Calliope Posted August 22, 2014 #51 Share Posted August 22, 2014 This may be of help. This video is probably the best how to that I've seen on tying a bowtie. I would go so far as to say that it's brilliant! If a gent can't follow this and end up with a wonderfully tied tie, it's really quite sad. pmb1 Posted August 22, 2014 #52 Share Posted August 22, 2014 ... Years ago I ditched the mirror and found it far easier without).Yes! I didn't realize until a year ago that I didn't need to look in the mirror to tie my tie. Now I turn away from the mirror and think "shoe lace" to tie my bow tie. Tying the knot takes 15 seconds, tops. Straightening and evening the knot can take minutes more sometimes, but it's all worth it considering how spiffing the end result looks and how superior I feel to the pre-tied rabble. Underwatr Posted August 22, 2014 #54 Share Posted August 22, 2014 Any man who can tie a shoe-lace can tie a bow-tie. The knot/process is the same :) . It is rarely important that the two ears of my shoelace knot are completely symmetrical and the same length as the free ends, though. :p

Post Captain Posted August 23, 2014 #57 Share Posted August 23, 2014 The Windsor knot is commonly attributed to the Duke of Windsor, although apparently there is some evidence that it was invented by his father, George V. Nonetheless... the Duke and his lovely bride were quite the fashionplates, and set a number of trends on their frequent transatlantic voyages. Here are some sterling examples of the Duke's fashion sense. Let these pictures be your guide, and you'll never go wrong in selecting the right wardrobe for any occasion on board or ashore: Why not wear white tie and tails on formal night?: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d5/The_Duke_of_Windsor_%281970%29.jpg Don't forget to visit Fido at the ship's kennels: http://lukehoney.*******.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/01/23/dukeofwindsor.jpg Always be prepared to fill in for the captain: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ddCG87bFBBk/ThwwHJnX3uI/AAAAAAAAAEs/VWX4vnASUsM/s1600/DUKE-OF-WINDSOR4.jpg A pocket handkerchief and a hand in one pocket will instantly let everyone the you're a true gentleman: http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/originals/c2/d2/b4/c2d2b435689a933a084e0d26e07e6777.jpg A broad-brimmed hat and a pipe are the perfect accessories and add a touch of class: http://24.media.tumblr.com/a2cde54fa5ea3968e1c4b5ad106c8fa9/tumblr_mlnrp7i9sX1qfjc32o4_400.jpg Have you signed up for a golf lesson?: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ilZnkjoaWvs/UK31GjZbCmI/AAAAAAAAF6A/Tyd9XpUvruQ/s640/Duke+Of+Windsor.jpg Heads will turn whenever you enter the Queen's Grill: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Uv7SLO6o4q0/UAuGFHZtEsI/AAAAAAAACo8/3aFDaveM2y0/s1600/DukeOfWindsor2.jpg Visiting the ship's library? Salacia Posted August 23, 2014 #58 Share Posted August 23, 2014 But I haven't graduated to Velcro shoes yet. :D My experience is that sandals with a Velcro fastener was good during an extended trip in Southern Italy where walking was the main form of transportation. I appreciated that the sandals straps were adjustable, since my feet were a very different size early in the morning, but after a few hours of walking in BRIGHT sunlight and heat, my not so delicate foot size expanded. (Note, I'm not talking about fancy women's sandals encrusted with jewels - but rather sandals made for walking. But walking around some ancient sites such as Pompeii, sandals won't do. BTW, one of my nephews had difficulty with fastening his footwear after having serious problems with a compound fracture of his ankle. He found that adjustable fasteners worked well for him. Clearly, some things are not age specific. Young or not so young, we find a way to keep moving :)

Salacia Posted August 23, 2014 #60 Share Posted August 23, 2014 (edited) I wonder what the Pompeians wore? :D My guess is that pre 78 AD, they wore sandals, unless they could afford shoes. But in August 79, it didn't matter: shoes, sandals, feet, bodies, were fused in place. Edited August 23, 2014 by Salacia

balf Posted August 28, 2014 #66 Share Posted August 28, 2014 Perhaps "How to Tie a Bow Tie" is an enrichment class that Cunard could add; it would be more useful to most men than "How to Fold a Napkin". On QE2 they used to have scarf tying classes led by a charming lady, Elaine if my memory is correct. They were a load of fun. David.
