Anchorage Airport car return and transfer question!

Thinking about doing our own pre-cruise adventure with an airport rental car. Is it possible to return the rental car, to the airport, then pickup transfer from cruise line to port or better to book train on our own? This would require dropping car at airport and then cab or public transportation to train depot which I understand is really early in the morning. We would need to get to Whittier for cruise.

Do compare airport rental car prices with off-site rental prices.

We saved hundreds of dollars by renting a car for a week from a location in downtown Anchorage, well worth it for the price of a short taxi ride to get there from the airport.

They even let us drop off the car at the airport when we were done with it at no additional charge.

It seems it would be easiest just to drop off your passengers and all the luggage at the train depot on the last morning before returning the rental car, and then take a taxi back to the train depot.

Maybe the rental car company's shuttle might even drop you off there if you ask.

The Whittier train leaves around 10am , so not what I would consider "early". Ideal would be to turn in the car the night prior as already suggested. The downtown offices are not open as late as the airport.

There is no "benefit" to using a cruise line transfer. You can easily book your own transfer for savings. You may want to consider having touring plans included in this day, since the ships don't leave until late. A one way rental car, offers you the most and especially worthwhile for a first time, infrequent visitor. There is so much to see and do. Don't be in a rush to get on the ship.
