Wrigley80's Carnival Pride Photo Review with my Dad.....and my Mom too

So how about a bit of information about those two military ships in the Harbor?

Those are part of the National Defense Reserve Fleet. They are positioned in many of the big harbors to allow quick deployment of military assets.

Those two are called "roll-on-roll-off" ships. Those are probably "Cape Washington" and "Cape Wrath". Their placement near the Sugar refinery is interesting.

 

When you go on the Dream in December, about 15 minutes down the river you will see the sisters of those ships named "Cape Kennedy" and "Cape Knox". They are also docked near the Domino Sugar refinery in the neighborhood of Arabi in New Orleans.

They are the same configuration as the ships in Baltimore, with the aft ramps deployed for loading.

 

Remember to look for those when you leave New Orleans, and also look for us coming up the river, as we'll be on the Elation disembarking the next morning in New Orleans.

 

 

Wow!!! Thank you for the insight. I will definitely be sure to look for them when we leave New Orleans. Do you know what side of the River they will be on??

 

Last December we were on the Sunshine out of New Orleans and I would have looked for the ships then but when we pulled out of port it was so foggy you couldn't even see your hands in front of your face

They are on the Eastbank, which means they'll be on the Port side. Once you see Jackson Square go by, just stay on that side. The scenery from the Port side is very nice until you get past Chalmette. Later in the evening population will disappear on the east side of the ship, but will continue for some time on the starboard side.

No way. Those will definitely be replaced during the dry dock.

Thank You. We have a Port Side balcony cabin on Lido Deck in December when we cruise on the Dream so we should see it. Thank You....I will definitely keep my eyes open for those ships.

 

I wonder why they are docked next to the Domino Sugar factories in both Baltimore and New Orleans??

We had a flat screen on our cruise on the Pride October of 2013. What I think happened is as some of the older ones "died", they replaced them with the newer ones.

Haha...that's funny. Probably start out on the top passenger deck and work their way down to Riviera Deck. The TV was no big deal to me but in this day in age it's just weird to still see a TV that size

It wouldn't make a difference to me either, the television was probably only on about an hour the whole week - I don't cruise to watch TV in my cabin! ;) So many other fun things to do!

Brianna, some of your earlier photos from the harbor were MSC ships as well. Our oldest son (now a USN Ensign) sailed on a MSC ship for four months during college.

Yeah you're so right. The only time we had the TV on in the cabin was in the morning when everyone was getting ready and in the evening when everyone was getting ready for bed

OK now back to the review. We love Sea Days so on our first full day at sea we decided that it was a nice day to relax and just enjoy the ship. It was time to explore around the Carnival Pride

 

Our first stop of the day was to the Sea Day Brunch in the Normandie Dining Room. My mom only went to breakfast with us in the dining room on 2 mornings....usually she just went to Lido

 

I loved the décor and the lighting in the Normandie Dining Room

 

 

 

 

After breakfast we headed outside onto the Promenade Deck

One thing that needs to be addressed on the Pride is the lack of chairs and benches on the Outdoor Promenade Deck...there weren't any. Not a single one. My dad and I really enjoy going out there throughout the day and night to watch the waves and the sea go by but there need to be benches.

We asked an officer about this and were told the reason why there are no benches out there is because that deck is where the Muster Drill is held. It's odd though because other ships have benches on their outdoor promenade locations.

 

The seas were angry today :mad: ;)

I always enjoy checking out these boards on the ship. This one was located in the Atrium. I enjoy checking to see how deep the water is. At one point we were in water that was 16,660 feet deep :eek:

Notice the direction and speed of the winds....one reason why the ship was rocking and rolling

 

Mom is playing the penny slots....she hit it big. She won a whole $8.75 :eek:

One thing that I have always wanted to go to but never did was the Steakhouse Demonstration....so my mom and I decided to go

 

They were making Mushroom Carapaccio....it wasn't very good

 

The pictures are very red because the Steakhouse is inside the windows of the funnel. It was VERY HOT up there

 

 

One of the chefs showed how he frosted the Special Occasion cakes....he did that in about 10 minutes

After the steakhouse demonstration I headed back to the cabin for a bit to lay down I was feeling queasy due to the movement of the ship. Now I never get sick onboard and rarely do I ever feel it. I went back to the cabin and took 2 Dramamine (I always bring it with me just in case) and I laid down for an hour or so. When I woke up I felt much better.....you could still feel the movement from the ship but it wasn't making me feel sick

 

At 2:00 pm we went to the Great Balloon Lift-Off in the Atrium. I thought they were going to drop balloons from up above but that's not what it was. Everyone received a balloon and you blew it up and then 3 people at a time would go to the center of the atrium and let go of their balloon. Who's ever balloon stayed in the air the longest moved on to the next round. It was a fun game

My mom won. Her balloon lasted the longest....she won a Carnival medal. My dad has always said that had a lot of hot air....haha

 

The game didn't last long but it was fun while it lasted

Now I had booked this cruise only 3 weeks in advance of our sail date but I was pleased to see that we had an active roll call here on cruise critic. I joined right in on the conversation. That is half the fun of cruising is meeting new people. We arranged to have an cash bar meet and greet. One member of our roll call contacted John Heald and he contacted the ship to make sure that we would have a lounge available. We had our meet and greet on Monday, July 28th (our first sea day) at 3:00 pm in the Butterflies Lounge. This was a good location for it

 

 

This is the Butterflies Lounge. It is on Deck 1 FWD....this is where the Punchliner Comedy Club is held

 

My fellow cruisers

 

Me and Josh (he is the cruise director). And upon talking with him I learned that he is from Schaumburg, IL which is only about 45 minutes from where I am from. And his favorite MLB team is the Chicago Cubs....and it's my favorite team too. He was AWESOME....he is now my favorite cruise director. He was very personable and always willing to talk to fellow passengers. He came to our meet and greet with the Assistant Cruise Director. They brought a few prizes from Carnival.....bottles of champagne, ships on a stick, photo coupons to use in the photo gallery.

 

We also had a gift exchange at our meet and greet where anyone who wanted to participate brought a gift from their hometown or home state. This was a fun activity and it really allowed everyone to find out where everybody is from

 

I received Chesapeake Bay, Maryland coasters and a Maryland Salt and Pepper shaker

Remember when I said that the seas were very rough today.....well here is the proof

 

Now we have been on 16 cruises and I have NEVER seen barf bags by the elevators. They were by all the elevators on this night

After Formal dinner I headed back to the cabin to get my clothes changed....3 hours in pants is long enough. I was ready to get my shorts back on

Once we all got our clothes change we headed back out for the show in the Taj Mahal show lounge. Tonight's show was "Music through Generations." It was basically like music from different countries.....it was bad. Now I won't get up and leave during a performance because that is rude but the show lounge was basically only a 1/4 full at the end of the performance.

 

I strolled around the ship before heading back to the cabin and when I arrived this was there waiting for me.....well it was actually for my Mom and Dad

 

It was a gift from Josh (the cruise director) for the Wedding Anniversary. That was so nice of him

 

We gave the bottle of champagne away at dinner the next night because my mom and dad don't drink. We kept the commemorative champagne glasses :p
