have to decide what is the best course of action for them to have an enjoyable vacation.

Also plenty of transatlantics have more than 8 sea days though they do not return to the same port.

Thanks and agreed !

As I've stated on these boards, my drug of choice is caffeine.

If I could no longer enjoy it in my room or balcony, I would gladly schlepp to an area where I could enjoy it.

That's just me and I would look forward to go shopping for an acceptable outfit I could quickly put on in the morning, in order to get that coffee and sit comfortably on deck.

Only my opinion that the change in my routine would not make the experience/vacation less worth it.

It doesn't matter. None of your comparisons makes any difference whatsoever. You seem to be the very vocal minority forcing your family to vacation how YOU want to accommodate YOU. So go enjoy it! If you can no longer enjoy a cruise that's a shame, but all these comparisons are pointless. I don't stick my face over the exhaust of a wood burning furnace and inhale it, that would be unpleasant whether it was statistically unsafe or not. I don't shove my face in front of diesel exhausts. I stay away from smoking areas. From a health and safety perspective there is NO downside to banning balcony smoking. From a monetary standpoint all signs seem to point to upsides.

It is done. The decision has been made. You are very passionate in your feelings but you SHOULD have been contacting corporate before a change was made to let them know how you felt and what you wanted. Now you can only vote with your wallet, and should.

Wondering where that figure came from. I was not polled. Nor were any of the 20+ folks I have cruised with.

She will never agree. She feels that her right to smoke and harm others is more important

I am not harming others any more than the smoke from the smokestack is. If I am harming anyone, it is myself. I have as much right to smoke as drinkers have to drink. I think the majority of smokers on cruises have been considerate of their neighbors, I know I am.

LOL. And yet YOU forcing ME to vacation how YOU want to accommodate YOU is righteous!

Then why on earth would you shove your face in front of a waft of smoke on a cruise ship?

Only the zealots spam corporate with their opinions. It has obviously worked for them. And I have voted with my wallet and I am sure many others will as well.

A contract is a contract and yes I will not apologize for standing up for myself, to you or anybody else

And contracts are voidable too. By either party under certain circumstances

So does this mean your are in favor of making the gratuity mandatory and just adding it as a surcharge

into the cruise cost like is done with port fees and taxes charges ?

I don't see it as a gratuity anyway and agree these charges are the main part of many Carnival employees salary.

Cheapos wouldn't be able to take take gratuity's off and we could all stop the pretense .

These amounts are absolutely salary and shouldn't be discretionary .

I am not sure of your last trip to Europe but they are following the trend as everyone else is doing. The majority of countries have banned smoking in all public places. The first time I went I could not get away from it. Now there are no issues with restaurants, stores, hotels, etc. Heck even Ireland has banned smoking in pubs! :p

Spain and Italy sure haven't followed suit! Spain in particular, or I guess I should say Barcelona. You could not walk one block without seeing more smokers than you could count on both hands and both feet.

Your balcony is an outside area and everyone should be able to do what they choose in their own space.

Cool, so I choose to NOT smell disgusting cigarette smoke on my balcony. Sadly many times the person on the balcony next to me can take that choice away. That's the problem.
