Maasdam Hints Needed

2006 was last time on the Maasdam and we are wondering if we can/should look for many changes. We are going the second week in Dec. so are hoping she will be decorated for the holidays as was done in the past. I remember her as being "cozy" compared with the larger ships and am looking forward to that atmosphere. Will I be disappointed? :rolleyes:

Since 2006, the Casino Bar and Piano Bar were taken out. Now there is the MIX -- comprised of 3 bars blending into each other. The sports bar has one small TV and 6 tables with various games (free) like checkers, looking at pictures, etc. -- only 3 were working on her when we were on her in 2012. Then there is the Martini Bar and next to it is the Champagne Bar with the piano close to it. No walls separating them. A guitarist plays from around 5 to 9 in the sports bar area and then the piano man starts at 9.

Depends on when in 2006 ;)

Maasdam paid a visit to the Grand Bahama Shipyard at Freeport, the Bahamas, emerging on 26 April 2006 from a three-week makeover that incorporated the major Signature Of Excellence part 1 enhancements. For Maasdam, this refit meant the disappearance of her Java Café, Leyden Library, Puzzle Corner, Card Room and Kristal Terrace. Physically, SOE #1 incorporated the Culinary Arts Center (inside her Wajang Theater), an Explorations Café “powered by the New York Times”, a refurbished Crow’s Nest and an expanded Greenhouse Spa and Salon.

During another scheduled dry-dock at the Grand Bahama shipyard from 2 through 16 January 2009, Maasdam gained “Merabella”, a luxury jewelry boutique located on Upper Promenade Deck mid-ships, in between the Explorers Lounge and her then Piano Bar. It was created by gutting the extreme forward portion of the Explorers Lounge.

On 30 January 2009, Maasdam gained the Digital Workshop program by Microsoft located in the former Queen’s (dining) Room.

During a 14-day southern Caribbean cruise on 30 April 2010, the finishing touches were made to Maasdam’s second alternative restaurant, “Canaletto”, a complimentary casual-style Italian restaurant for dinner.

Maasdam once again entered dry-dock in Freeport, the Bahamas from 4 through 24 April 2011 for the first phase of her SOE part 2 enhancements. During that dry-dock, the Ocean Bar was upgraded; “Mix”, a multi-themed new bar concept featuring three separate areas where either Champagne, Martinis and/or Spirits & Ales for microbrews, single malts, etc. are served. In order to accomplish this, Maasdam’s original Piano and Casino Bars were gutted and the entertainment area on Upper Promenade deck was opened up (walls were knocked down) to create a better flow between shops, bars and the casino;

The “Showroom at Sea" concept was added; Maasdam’s Rembrandt main show lounge was transformed into the Showroom at Sea with more of a nightclub ambiance;

Thirty-eight new Lanai staterooms were created on Lower Promenade deck whose large sliding glass doors provide direct access to the outside deck's walk-around teak promenade;

Sixteen staterooms (fourteen outside and two inside) on Verandah Deck were created two decks below the nearby Greenhouse Spa, Known as “Spa staterooms”

Christmas decorations usually go in during the first and second week of December

Thank you for the details, Copper. I just looked back at our Mariner summery and realized it was Jan. '05 when we travel on her, so indeed there have been many changes. She will appear to be a new ship to us! We shall enjoy I am sure!

Another couple of questions...any idea who will be in the piano bar entertaining? Thanks, KK, for the description of the 3 bar areas. Has the movie venue been enlarged? As I remember it was quite small and required a good 30 to 45 min. early arrival to obtain a seat. It didn't bother me (I just took a book) but there were lots of upset people on occasions

Movies are still shown in the Wajang Theatre, which (imo) is a decent size, considering the size of the ship. It's much larger than the movie theatres on the Vista ships, for example.

Unless it's a very popular movie, or a lousy day outside, it will hold a good crowd.

Though there has been some changes you will still have that cozy felling on board the Maasdam. Even though the central bar area is more modern now, to me it does not take away from the ship to much.
