Blue Horizon Posted September 23, 2014 #1 Share Posted September 23, 2014 I understand that the Tortola embarkation was canceled for the NCL Jewel this coming Thanksgiving cruise due to port construction. Has anyone heard whether the port will be closed to the NCL Gem due to stop there the same week on Nov. 28???????
CruiserBruce Posted September 23, 2014 #2 Share Posted September 23, 2014 Probably the better place for your research would be the NCL board, here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=

Has anyone heard whether the port will be closed to the NCL Gem due to stop there the same week on Nov. 28??????? I believe it's Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas that has the cancelled port call. The Norwegian Jewel isn't even doing cruises that call on Tortola. Per someone on your cruise's roll call, NCL still will be calling on the port, because it's a smaller ship than the Jewel of the Seas.
jmf123 Posted September 23, 2014 #4 Share Posted September 23, 2014 It may be closed for the Gem as well, Blue Horizon. Here is info from a post on the RCI board, regarding the Tortola cancellations. Tortola, British Virgin Islands: A major port expansion at Road Town will enable the port to accommodate ships carrying 4,000-plus passengers. Both Norwegian Cruise Lines and Disney have been given berthing preference. Other ships will be able to dock there as well, however. Work is expected to start during this quarter to lengthen the existing cruise pier to 1,200 feet and extend its width to 45 feet, build an excursion/ferry dock, a visitor center, a boardwalk and four acres of shore facilities, including a shopping mall village, recreation elements and staging/transfer area. Completion is projected Early 2015 Someone on the 6/27/15 Adventure of the Seas reported that Tortola has been canceled for her cruise, and another poster stated Tortola is canceled on a Nov. 8th sailing. If St. Thomas is your substitute island, you can still likely book a shore excursion- departing from St. Thomas to Tortola. Be sure to check- I believe that a passport is needed to go to Tortola. Or consider an excursion from St. Thomas to lovely St. John.
