How bad is second hand smoke on Riviera?

I will second the comments about not smelling anything in the living and dining areas. We had Suite 12010 in September. The smoking section on the starboard side of the 12 deck (pool deck) did have the usual assortment of Euros hastening their demise but a quick walk past and no problem. Compared to Celebrity, you will encounter very little smoke issues on Oceania. Focus on the itinerary and enjoy!

I followed your posts for September. Didn't realize you were in 12010, probably missed it. Hey, can't find a lot of pictures of Oceania Suites, especially of bathroom, wardrobe and media room. Don't suppose you'd care to post a few. How big is the balcony in terms of dining or sunning?

Of several cruises lines that we have sailed on, Oceania is the least 'smokey'.The only cruise that we encountered any significant smoke was on the Riviera when a group of almost 300 were on board as a company perk.....none of whom were 'Euros'.

 

I believe that the semi- glassed smoking areas in Horizons now have doors on them.....although I don't know if that is on all of Oceania's ships yet, as we avoid that area and use the entrance to Horizons in the non-smoking area.

I am not sure that the pejorative reference to "assortment of Euros hastening their demise" is really necessary here! On our Oceania cruise the smokers seemed to be from the USA. Can we perhaps keep nationalities out of this, or at least be nice when we refer to differences?

 

And as for Mediterranean ports - Spain, France and Italy all have laws that ban smoking in enclosed public spaces (like Switzerland does but you won't be coming to a Swiss port!) I have no idea what the Portugese do but I have to assume it is the same as the other countries.

Going on my first cruise in July on Oceana Riviera and it never occurred to me that they would have smoking in the pool deck! Kind of distressed about this, I am very sensitive to smoke and can't be around it.

 

We are in a butler suite, do people smoke in their suites? I have had to check out of hotels because of smoke smell in the rooms, concerned that the rooms will reek of smoke.

 

Traveling with my mom, she is a former smoker and is not bothered at all by this. She has been on many cruises, mainly Regent, and I think it has not occurred to her that it could be a problem.

Here is the answer to the FAQ on smoking:

 

Can I smoke onboard?For the safety and security of all guests and staff onboard, Designated Smoking Areas are available on Deck 9, the forward starboard corner of the Pool Deck, and Deck 10, in the aft, port corner of Horizons. These areas are comfortably furnished and conveniently located near food and beverage areas. Smoking is expressly forbidden in all Staterooms and Suites, on verandas, or in any areas of the ship other than officially Designated Smoking Areas. Smoking in a stateroom or suite represents a serious fire and safety hazard to all guests and staff. Guests choosing to disregard this policy will be disembarked at the next port of call and may also be subject to additional fees that will be imposed to cover the costs associated with any damage to and the required cleaning of furnishings, verandas and surrounding deck or accommodation areas. All areas other than those specified as Designated Smoking Areas will remain smoke-free. This includes all guest suites and staterooms, verandas, restaurants, public areas, the Casino and all other areas of the ship. Cigar and Pipe smoking is only permitted on the forward starboard corner of the Pool Deck.
