Room Service Delivery

I've often thought of ordering room service while enjoying balcony time but wonder how it actually works. Must you stay in the room waiting? Or would they let themselves into the room if you didn't hear the door?

I am thinking of leaving the tip out on a table with a note. Just wondering how that might work?

You will need to answer the door...but if you can leave your balcony door cracked about 30-45 mins. after you order, you should be able to hear them knock! They will NOT come into the room uninvited, so you HAVE to answer the door. Lordy...the cabin isn't THAT big, that you won't hear it, if you're listening for it!

You definitely have to be in the room in order to let them in. If it is breakfast then, you can mark the preferred delivery time on the order form that you hang on your door, and I find that they are quite good at delivering very close to the time you specify. If not breakfast, then, when you place your order, they should be able to give you an estimate on how long it will take to come. But you have to let them in.

Thank you for the answers.

I will try to prop the door open and listen. Glad to hear they let you know a time frame. I envisioned it being hard to hear out on a balcony and them banging on the door while others cabins tried to sleep. I like to see the ship pull into ports and look forward to trying room service while I watch.

If you don't come to the door they will call you on the phone. But, can't hear that out there either. :)

I have actually been in my cabin and didn't hear them knock and got the phone call. They called and said is no one in the room we are at the door with food..

So yes, I would have an idea of what time they are coming and wait in the cabin for it because you can't always hear them knock. But the good thing is you should hear the phone ring from the balcony if nothing else...

Don't knock the OP, this actually IS an issue! Not a huge one, but.... I wake up every morning sickeningly early. It's a curse. I set out the room service breakfast order (critical: coffee) the night before, wake up, and.... Wait. I can't go out to the balcony because I won't hear the knock. Obviously I want to be on the balcony, not staring at the ceiling in the semi dark. And I sure don't want to wake anyone up.

Oh well, it's nice to focus on problems like this! :p

Because they want room service.

I would rather have room service than the Lido cattle drive. We have been on two cruises..and 5 day and a 7 day. I have eaten exactly 3 meals in the lido. Just don't care for it all that much.

I order room service EVERY morning ( and sometimes afternoon) on a cruise (not into the buffet thing unless forced). 2 adults, 2 kids. You specify the time window so I stay inside for that time frame and sometimes intercept them in the hall. Then maybe I can get some coffee/me time on the balcony before everyone wakes up.

And I keep an accessible stack of one dollar bills in close proximity for a quick transaction.

I read that cruisers have taken a wireless doorbell so they can hear it on the balcony.

I read of that happening. Good idea for the balcony sitters waiting for friends or room service...:)

There is nothing wrong with a made to order omelet:). Breakfast through room service is kind of meh, cold cereal, fruit, danish. When the Lido first opens there are few cattle and everything is still fresh (and they do have made to order omelets and eggs to order).

On our last cruise, SIL hurt her back so DB and her weren't going to dinner. They ordered from room service and were told that it would be delivered in fifteen minutes. They showed up earlier than what they had said. We were all out on our balconies when they came to deliver it. We didn't hear them knocking on the door. After fifteen minutes, DB called to ask about it. They told him that they tried to deliver but nobody answered the door so they took it back. He had to re-order. They did not call to tell them they were at the door. That time they waited in their cabin. They don't always call if you don't answer the door.

And this is a potential dilemma? Really?

Clearly it is, if the OP took the time to post it. And judging by the number of views/responses, clearly others are interested as well. I didn't know what the protocol for this was either so I found it interesting to know. No need to knock others, just don't post at all.

I have seen the issue of room entry addressed but not the thing about the money.

Even if they were able to enter your room, they can only accept tips (cash or otherwise) if you physically place it in there hands.

Just thought I's mention that also.

Good point, they are not just going to take money off a table.
