Arizona Memorial Excurison

I also posted this in the Hawaii thread but also wanted help from the Celebrity thread regulars.

My wife and I will be Celebrity Solstice Sept 22, 2015 10 day to Hawaii plus 3 days afterwards in Honolulu. The ships excursions do not guarantee tickets to Arizona Memorial. I would prefer to order them through NPS, but they want a time for the shuttle ride to the memorial. I know it is about 30-45 min ride to the park. Or would I be better off taking a taxi or the bus from the pier or schedule it from our hotel after the cruise?

Thanks

We went to Honolulu 3 days before our cruise last year and went to Pearl Harbor before the cruise. Bought tickets on-line and then when we got to Honolulu picked up a Things To Do magazine that had lots of adds for transportation to Pearl Harbor. Can't recall how much we paid-not a whole lot- picked up at hotel, dropped off outside entrance, picked up again at the agreed time. All very easy and less expensive than a shore excursion.

From the pier walk out to Kalakula (sp) Ave--cross this street & take

THE BUS (the name of the line is the bus ( no #/ letters) towards

The Azizona Memorial ( confirm with driver). Reverse to pier.

From Waikiki hotels follow above.

Do it as noted after the cruise.

We booked the tour last year and the guide was not good. Other than transportation to PH and the tickets, we were on or own while there anyway most of the time (interesting museum to see). I think they do not guarantee the tickets to cover themselves just in case. Otherwise, the tour just included a drive-by of the sites mentioned like Punchbowl and Waikiki.

We bought tickets online and did this on our own.

Off topic, but since you are spending some time after your cruise, a doors off helicopter ride is a fantastic way to see Honolulu.

If you are up for it I highly recommend Genesis Aviation. I have fantastic pictures that I took from the helicopter.

We did it on our own. Shared a taxi with two others. Bought our tickets when we got there. Had a little time to wait before we went out to the Memorial but there is lots to see before then. Did not go on any of the ships. Shared a taxi with 4 others on the way back and the driver gave us a short tour with a stop at Waikiki for an hour.

Please correct me if I am wrong but isn't this a free attraction? I know the lines are long but don't recall there being a charge to get in...and we've gone three times ... but in the not so recent past.

I think companies charge to take you there but the bus is definitely an option but after you are staying there would be my suggestion. The lines will most likely be very long with a large cruise ship in town.

You are right, of course. Should have said that we queued to get our timed tickets. Think maybe you have to pay to go over the ships. We got off the ship as soon as we could and made our way by taxi so we were there promptly but still had quite a wait. It was one of the highlights of our cruise - a very moving experience.

We had a rental car for the 3 days pre-cruise. We just drove to the Memorial, walked around a short time while waiting for our number to be called. They escort you in to watch a video and then take you to the launch to go to the Arizona. So incredibly moving.

I think people are referring to the very modest online fee for booking the free timed tickets ahead of time. Otherwise you can show up and line up for tickets only to learn they have run out for that day.

This why asked the question, because I want to get the tickets ahead time through the National Park Service and have a guaranteed ticket and time. Still 11 months away no need to make a decision now. Thanks for your help!

We booked an amphibian "Duck" tour online that picked us up at our hotel, brought us to get the tickets (tour operator got the tickets for us), and took us into the water, showing us Diamondhead and other sites until it was our time to see the Arizona. Afterwards, the tour continued on the "Duck" around the Island. It is a very emotional experience standing on the Arizona. The day we were there, a sailor had been interred, just prior to our boarding the Arizona.
