cb at sea Posted October 23, 2014 #2 Share Posted October 23, 2014 You will get AT LEAST what you paid for....so don't do a GTY if you don't like ALL of the cabins in the lowest category you might get. Simple!
mapsmith Posted October 23, 2014 #3 Share Posted October 23, 2014 Yeah you get what pay for at a minimum. However, on most ships, the Interiors and Balconies will have basically the same number of rooms, so the pool is rather a good one. However, the OV is usually only on Decks 1 &2. (Scenic OV usually sell out and probably have not really shown up in the GTY pools) So, there are probably fewer rooms in the OV GTY pool, which should mean that OV upgrades would be more frequent. (that is, OV to Balcony.) However, the Revenue Department controls everything. We have gotten decent interiors and decent Balconies. This year we are trying OV. But all classes have great rooms and not so great rooms. It is simply the luck of the draw.
RetesGirl3 Posted October 23, 2014 #4 Share Posted October 23, 2014 So far we have been lucky on a guaranteed cabin. Last time we had guaranteed Oceanview and was able to upgrade to a spa balcony for just $40 per person! This time we have guaranteed balcony and have our fingers crossed and are hoping for a good one!
sailor_jimc Posted October 23, 2014 #5 Share Posted October 23, 2014 strictly looking at possible BAD cabiins you can end up with I would say and ocenaview GTY is your best bet. (Except for anything Fantasy class) with a balcony or even interior GTY you can run the risk of being put on deck 6 over the casino or piano bar which are going to be noisy cabins. There are not too many OV cabins that are going to be bad. But that is why the GTY is a cheaper fare.. you are taking your chances. If you dont want the risk then pay to pick your own cabin. Carnival_Brides Posted October 23, 2014 #6 Share Posted October 23, 2014 I get what you're saying and it depends on the type of ship. There was a promotion a few weeks ago where we thought about moving into the GTY pool when we were in 4Js. Looking at the Conquest class deck plans we realized that there were too many bad places to be stuck in an interior, and the ocean view options weren't much better (under the galley anyone?), so we went with balcony GTYs. We don't care about where we are on the ship (high/low, aft/forward/etc.), so our only concern in that category was being under the gym or on top of the theater. We looked at what was available and based on the number of cabins (less than 10 in each spot) were pretty confident we didn't have to worry. We got upgraded to 8Ds on deck 8 at the midship/forward break. Works for us. We've done GTYs before we some success in the balcony category on the Pride, the Glory, and now the Freedom. With the Spirit class you have to be prepared to take a 7A (obs. view) and the Dream class I guess it'd be the Coves.
douglinc@msn.com Posted October 23, 2014 #7 Share Posted October 23, 2014 For our Jan. Magic cruise, we did an ocean veiw GTY and have been assigned an aft. oceanview. We have never had this before. We did an aft. balcony on the Conquest and really liked it. It's still early, so they could still move us around. Anyone have experiece with the aft. oceanview? How bizarre that you booked a guarantee and already assigned in Oct for a January cruise. Final payment has not even came yet? Are you sure you booked a guarantee? some aft oceanview cabins get a lot of vibration/. shuddering when entering or leaving ports- some cabins are worse then others. NOTHING at all like a balcony on the aft.
wantocruisemore Posted October 23, 2014 #9 Share Posted October 23, 2014 We did a balcony guarantee last Sept. Since just my DH and I traveling. Very pleased. Ended up in aft section on favorite deck. Would not hesitate to do again if just the two of us and not family where we need more rooms.

Like I said it's really early so there is no telling how many times it will be changed.

Elaine5715 Posted October 23, 2014 #13 Share Posted October 23, 2014 An OV GTY could put you forward where you may hear a lot of noises from the thrusters.

We got a GTY aft. oceanview on a different line once (HAL). There was a deck outside our window which no one used (we were in Alaska). The access door was right around the corner from out room. It was like a big private balcony, just for us. We got a lot of great pictures from the wake of the ship that way.

Cruiseaholichal Posted October 23, 2014 #16 Share Posted October 23, 2014 We felt a OV was the best bet-- chances are you will get a decent cabin. Not always-- but a great chance.

RetesGirl3 Posted October 24, 2014 #18 Share Posted October 24, 2014 [/size] I always worry about this type of balcony with a GTY:D Personally, I wouldn't mind having this balcony! As long as it's a balcony and I can go outside and look at the gorgeous , aqua water and the beautiful stars at night! We booked a guaranteed balcony for our next cruise!
