Gem Renovations

I should have checked Cruse Critic prior to booking. We decided to go on the Norwegian Gem over Christmas and booked directly with Norwegian. We cruised the same ship two years prior and our kids kept busy with the Rock Climbing and Miniature Golf. Unfortunately the cruise agent did not let us know that:

Rock Climbing CLOSED for entire cruise

Mini Golf CLOSED for entire cruise

Basketball CLOSED every evening and for two days during cruise.

When we complained onboard the assistant cruise director told us the travel agent should have informed us. As we booked direct with Norwegian there was not travel agent and the cruise consultant did not tell us about any closures.

Only compensation offered was a small onboard credit if we cruise Norwegian again.

WILL NEVER CRUISE THIS LINE AGAIN.

Sorry you were misinformed.

Only the Rock wall was unavailable and one golf putting area on the port side. Golf putting area was open on the Starboard side of the ship.

Sorry you booked a cruise to climb the wall and didn't get to. But everything else was available.

I can understand your frustration with not being properly informed but i wouldnt dismiss the entire cruiseline over one employee's lack of follow through. Its like chopping down the entire apple tree because of one bad apple.

Don't assume that. The Gem is scheduled to go through additional renovations before the end of the year. NCL doesn't give the exact dates and if you cruise on one of the "cheap" weeks... You know the weeks after thanksgiving but before Christmas you could very well be on board during a renovation. This uncertainty (and thread) was one of the reasons I ultimately selected getaway over gem (with no airfare).

Not sure what you are saying. October 30-November 13th the Gem is scheduled for dry dock.

She will be in Freeport, Bahamas without passengers. Excited and can't wait to see what she will look like after all has been done!!!

I had read that the suites were supposed to be renovated but other cc members said that was nixed so I am hoping it is true!

I have also heard suites and Haven will be renovated, as well as public areas onboard too. Bliss won't look the same anymore as far as what I am hearing. No more bowling alleys. They will be removed as they are doing right now to the Epic.

Quick basic question........I see Gem just returned to NY, so it's heading to Freeport today? Empty? Or did they offer a one way cruise?

I, too, am excited to see how she changes!

Yes, 600 plus workers will board in NY today and start working as the ship heads to Freeport. They expect to finish the work as the ship returns to NY in two weeks. The Capt told me the ship will be like new, no part will go untouched.

Thank you, I had thought I had read it somewhere on here that this was the case. The epic had a person who took pictures and updates...wonder if we will find someone to do that for us :)

No part untouched? I'm just so skeptical that we will see very little improvement. Maybe new carpet and mattresses but does anyone expect they will gut the mdr or add a new pool (jk) or install an outdoor movie screen?

Or completely clean up the casino etc etc

IMHO it will be superficial at best that we will see

I like the gem but I also like mega ships and I even like the carnival huge atriums and new ships but the gem has an awesome 10 day that I booked at an incredible price so I'm happy with whatever they do

But to think that nothing will go untouched is meant to mean anything more than scrubbing down walls and cleaning carpets and please please replacing the horrible atrium sofas is just kidding themselves....although I honestly wouldn't mind being proved wrong here. Lol

I guess there might also mechanical improvements planned that we wouldn't see anyway.

There is another post with what will be done...I can tell you the slide is being taken down and a new one is being replaced. Carpets and furniture etc...you will have to take a read. This is a short dry dock though so we will see how much they can get done. Oh and no more bowling alley and a few other things

I expect to see lots of changes. They said there will be a new Bliss Lounge, new atrium, new casino, face lift and furniture in observation Lounge and repairs and face lift all around. He said a lot was added when FDR inspected the ship. Also a new pool deck. We were in the garden villa and they came in a few times to measure things. This was going to get done last year but at last minute the dry dock was canceled. The hull is getting done, the scrubber install worked on with engines shut down, plumbing system upgrades, shaft bearings replaced ect. I see no reason for him to lie as in two weeks or so all will see the result. I will in July.
