What happens to unused OBC?

No, it cannot be carried over to a future cruise.

In the rare event you do have unused OBC, several people have reported they can get it in cash by going to the Purser's desk the last full day of the cruise. This was not always the case in the past.

Check with the Purser's desk earlier in the cruise to see how they handle it on your voyage.

we have always been able to go to the Purser's desk and cash out. In fact one cruise (last year in May) we had $20 left and since it was from stock credit we thought it was just lost.

We went to bing off from security to get off but it went Bong instead of bing and we were told we had to go to the purser's desk where they said you have a $20 credit and gave us the cash.

But rarely do we have credit left

We received a healthy amount of OBC for our upcoming cruise from Customer Relations that was nonrefundable. We were told this would not show up on the Cruise Personalizer or our travel summary and our TA provided a screen shot from the reservation system which itemized all of our OBC with a column entitled "Refundable" and yes or no listed next to each.

When our stock OBC was processed, all 5 categories of OBC applicable to this cruise including the Customer Relations credit magically appeared in the CP and travel summary. Next to the Customer Relations category was an asterisk which noted that it wasn't refundable. The other categories (stock, excursion, FCC, TA) are all refundable and didn't have the asterisk.

You can definitely check the status with Princess or your TA before your cruise, but I would say that based upon what I've observed, you can check this on the CP yourself and unless it is noted that it isn't refundable, you should be able to ask for a refund of unused OBC at the end of the cruise.

We recently (May) came off a 25 day Ruby Princess cruise and had several hundred dollars of OBC remaining. Guest Relations told us that it would be refunded to the same credit card we used for the cruise. Several weeks later we received a check (in the mail) from Princess for the total amount. Others have reported they were able to get cash refunds...but that was not an option on our cruise.
