Thanks so much for the fast replies. Do you know what the price is? Really appreciate this information.

Depends upon he size bottle you buy. But it is cheap. Probably 5 bucks for a good size bottle. They have both clear and dark. There is no difference. I buy the clear since it doesn't add any color to my baking.

Does anyone know of a good place to purchase vanilla in Puerto Vallarta or Mazatlan. I did a search but all the things that popped up were very old. I was also wondering about Olive oil. Thanks in advance for any information.

Check out this site. (And do some research of your own as well. Buying true vanilla in Mexico is far more complicated than simply going to the closest tourist shop and buying the cheapest thing out there. You could wind up with coumarin extract which is not FDA approved.)

Be careful here. Clear vanilla is far more likely to be artificial and since labeling requirements in Mexico pale in comparison to those in the US (pardon the pun), buying clear vanilla can be dicey. Indeed, you could spend an hour researching this on the internet and not come to a resolution as to whether or not "real" clear vanilla even exists. Compare the debates at these two chef websites:

I still can't decide who is right. But to the extent that this matters, McCormick is a pretty reputable spice company bound by US labeling laws, and they sell a variety of vanilla products. But their "clear" is clearly labeled as artificial. I would think that if "real" clear vanilla existed, they would sell it. This, of course, is not authoritative, but it gives me pause.

In fact, I've done a search for U.S. purveyors bound by strict labeling laws and could not find a single seller of clear vanilla that did not put the word "imitation" on the bottle. Is it possible that Mexico is selling real clear vanilla when the same can't be found in the U.S.? I suppose so. But the Puerta Vallarta website posted above contains the following:

Clear colored products are pure synthetic vanillin.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing your research.
