Hope the NonSmokers are happy-Price Jumps on every cruise

Recommended Posts

I just went "fishing" and every sailing on every ship has had a price jump in the last 2 days on (which is when we all found out about the new policy) on each & every category so to all the people that "can now book a balcony" welcome to the new pricing. Hope your all happy :)

What have NCL USA price rises got to do with smoking??? Prices on NCL.UK have NOT risen

It can also be attributed to certain promos expiring as well among other things and yes even smoking regs but the smoking ban will actually bring in more cruisers not less based on the statistics that non smokers are in the vast majority however those non smokers may be unwilling to be charged higher prices on a cruise for this rite.

Initially prices may rise due to non smoking regs but will even out or drop eventually. At which point and if you are before final payment a price reduction is in order

A good variance analyst looks at all causes/ results and the changes over a 72 hour period should be looked at cautiously and not with glee as that spike in prices may be nothing more than a knee jerk reaction.

Now if next winters cruises are significantly higher priced AND there is a significant rise in demand then smoking regs may be the root of this variance.

I am not saying they won't get more nonsmokers onboard, I am saying "Welcome to the higher prices that smokers have always had to pay since we always book balconies".

Pretty sure it's just because of the "kids sail free" promo.

NO, because they are 3 weeks into the promo with no change to pricing until this Monday, Also the new pricing goes out to every cruise into the end of the pricing you can book at this point and not until May (which is when the KSF promo ends)

Prices go up and down several times a month, in response to more than just sales. I use cruise price tracking sites that give me access to historical pricing data and see this all the time.

Even if NCL had to hire 20 new security guards (an over the top amount) per ship for "enforcement" (which they won't) the labor costs of that are minimal.

I realize that you won't agree, but NCL knows what they are doing here. As did Royal, as did Carnival. Smoking is declining (US at least, about 22% at this point), and more revenue can be made by getting behind nonsmokers. Given that NCL/Royal/Carnival have reams of data on where their revenues come from I'm pretty sure they knew the exact cost of these rule changes (or benefit anyway, as there had to be one).

It isn't like smoking is banned, just additional restrictions. I don't expect a ban any time soon (if because of the crew above all else), nor do I think it is necessary.

People like to think these execs get up one morning and make these changes; they don't. They have reams of data on their previous sailings, and it guides their decisions. NCL went a step further with the casino changes, and I can assure you that they wouldn't have done that without understanding the impact. There are plenty of nonsmokers who might choose to return to the casino now if there will be nonsmoking areas that actually "work".

Just checked a few "post-change" prices, yeah I'm seeing increases BUT the prices in every example I checked weren't higher than they have been previously. In half of the ones I checked the prices simply returned to the price they were before the most recent price drop occurred. Anyone can see this themselves at the price tracking site (Google "cruise price track" to find it; don't want to give the link out).

If this type of logic plays out, we should be seeing lots of available cabins when all the smokers cancel out in the next few weeks when they discover the no smoking announcement. I think we will see no difference very soon.

That is not correct.....the prices on NCL UK site for Summer 2015 have risen in the past 2 days by over £200 for a 7 day cruise !!

Welcome to Cruise Critic. Interesting that your first post is NOT factually correct. I don't know which particular cruises you looked at, but all the prices concerning the cruises that I checked on for the Mediterranean and the Greek Isles have not changed

Well it sounded like you were specifically saying prices have risen due to smoking regs. Hmmm read your post again to see if it sounds that way

For me it doesn't matter I am at the point where I book the cheapest if the cheap on a ship. Even when I cruise princess I prefer to spend it on extras like excursions and restaurants.

Not true. I booked ksf the first day t opened. Prices went up/down I believe 3x already. I cashed in once and feel I might be at Rock bottom but I do keep a close watch anyway

Btw. Did they change the end date for ksf? I thought it was until early August.

That's a pretty hilarious case if "if/then" extrapolation! But I will say this: as a "vacation smoker" -- I allow myself to smoke for one week of the year, while on my cruise -- I'm kinda happy about the policy change. Despite having spent 30 years as a regular smoker, I almost never did so in situations where it might bother others. On my Breakaway cruise in March, the folks on the balcony next to me smoked a lot. I like to leave the door open at night, but couldn't because of this. And again... I'm a vacation smoker. I spent that whole week smoking.

HOnestly, the whole smoking debate is one I'm torn on. I thought on it extensively when I was writing a book about manners and civility in the modern world. There was a chapter on smoking in which I basically said I've been a smoker, a non-smoker, a smoking non-smoker and a non-smoking smoker at various points in my life... so I kinda see everyone's perspective. I get that as a smoker, it's not unfair to expect that non-smokers realize the areas in which they can smoke are constantly shrinking. So when smokers are smoking in one of the areas they're allowed to, let them. Dont give them the skank eye. I ALSO get that non-smokers have the right not to breath in the toxic smoke, and that smokers shouldn't necessarily have the right to "ruin" someone else's happy space. LOL

As you can see, that particular chapter made me somewhat schitzophrenic!

Although my cruise is the one time of the year I now allow myself to smoke, I can't even imagine canceling a trip... even if they turned the whole boat into a non-smoking zone! But I know some will...

Mine did and they are ksf 12 day cruises. Just sayin that maybe you should have specifically stated in your cruises and said all ksf cruises

Details matter when claiming to state facts

Thank you for the welcome although I do feel a bit of a fraud. I was previously a member but forgot my user name so as I was going to use a new cruise line I thought I'd start a new account.

It appears as if both of us were factually not correct. I was looking at the Western Mediterranean cruises, I can now see that the Venice departures have not increased.

Is the airfare reasonable?

$84 pp more than flying into IAH for canceled CCL Triumph sailing but no rental car/transfer costs. To answer your question though, neither flight was reasonable. From SDF reasonable airfare is an oxymoron.

Looking forward to the anger over this dissipating so we can avoid posts such as the Op's.

I have been looking at a specific cruise for a couple months now and the price has remained unchanged. If there are fluctuations in prices and if prices ARE going up, that just means NCL is selling cabins.

NOTHING and I mean NOTHING about the cost of anything is driven by anything other than supply/demand. So if indeed fares are going up, it makes more sense to say that NCL cruisers are booking cabins because they are happy with NCL....for whatever reason. If prices drop, it means cabins are not selling.

This is basic common sense and I have seen such a lack of common sense in regard to the smoking issues that I have been just sitting here smh.

And you don't see the correlation between higher prices & future cancallations?

Gee what would I know I am only the Comptroller of a multi-state company.

As a financial analyst/ comptroller myself yes there is a correlation and therefore prices will not rise exceedingly to the point where cruisers will not book

Immie you specifically said higher price/cancellation and you did NOT say smoking regs/ higher prices/ cancellations as a correlation

I worked with someone back in the day who would always leave out pertinent data and we all had to pay the overtime hours price for his mistakes

If I were doing this because if the smoking regs $84 is a small price to pay IMHO

I'm not a comptroller, but I sell things for a living, and understanding the value proposition to cost ratio is part of my day-to-day life.

If what you say is fact, then it's intriguing that the prices went UP (balconies now expected to be more in demand), rather than down (no smokers going to book balconies / they'll all cancel).

It suggests that the property (balconies) now have added value, since they will be smoke-free. Of course both smokers and non-smokers alike are still welcome to book them, so it's not a repercussion aimed solely at non-smokers.

I'd also like to add that if sales are increasing because of the smoking restrictions causing less 'supply', it doesn't bother me.

Being able to book my balcony and not have to pray that we wind up between smokers is kinda priceless to us. So OP, if you were trying to get non-smokers upset with this little tidbit of news (that may or may not be accurate), I think you've failed.
