Lisbon excursions

Any recommendations of things to do in Lisbon? Is it worth doing an excursion through P&O or out own thing? Thanks!

If it's your first time there, Lisbon is very easy to DIY. The Apollonia and Jardim do Tabacao docking points are very convenient for either using public transport or, if mobility isn't an issue, walking into town/to the attractions. Jardim do Tabacao is just a short, but sometimes steep walk to the Alfama Old own, St George's Castle, the Cathedral, shopping streets, etc. Beware if you're in Lisbon on a Monday - many of the attractions just as the Jeronimos Monastery, Belem Tower and museums are closed. It depends on the kind of things you like to do: general sightseeing, art, culture, history, something more adventurous/slightly off-piste? When we were in Lisbon recently after a walk around the shops we took a walk up to St George's Castle. This was not too strenuous and we took it steady. You can also go up there by tram, the number 28 goes there. There are also tuktuks there touting for business. On previous visits we gave done the hop on hop off bus and on one occasion we went to the Oceanarium. We caught a bus right outside the dock to do this. We have only done one ship's tour and that was to Sintra and Cascais. I believe it's possible to do this on your own by train, maybe someone who has done this may be able to help.

Cascais by train is really easy - about 30 mins each way along the coastal line through Estoril. Nice little town.

Recommend HOHO bus which leaves from the dock gates.

If I remember rightly we booked the bus on board ship (Oriana) earlier this year and it was charged to our on board account.

Depends on where the ship docks. We were told it was 15 min walk to station. We are quick walkers and it took us 40 mins. We took a bus from the station back to the ship. However Cascais is lovely and worth a visit. Sintra is also a must. We did a private tour to there.

I suggest OP does some basicindependent research rather than ask questions about every port.

 

Lisbon is far too big to do everything in a day. In one day I wouldn't even consider Cascais. It's like advising someone visiting London to go to Brighton!

 

We have spent a full day on a cruise in Lisbon, plus a week in Cascais with two full days in Lisbon and still haven't seen everything it has to offer.

If you walk to the nearest metro station you can buy a bus/tram/metro day ticket for 6 euros plus 50 cents for the card. The instructions are in english but the tram is not shown on the screen (it is included)

HoHo bus out to Belem is great - Maritime and army museums, Geronimous Monastery, Monument to the Navigators and Belem Tower. It also gives a good overview of the city. St George's Castle is wonderful for good views. Don't forget the historic elevator up to the higher old town - lots to see and do. Try looking at wehatetourism website - we have used them 3 times in Lisbon and they are extremely good and something a bit different

Lisbon is very easy to do on your own. Here is a short video of our day in Lisbon, just watch out for pick pockets on the trams!
