Cruising NE/Canada in June, is black velveteen acceptable in evening or would it be tacky, since we

are in the summer months. Here at home, I would not choose this attire for evening wear in the summer, BUT, can I get away with it cruising, and do I really care if it is not proper attire, LOL. I am solo traveling this cruise and must keep to one suitcase so packing wisely, and also not wanting to have to buy too many new clothes. Tell me honestly, can I get away with it for evening attire in what is considered the summer months? Thanks for your help.

Hi.
I live in the Maritime provinces in Canada and I must tell you what I saw last summer...I was waiting for DH in the car across the street from a church. A wedding procession came out...all the men in black tuxes and all the female attendants in beautiful black gowns. The effect was stunning.
Point is..a stylish black dress can be worn any time. And just for the record, we sometimes have frost in June here, so the nights can be cool. You may be the only one in your party dressed comfortably for the weather!

I wear black velvet all year round. In the warm months, sleeveless. I love it.

Marie...wear your velvet..you may have some people who say its not "in style" for the summer..I disagree.....You are on a cruise ship and that is seasonless in itself!
You will look beautiful I am sure

Lois, you are such a doll! Also, let me take this opportunity to thank you for your Mercury Reviews. I have really enjoyed reading them. Also, when you shared how one passenger commented "you talk to everyone don't you"....that really encouraged me, as I think that is a wonderful attribute. I too, am very friendly and outgoing, but it was a wonderful reminder for me to be especially so, on my upcoming solo cruise.

Hi Marie..glad I could help really, a cruise ship is such an easy way to interact with people.
The bartenders are always friendly...if you want to just sit and talk..they don't care if you drink or not...you can always have a "regular coffee"...if you don't partake in the adult beverage.
The woman who made that comment to me had never cruised before...and she also kind of raised her eyes when the comment was made...too bad really.
She also said, they wouldn't have taken this cruise but it was "kind of given to them"....I didn't ask her what that meant.....but if someone wants to give me a cruise...I AM THERE NOW

The woman sounds like NO FUN AT ALL...Oh, and I very much enjoy my adult beverages, and plan on hanging out in the bar/lounges. But, it is nice to know I can have a coffee or something, as I would not have realized that. Thanks!

Hi Marie,

It's nice to see that you check out this board also. I would think that black velveteen (velvet) is acceptable at almost any time. Okay maybe not in Florida in August when the temperatures are going through the roof, but at any other time or place why not? Go for it!

As far as the "adult beverages" go - I enjoy my tipple but am not one for the bar scene. I have nothing against it, I just don't enjoy it myself. However, a couple I met on our last cruise told me that they go to the Explorers' Lounge on the HAL ships after dinner to listen to The Rosario Strings. They say that the music is really great and soothing and that HAL serves hand-dipped chocolates which they say are to die for. You don't need to order a drink at all or you can just order a cup of coffee if you want. I plan to try this out on my next (first solo) cruise. I'll be on my cruise before you embark on yours. If I get home in one piece and have time before you leave then I'll let you know all about it.

Happy cruising.

Valerie

Oh Marie,

In case I sounded like a total Prude -which I'm not, I can assure you - I may have a cognac to go along with those wonderful-sounding chocolates. I just don't "do the bar scene" any more because I'm too uncomfortable sitting by myself. You should have known me when I was oh so much younger - I was much more the life of the party then

Hi Valerie...I am not into the "bar scene" here at home...but I don't consider it the same thing on a cruise ship.
Cafe Cova on the Celebrity ships is a coffee bar..where they also sell liquor....I love sitting there to people watchand have always been comfortable on my own..been traveling solo for years.

Hi Valerie-It's always good to see you . We don't do the bar scene here at home, but we do enjoy indulging while cruising. And, I do love my coffee, so it is nice to have this option too. I think I would be better off sticking with the coffee, LOL.

Yes, I think I can get away with the velveteen on the cruise, so plan on doing so.

I bet you are getting excited about your cruise NEXT month. It's fun to have something to look forward to, and plan for.
