Never happen. They'll upgrade the ventilation and install an ionization system before they do that. It'll be full of smokers and still smell like a fresh summer rain.

Celebrity has had some excellent deals as well recently. I will be giving them a serious look see

As a non-smoker, I would not go into a designated smoking area and complain, verbally or otherwise. I would respect the space and the people who want to enjoy themselves there.

 

That being said, I sense that a lot of smokers seem to be in denial about how cigarette smoke can legitimately impact some people. I've seen multiple posts that just write it off as "fake coughing." That's not always the case.

 

Let's try not to lump all non-smokers into the same "overly dramatic" category. I don't label all smokers as inconsiderate, because that's not true. Both sides seem to be falling back on stereotypes because it's easier to disregard a caricature. Remember that people on both sides of the debate have legitimate concerns and everybody try to respond in a constructive way.

I've been chuckling at all the empty threats of "re-thinking our cruise" or "switching to another cruise line". The very tiny percentage of people who actually do that will not be missed by Carnival. It will be close to zero in reality.

 

I went through the thread pretty fast, did anyone say they were going to re-think smoking? You have until October to quit. Unless you think it is beneficial to your health, then by all means switch lines or cancel.

Wow 540 post already on something that will not even be a blip on Carnivals radar when the "smoke" clears in a few days. No different than the last time they made changes.

You do realize that the VAST MAJORITY of those taxes are necessary due to the ridiculous amount of extra costs smokers create in regards to healthcare? It's not like all those taxes are just a surplus to the economy.

 

A questionable assertion, at best. In fact, several studies have shown an increase in government spending would follow if a large percentage of smokers would quit.

That is exactly what they will complain about next. I for one plan on sitting in the casino and smoking. If someone comes next to me and fake hacks or waves hand around, I will blow more smoke. I have always been a considerate smoker, but now if I am in a smoking section I will smoke and not feel bad about it. If anyone has a problem with that they can go sit on their balcony and enjoy the fresh sea air. Can't wait to see what their next gripe after smoking will be.

Maryland Live! Casino is smoke-free. It has ONE designated smoking area outdoors. I would drink and gamble until i was silly if the casino on Carnival was smoke-free, I am sure many would agree.

I don't think that anyone is realistically asserting that a non-smoking casino won't be patronized. However, as a counterpoint to your statistics, consider that Missouri's (smoking permitted) casinos generated approximately $1.74 billion in casino revenue for the FYE 6/30/13. Perhaps it's been addressed, ( haven't read through entire thread), but is the $250 fee it??, i.e. if you're willing to pay the cleaning surcharge will Carnival allow you to carry-on with your balcony smoking??...That's actually not that much as long as you're not going to be harassed by Carnival employees or others.

I have to respectfully remind you mate that the $250 is charged once it has been determined someone has smoked in a non-smoking area. Guests are given a warning . Per the cruise ticket contract if they repeat the offense they can be disembarked.

You are completely right. One by one the cruise lines have enacted stricter smoking rules - and they don't get relaxed once enacted. People scream and rant, and then it settles down to be the norm - like on every other cruise line.

 

Before you know it, it will be on all cruise lines. And everyone will then be able to go out on their balconies, and take a deep breath and smell the ocean - not cigarette smoke.

 

And I don't begrudge the increase in gratuities. They will be on par with most cruise lines.

I've only ever sailed on Carnival or Celebrity - and I have loved them both for very different reasons. Carnival is cheaper and a bit more lively - fun. Celebrity is more expensive and is upscale and romantic - it is also very friendly to non-smokers. Celebrity has NO indoor smoking and let me tell you their smoke free casino is not empty.

 

After my last cruise on Carnival I came back - wrote a review and said it was my last Carnival cruise because of the smoking - the smokers here were all "don't let the door hit you in the butt" but I knew sooner or later this day would come and the casino will be next. I don't hate smokers but they need to realize that their world is changing and getting smaller every day.

 

The smokers can vote and poll, whine and cry, and cancel cruises but the balcony smoking is over, never to return. For those saying they'll just pay the $250 fine - yes you'll pay it but it is for EACH violation and I believe that if they have to confront you more than a couple of times - I believe they will put you off the ship. Smoking on any ship is a safety concern and as such will eventually be banned altogether.

 

On Celebrity if you report a balcony smoker - security arrives very promptly and they have a little "chat" with your neighbors. I've only had to report someone once.

I'm all with you, Jane, and smokers should realize that while they are welcome, their habit is not. Where I disagree with you, though, is that it is a safety concern. I know a lot of people seem concerned about that. But Carnival has had a lot of really disturbing fires over the past few years. None of them seem to be caused by smokers flinging cigarette butts over the sides of their balconies, or ashes immolating non-smoking neighbors on their balconies, above, forward, aft or on the lanai below.

My guess is that Carnival has for the last year monitored Royal Caribbean's no smoking balcony policy. If there has been no long-term significant impact, then you can bet that Carnival will follow. And then NCL.

They don't even have to go that far. Under their same umbrella is Princess with non smoking balconies.

This makes the decision for our next cruise a little easier. We were debating between NCL out of New York or the Pride out of Baltimore after its upgrades. Looks like we will be sticking with Carnival!

Took the Paradise out of Miami I think in 2003. Didn't notice much difference because it was non smoking. Had plenty of inked and body pierced people on the ship. They did kick a few folks off for smoking.

And fire on ships at sea can be deadly. I don't smoke. Have many friends that do. But, I do not like walking out on my balcony, and seeing cigarette butts on it. This is a fire hazard. Remember the Princess ship? don't know what started the fire. and also the Ecstacy fire... remember the pics of those ships??
