gypsy lady Posted July 13, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 13, 2014 I looking for a few suggestions for hotels in Hong Kong close to the new cruise terminal Kai Tak. Not sure where to stay pre cruise. Thanks Gypsy Lady
TMLAalum Posted July 13, 2014 #2 Share Posted July 13, 2014 The Kai Tak cruise terminal is far from the heart of Hong Kong, i.e. @100 HKD taxi ride from seaside Kowloon. The HK metro may have a line that would be near any hotel in this area, but from what I recall of our taxi ride, this area of Hong Kong is not too nice. I'd suggest the Salisbury YMCA hotel where we stayed in a "deluxe" room with a view of the harbor. The price was @228 USD per night, which is low for this location, and the room was not large, but the view was fantastic.
Rare mking8288 Posted July 13, 2014 #3 Share Posted July 13, 2014 (edited) # of nights needed pre-cruise or post-cruise for your travel in HKG, and budget. Public transport is very reliable, efficient, safe and visitor-friendly in HKG and same for metered taxi (fares are based on distance per taxi, that fit 4 (3 with 1 checked luggage each + hand carried) $100 HKD is about $12.95 USD (use a conversion factor of 12.725 = 1) Typical hotel room in HK are small, compact but very efficient and modern, prices varied (micro-sized, similar to average cruise ship cabins) but will be higher around various holidays AND especially during with cruise ship(s) at the 2 terminals. Example, in early November - your typical 3 stars, tourist class hotel room, double occupancy will run about $140 to $200 USD per night (including 10% service charge/fee - no other fees/surcharges, except for tipping houskeeping) There are int'l recognized hotel chains including Holiday Inn/Express, Ramadas, Sheratons, Marriott and of course, Asia brands & boutique hotels that are valued & traveler's oriented. Top end 5 stars with breathtaking full harbour view easily run $500 to $1,000 per night and you get a complimentary limo ride to/from airport in a Rolls Royce or equivalent, depending on the package. On the budget end, there are inexpensive hostel and private rentals, some are nice & run by expats living there - as always, what's your budget & expectations, and requirements & preference. Tripadvisor is definitely the place to start & do some filtering before zooming in for options and pricing it out. There is an inexpensive Green PMB (Public Mini Bus w 16 pax seats) that connect to/from nearby MTR Metro subway train station, but aren't designed for travelers with luggage - its' good for day trips on self excurison tour. http://www.td.gov.hk/en/transport_in_hong_kong/public_transport/minibuses/green/gmb_online_guide/kowloon_gmb_routes/kln_86/index.html Coming off the cruise ships to reach the hotel, lines for taxi can be LONG - getting a taxi to the terminal is easy from anywhere in HKG. Thanks Gypsy Lady There is no need to stay close to Kai Tak. You are better off near the Star Ferry. The Salisbury is a good choice. Taxis to the terminal are cheap and plentiful.
