Smoking on your balcony is out! Gratuities are going up.

Recommended Posts

I am not thrilled about no smoking on balconies. Imagine the casino bar, the entire floor would be a fog of smoke if every smoker went there instead of their room. I sincerely hope they ban it on port side though, then people who smoke can book starboard side balconies (if I remember starboard is the smoking side on deck). Non smokers can use the port side balconies everyone happy.

+10 for common sense.

I got an email from Carnival today announcing the new smoking policy and the new tipping guidelines effective October 9th. The email also says that guests who have pre-paid their gratuities as of July 7, 2014, will not be affected by this change.

I'm a caffeine addict.

If Carnival or any other cruiseline changed their policy so that I could not have coffee delivered to my cabin or drink it on my balcony, this is what I would do.

Upon waking up in the morning, I would put my big-girl pants on and saunter where I could find some coffee on the ship and enjoy it in one of the many designated areas of the ship. And, yes, I would still enjoy my balcony.

It is amusing how suddenly everyone is a considerate smoker .

About the same as all the people with DEATHLY allergies who ALWAYS have chain smokers on BOTH sides of their balcony. The knife cuts both ways.

YAY! I'm so happy. I cannot stand smoking. It reminds me of how my grandfather just passed away from smoking all his life. :( Thank you Carnival! I really do not care if the tips are rising, just because employes just do not make enough for what they do.

Grandfather......yeah, cigarettes killed him.............

That is too bad, but once went to a relatives funeral who was 88, there were actually people blabbing about how smoking killed him! Ppfffttt......

Okay...I am a non-smoker. With asthma. VERY sensitive to cigarette smoke. BUT...I have no problem with someone smoking on their balcony. Yes, the smoke does on occasion waft over to the next balcony. But it's not that big of deal to me. I know there are certain places I choose to do business with which still allow smoking. Primarily some bars, casinos, outdoor sporting events, and, yes, cruise ships. I have FAR MORE frustration with the fact that I live in an apartment building -- a 4-plex, really -- where we are the ONLY apartment of non-smokers. Walking in to the front door of our building can be more than a bit overwhelming at times! And the smell of cigarette smoke seeping in to my apartment from the apartments around me causes me much more distress than what little smoke I might have to deal with on my balcony on a cruise ship!

Thank you for your honesty! Sorry that your apt bldg is the smoke pit.

As has been said already, there aren't enough smokers to occupy one side of the ship and the non-smokers wouldn't book that side. Carnival can't afford that many cabins to go empty.

They won't go empty!

You may be right but tell that to Royal Caribbean who went smoke free balconies and whose sister company Celebrity has completely smoke free interiors including the casino. Their stock is up close to 50 percent. We were on Celebrity Summit last month and the casino was packed every night.

Carnival cruisers are NOT the same clientele that cruise Celebrity and many would not sail RCI either. Carnival is THE bottom feeder. More smokers in their demographic for sure!

LOL! And I hope they pay for the FTTF = $300 in Carnival's pocket and they didn't have to do anything but charge you. They're hoping they can charge you! Cha ching! I will be on the phone to security and no warning either. I'll be on the balcony gloating and LMAO! :D

That is assuming the onboard security teams are responsive to the call. If it takes security an extended period of time to arrive to the room, what good is having this rule in the first place? On some occasions, it is expected for them to take longer to arrive than for something with physical interaction between either guests or crew. However, a fast response time can equate to an extra $250 for Carnival.

I wonder how many other cruisers outside of those on Cruise Critic would even bother to call security to report such an occurrence?

I love the "they can't fill half the cabins with smokers" claim.

Carnival Freedom 39% balcony cabins. half is 19.5%, remove spa cabins 18% give or take.

Smokers, approx 18-20% of the population.

I know what you will say here... Not all smokers will get a balcony.

True, add in the groups where at least one person smokes, but not all, and add in the people who don't care, and you have the ability to fill the cabins.

Even with that, it doesn't matter, carnival listened to their customer, and banned it. deal with it, book elsewhere, or just find a new place to move on.

So is this the reason somebody sold a lot of Carnival stock several weeks ago, you know it will have a cost

No coincidence........

I Just posted a suggestion on another page on maybe a compromise ... Change the 8S balconies to smoking...

They are on top of the ship/ limited number of cabins port and starboard/ and higher priced.

Right now they are marketed as non smoking balconies for those who didn't want to chance being next to a smoker on the regular balconies..... Now that the all balconies are smoke free... Switch those upper cabins...

Easy to do... The S now goes from spa to smoking

Fair to me as a non smoker

No way would they ever make SPA staterooms Smoking...LOL......

Good !

I was just getting ready to book a Carnival cruise, but now I have to jump ship because of the smoking rule. Why can't cruise ships make one side of the ship balcony smoking and the other non smoking.
Funny that prior to this ban when I suggested this compromise many of the smokers here mocked this idea.

Wow 540 post already on something that will not even be a blip on Carnivals radar when the "smoke" clears in a few days. No different than the last time they made changes.

You're right, but now we'll have to listen to bitching ad nauseam about how smokey the casino has gotten.

I think the smokers pay enough, you MUST be joking!

The next thing all the non-smoking do gooders will be whining about, when smokers all quit, is how much their taxes are!

Smokers pay a ABSOLUTELY HUGE amount of tax for all you non-smoker vipers!

Having 1 side smoking and one non-smoking is the BEST SOLUTION.

However, it makes sense and that's missing in most instances these days.

Carnival will lose business if they go non-smoking....no doubt about it.

The puny spots they have for smoking now are a complete joke.

Open wide NCL and HAL.

Ummmm, and I don't smoke cigs anymore so that argument is invalid.

Never smelled anything on our balconies besides weed once or twice.

I AGREE with those wondering about the exaggerated reports of balcony smoke everywhere choking them and round the clock smokers.

Have not had that at all in 4 cruises.

Our cabin or our friends cabins. Hmmmmmmm.........

Raise gratuity? Not much. Who cares. But, there seem to be a lot of people complaining about the food & shows & music being cheapened.

So yeah, sure, raise the costs after cheapening the experience.

Corporate greed anyone?

You do realize that the VAST MAJORITY of those taxes are necessary due to the ridiculous amount of extra costs smokers create in regards to healthcare? It's not like all those taxes are just a surplus to the economy.

You also realize that as tax revenue from cigarettes and gasoline continue to fall, services are being slashed at every level of government. It's a two edged sword.

That is exactly what they will complain about next. I for one plan on sitting in the casino and smoking. If someone comes next to me and fake hacks or waves hand around, I will blow more smoke. I have always been a considerate smoker, but now if I am in a smoking section I will smoke and not feel bad about it. If anyone has a problem with that they can go sit on their balcony and enjoy the fresh sea air. Can't wait to see what their next gripe after smoking will be.

 I am a non-smoker, I spend a lot of time in the casino! Most of the time I sit next to smokers they ask if it's ok to smoke!! I always say no problem! But now I don't blame those who just light up and puff away!!
