Just got back from the Quantum Holiday Cruise

All in all we were very disappointed in Royal Caribbean and the Quantum of the Seas. My family spent a lot of money on our 'Holiday Cruise' (we had one Junior Suite and 3 staterooms) and felt afterwards the trip was a money grab. From the get-go the reservation system didn't work and this only showed more on board where schedules didn't match, dinner reservations were missing, and excursions were longer than originally stated online. Although the food was excellent, all restaurants were clearly understaffed, so badly that on Christmas Eve we spent 3 1/2 hours at Chops Grille (RC actually refunded us for that dinner). Everywhere you went you had to stand in long lines. My son and I spent 2 hours waiting for a balloon artist. During de-embarkation in Nassau we stood in line on the stairs for over an hour and one couldn't help but wonder how RC would handle crowds during an emergency. On Christmas Day we had to wait in line for over an hour for my son's RC Christmas gift. The ship was absolutely beautiful, but if you advertise this as a Holiday cruise one would expect decorations, carolers, and specific holiday entertainment. Except for one large Christmas tree on the Royal Esplanade and waiting in line for Santa for over an hour there was absolutely nothing to remind you that this was a Holiday Cruise. Our stateroom attendant was fantastic, however it is now RC's policy that they do not provide you with new shampoo, conditioner etc. unless you ask your stateroom attendant! Really Royal Caribbean? How cheap can you get!

The on-board staff was a bit of a mixed bag..some were very friendly and really tried their best, while others clearly couldn't care less about the guests. Many of our fellow passengers complained about RC's lack of service as well and you know that when a priest on Christmas Eve makes not one but two comments about how we have 'to be gentle in our comments and not only see the negative' , RC is fully aware that people were not happy.

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience, I would be annoyed too if I had spent so much money on a Q holiday sailing just to have that experience. Unfortunately your experience seems to have been rather common based on the reviews so far... While some of our grumpier posters may criticize you for a negative first post (just to warn you), I appreciated your balanced review.

Welcome to CC!

Sorry to hear about your cruise.

Was this a 8 day cruise? How was the weather/rough water on the sea days?

Did your son go to the kids club? Was the wait for the bumper cars long as well....

Just trying to decide if I want to try it...

I am communicating with my son who is currently on the Quantum. He has several RCI cruises under his belt in all classes of their ships (he is Emerald - close to Diamond.) His overall impression is that the ship is really nice but the service has been abysmal and the last straw was a reported power outage in his stateroom that was not responded to without a trip to Guest Services 6 hours later. Restaurant service has been terribly slow.

This is a holiday sailing and some delays are to be expected with a full ship but I do not think bad service in their eating venues should be acceptable any

time of the year.

The app to schedule reservations is not working and this coming from an IT specialist so it is not user error.

Come on Royal Caribbean - I really want this ship to WOW.

All in all we were very disappointed in Royal Caribbean and the Quantum of the Seas.

Read you review on review page, I added mine as well, sailed Disaster Dining with you.

I am mid 60's, wife late 50's, this was RCL cruise 14 of 63 past cruises. Started 1984 seen plenty of changes so it wasn't just that cruising is changing. This is simply changes that change the whole previous concept.

Embarkation: Looked like scene from Walking Dead series. You know all those confused bodies walking aimlessly looking for that one still alive person. In this case designated by someone with a table. Security stations no distinct lines so just kind of push your way up to a conveyor belt. We were there 11:00 our " appointment time " though have no idea why they even have those. Was not relevant to anything that I noted. Finally through detector finally find tablet person. Waited for 10 minutes for her to complete people then had to assert that I was indeed the next in line. My pic came up wives did not, oops never mind system down and off the floor she walks. We were lucky though we got the infamous GREEN STAMP. No stamp not checked in. Numerous people hunting the GREEN STAMP since their tablet person could't complete process. The 10 minute touted check in, 45 minutes from luggage drop to up escalator. Sailed from old terminal on Explorer in October was quicker and easier even with buses. You need desks, you need lines, you need procedures Bayonne! Tablet people walking may work for 2 day 1000 pass trip, 4,800 plus pass sailings, not so much. They did have some podiums but again no designated line and confusing signage. Also would okay with 45 minutes from luggage to onboard EXCEPT they are the ones claiming 10 to 15 minute time frame.

CABIN - 13620 - Seapass on door other in cabin with WOW bands. Seapasses worked bands needed to be reprogrammed. This is 13th deck superior ocean view with balcony. Cabin itself very well appointed with storage etc. Any card will work in power slot to turn on electricity in cabin. We used a Princess sea pass left it in no problem. NOTE if you pull card when you leave and kill power OUTLETS still live if charging stuff thankfully. NOTE They are not kidding when they say balcony door must be closed or AC goes off, in fact door must actually also be in locked position. Yes you can place it in locked position from outside. It is not locked from entry just locked from movement. The handle has a chip in it which means door must be fully closed and handle rotated or no AC anymore.

Cabins in midship area are covered by an overhang which is three times the width of your deck. That overhang is also the steel plated floor for upper outside decks. It is what males the upper pool decks etc so wide. However plan to never get sun and also plan to get up early. They put out deck chairs around 6 am most mornings. You will know by the first bang which sounds like Thor's hammer hitting the steel deck. That will last about 30 minutes. I can almost sleep through anything and usually enjoy ship sounds, this, not so much. You would have thought someone would have considered a little sound proofing material.

The deck arrangements are odd in that from my balcony you have a great view into all the foreword and aft balconies as many actually face you. You would have to take a look some pics of the ship to see what I mean.

Our Cabin steward Marcia Brown was a highlight of the accommodations providing anything asked promptly and always there with a pleasant good morning etc. You do have to ask, even ice bucket is by request. They actually have a sign in room, ice by request only. If you don't see it ask for it like shampoo etc.

GOOD THINGS: staff though obviously overworked always pleasant. TWO70 area and Cafe a highlight, really liked getting paid coffee and complimentary breakfast items there. The shows Mama Mia and Sound Odyssey great. Ripcord by IFly great! Food itself for most part very good, liked buffet food offerings and design, plenty of seating etc. Sadly not much else struck our fancy.

OTHER - Solarium section usually a favorite with us not so much. Thought absolutely a gorgeous area appearance wise it is fully enclosed felt stuffy and had a noise undercurrent that was very odd. The pool falls, low background mood music all made for some kind of ambient low level noise that made it hard to talk or even concentrate to me anyway. The other indoor pool area better and opens to air to some degree. The open pool was great but this for me was because no bands or activities going on. That would certainly be a downside to many I would think.

No real problems with tech. Yes the WOW bands both had to be recoded to work, don't like them anyway. Elevators large and running well most times. Some small problems like only one side of buttons worked at times in some, nothing major. Others must have had some levels of problems because Guest Services was very, very busy first couple of days. We went only to get wires WOW band recoded. NOTE if Diamond etc concierge can do it from her terminal.

DINING - I won't go way into it certainly being covered. We hate it, no middle ground. From being pretty much forced to eat at some pay restaurants, menus just not large enough in each to make staying solely with complimentary ones. If you do not have reservations made already when come onboard you will have problems if ship is well booked. Non reservation lines LONG! Some wait even with reservations. I found it interesting that in Paid CHOPS if I wanted lobster still even in extra pay it is extra charge $21. If I wanted better aged steak $18. Most of the issues have been well covered. Come on in extra paid restaurant Jamiees Italian ( the best one by the way ) 2.95 for American coffee ( not speciality ) really pay extra each and still you are going to chafe me for the coffee because brewed? In Chops it $8 speciality coffees if not just instant syrup junk coffee? REALLY! Waters over stressed and they will tell you IF no one is around that they hate system. Nobody is happy. We shall see.

MAKE reservations online!!! Many evenings no reservations were told come back at 9:30 last seating. We had one day with no reservation wound up eating dinner in the buffet.

ENTERTAINMENT: obviously they are doing some great stuff but again I caution you make reservations online. Maybe some of these 2 day early sailings with 1000 people did't have lines. We had 4,800 something on board everything was a line almost. Even with multiple showings the theatre can't hold everyone wanting to see a show. Here's a problem, reservations go in first. SEAT HOLDER BEWARE. So reservation people go in, some people sent one in tell them hold 4 seats. We all now how that works, BUT, new game. 150 people without reservations standing in hallway 45 minutes until opens to all. they enter to claim the 50 unoccupied seats. Seat holder says no those 3 seats are taken they will be right here. Well guess what after waiting 45 minutes in line no one wants to hear you are saving seats. A couple near physical confrontations witnessed personally, a few hot words exchanged. If you have reservations all go at same time or risk a problem.

We did not get to see 270 Star whatever show no reservations available though tried early but online didn't allow me to. Since that is a small venue we weren't going to even try to wait on non-reservation line because doubtful would get anywhere near a seat. No matter what a pain make your reservations for food and entrainment online. Most everything spoken for by end of first day I would bet.

We will never sail Dynamic Dining ever again. I will go land resorts first!!! Service and uniqueness of main dining waiter relationship etc lost. We like meeting table mates etc. This is just like eating out at home, so why bother getting on something that rocks in bad weather?

Bumper cars, cute, after waiting for 45 minutes then getting 9 minute ride would you bother to ever go again? Same with the Star, unique once, after that going to stand on line for an hour to do it again? Robot bar, everyone seemed to agree that was just a wasted space.

Roving Bar service near non-existent by the way. Most part plan to bar and get your own. Maybe because many already paid for drink plan why make it easy?

ROOM SERVICE: we only do the rolls and coffee so didn't pay for hot items. But complimentary juice, no idea what that was orange fissile water or something nothing like any juice. Even tried carrot juice...still I am not paying $4 for a glass of real juice.

We were also on this holiday 12/20 sailing, so I'll chime in with our comments, if the OP doesn't mind.

Check-in: I found it difficult to identify the roaming check-in staff with their tablets and light blue vests as I found my eyes drawn to the bright yellow vests of the photographers instead- I would suggest that RCCL rethink this and possibly switch their assigned colors.

We also needed to see the pier coordinator and nurse upon check-in to have our DD evaluated prior to boarding, but then we were left with unclear directions and so returned to the pier coordinator station after being unable to locate the first staffperson who had begun our check in process, only to find a bug in their system that took yet more time to resolve. Also, no attempt at RFID tags on our luggage- no sure if others were receiving them.

Once on board, we had access to our stateroom right away although I understand that some were not available until after 1pm. Our Wow bands did not work on our door, and we never bothered to have them reprogrammed- just used the seapass cards instead. We were in an obstructed view balcony on deck 6 that was probably 50-75% obstructed view, but we were expecting that when booking the cabin.

We were able to ride the bumper cars with only a miminal wait this afternoon- the first of several rides during the week, and the wait times did increase during the week. The Seaplex was one of our favorite spots onboard, with the ping pong tables and foosball games around the upper level and music playing along with whatever main activity is going on in the lower level- bumper cars, roller skating, free play basketball, etc- just a fun place to hang out. Oh, and the Xbox game stations are here, too.

We did North star the 2nd morning with about a 20 minute wait between 9-10am, and again in Nassau evening- no wait, no reservations for either ride. Dad and DD did Ifly on the last seaday with reservations and said it was awesome.

We had pre-booked the shows, and enjoyed them all- Mama Mia, Sonic Odyessy and Star Water, however we found that even with reservations, we needed to go 30-45 minutes ahead of showtime to get prime seats. On the Temptations tribute show in the Royal theater and also the Bon Jovi tribute show in the Music Hall, the music was too loud for us that we ended up leaving before the show's end.

DD did go to the kid's club a few times more towards the end of the week, and she had a great time in the Voyagers group (9-11)- she also would use the self-check in and out procedure, and did stay into the late night party zone (after 10pm) a few nights when they start charging.

Regarding the holiday aspect of this cruise, we did play Christmas trivia, we watched a lovely duo (guitar and violin) in the music hall playing christmas music one evening, there were repeated listings in the compass for christmas enrichment sessions- though I never went to one of those, we did watch the christmas eve caroling for a bit and saw santa's arrival christmas morning, but let the line dwindle a bit before heading down to pick up DD's present.

Then finally, the dining aspect- we found that the menus were limited compared to what was offered previously in the MDR and we only experienced minor wait times since we had booked early reservations (5:30-6:15), so the restaurants had not really gotten backed up when we arrived, but we definitely saw what others are complaining about when we left, with long lines galore. I was very surprised when we went to American Icon for lunch on a sea day only to find they had the essentially the same menu with the addition of 3 sandwiches- That's it? Really? So back to Windjammer we went.....(after waiting in line, of course).

We did eat at several of the pay restaurants, and DH commented that he remembers when the MDR had food like that, and there were several areas that good complimentary food- cafe at 270 needs to be bigger because it can't handle the demand and gets very crowded. Very nice variety of items in Windjammer although the variety doesn't necessarily change greatly from day to day, but they have well labeled stations- just need more staff to clear the empty tables quicker. Very nice outdoor seating area in the back that grew more popular as the week went on and people figured out it was there.

Johnny Rocket's was as expected (good) but it took forever to place the order both times we stopped by- even though they had more than one staff working, they only had one staff taking orders and doing other work as well, so it could be a while before order taking time came around again....

Overall, we had a nice Christmas week (this being our first christmas cruise), with the new aspects of the ship like the Seaplex and Northstar along with the great shows being the highlights, and the dining situation being the low point. We'll stick with non-dynamic dining ships going forward.....

My DW and myself will be on the Quantum departing January 11. We are sailing with another couple. I have a few questions that I hope some of you can answer.

1) I have read several negative reviews about the soda machines running out of soda before the cruise ended. Did any of you experience this and, if so, did RCCL rectify the problem to your satisfaction? I wanted to purchase a non-alcoholic package but am hesitant if this is the case.

2) I am disabled and require the use of a mobility scooter to get around. Did any of you experience or see any problems that I might encounter, especially in the restaurants or the shows?

3) Although not a fan of dynamic dining (much prefer traditional), I am willing to give it a try. Are there other restaurants where one can get a burger, pizza, sushi, etc. in the event everything is 'screwed up' once we board? We have made online reservations for the restaurants and shows but anything could happen once we board.

Thanks for any responses.

Hi Tom,

Please see my answers to your questions below:

1. We had the ultimate package which included the special soda cups. We had no issues with empty soda machines and actually enjoyed the large variety.

2. My brother-in law was using a wheel chair most of the time and this was absolutely no issue anywhere, except perhaps in the gangways where stateroom attendants had their service carts. We did have an issue with the service elevator by 270 and got stuck. Later on we learnt they have issues with this particular elevator all the time.

3. Yes, there is Sorrento's for pizza and of course the Windjammer.

I hope your experience is better than ours :)

We were on this same cruise and found it one of the best we were ever on except for all the wining people. Loved the dynamic dining. Had plenty of selections on the menu. I cannot understand why they say there is not enoght variety, there is at least five or six entries times 4 resturants is 24 different things to eat.

There were lines for things but were in this world that we now live is there not. If we want to eat out on a Friday night here at our local eating places there is always a 45 minute wait. When you go to a ride park like Disney or Universal an 45 minute wait for 2 minute ride is short. In fact we spent a couple of days in New York after the cruise and we had to wait for everything we did such as an four hour wait to go into the Empire State Building and a three hour wait to get into a restaurant.

Once again we had a wonderful time on this cruise and have another one booked on the Quantum.

We have Diamond status on Royal and the equivalent on several other cruise lines so this was not the first rodeo for us.

We are going on the ship March 21 and we totally agree with all of your comments. Whenever we go out to eat, we have to wait in a line for a table and there is plenty of times that you wait for a table and see empty ones, it happens all the time. As for the rides, you wait in lines at your local amusement park (six flags) all the times and sometimes for over an hour and its usually in the sun, so it is HOT.

We think that most of these complaints are from people who want everything perfect and life isn't perfect.

If you are given lemons make lemonade and have some fun.

Absolutely !

Why can't people wait their turn ?

Who wants to eat a meal in 1 hour ?

Seriously, what is the rush ?

@cool cruiser and Nicole and Barry -

Looking at all the reviews I guess there must have been a lot of whiners on this ship. However, if I were RC I would take these reviews seriously and not just call us a bunch of whiners. I am glad you had good time and believe you guys are saints for thinking waiting for 4 hours is acceptable.

If you like variety, you might be fine. If you prefer only certain dishes, it was difficult to find enough options without the alternative menu that used to be offered in the MDR each evening. I only stumbled on that the last night in Chic- the others didn't have it.

That was one of the best things I liked about cruising as a family- others could enjoy as many varied and exoctic dishes as they desired while I could still get the dishes I wanted, so everyone was happy- not so with dynamic dining.

I'm used to call ahead seating and reservations when we go out for dinner on land and going to Disney in the offseason so as to avoid the lines whenever possible, especially on vacation.

It just seemed like Oasis was built to handle crowds better than Quantum, as that ship never felt crowded, so we were scratching our heads, wondering why Quantum wasn't better designed (e.g., the esplande seemed tight with people often).

For the poster asking about the soda packages- I had one as well. The soda cup was delivered to our cabin after dinner the first evening, but I could get soda during the afternoon using my seapass at the bars, and there were only a few times during the week when one of my favorite flavors were out of stock in the machines, but they were replenished the next time I checked a couple of hours later.

Thank you for posting your comments. We too are looking forward to the variety in the culinary offerings. That's why we booked Quantum--for the variety. Eating dinner in ten different restaurants--we can't wait! If people do not want to wait in lines they may want to explore booking a luxury cruise on a ship that caters to 400-700 passengers, not a mass market large ship where lines will be unavoidable.

Be well.

I never had a line to eat in a main dining room! You entered and sat at your table and your waiter and his assistant etc gave you service. The only line I ever saw for a traditional main dining room was the first day caused by people believing they had to get there and line up early.

As far as the rest, you make my point by likening all the lines, wait for dinners etc, JUST LIKE HOME. Experienced cruisers are not used to having it be just like home, you are? In fact this is why we cruise, because NOT just like home! If I wanted it to be the same weary reservation 4 hour wait system as home I would stay home, why get a big ship that can rock? Why pay all that money for what I already have daily? Service, comfort, uniqueness, all qualities we looked for on a cruise because we generally didn't get it at home. Making a cruise a floating amusement park with Mickey Dee's, I don't understand it. What is it you miss the 45 minute wait to eat? You miss crappy service? You miss lousy service?

Your description of Manhattan wait times, I certainly agree. Living 35 miles North of Manhattan I agree, that's why I never go there and now I don't have to I can go on Quantum and get same experience.

Like I said I don't understand it?

I'm glad you had a good time, but I have issues with your arguments. The difference being that when you go out to eat on a Friday night you should expect to wait for a table, and that food will generally take longer to be brought out. I know I don't have much cruising experience, but from the time I do have it has not been my understanding these waiting times are to be expected on a cruise.

Between the three cruise lines I have been on I can't recall ever waiting more than 5-10 minutes to be seated, or having to wait 30-45 minutes to have food brought after having ordered. We shouldn't have to walk from restaurant to restaurant and be turned away because they are all booked for the night, forcing us stand in line for over an hour at the one restaurant accepting people or eat at WJ. That is just absurd.

If they want to go with DD that's great, it sounds like a good concept to offer that variety some people are looking for. But they need to take a serious look at the program and redo it cause w/e they did on Quantum is a massive fail. Between understaffed and overworked wait staff to lack of seating availability and how the restaurants are managed, i.e. seating 5 couples at once in the same section with the same waiter, that's just disaster waiting to happen. Only 65 seat in Wonderland with about a 2 hour turn around per table? No wonder a large number of passengers were forced to miss out. Even half that in Izumi.

You're right I am one of those people. Stupid me I expect a product that's advertises it's self as a service oriented one to have service. I even expect things I buy at home to actually work, to be of quality materials, to have company stand behind what to sells, all that stupid stuff. I expect value for a buck, I know I am just an ignorant old guy. If I pay extra maybe they will let me cook my own food too, oh wait they do have a program like that on some ships for extra bucks. Please give me more lemons so I can make lemonade and pee my money away :)

I must be getting old because the other 63 cruises, many of which I reviewed here and can still be found here rated the ships far better this this monetized ship. And suddenly here I am a whiner.

Never had a bad cruise including this one, but it came close!

Pay more for less, the new American way.

I too was on the Holiday Cruise on Quantum. I have a little bit of a different take on the cruise.

Check in. Painless. If you uploaded your photo as instructed prior to boarding day and showed up at your scheduled time they were ready for you . Locate the staff in the clearly marked turquoise apparel holding ipads they took your information, green stamped you and off you went to board the lovely ship.

As far as Dynamic Dining goes, if you made your reservations ahead of time and arrived with your whole party a few minutes early for your reservation they were no lines, no waiting , no problem. Food like in any restaurant is hit or miss. We enjoyed all your meals, some better than others. One night we had to be out early for a show reservation , talk to the waiter and he did an excellent job getting us on on time. Including bring dessert in less than 2 minutes. Communication , Nice communication is a huge key to the overall smoothness of your experience.

Soda package... Yes in fact there were times that the soda you wanted in a machine was out of stock. Thankfully Quantum has many machines on the ship and you just need to find another machine.

You do need to ask your stateroom attendant for shampoo if you did not bring your own. They will happily bring you some. I think this is not being cheap but being realistic that probably the majority of people bring their own personal care products and this cuts down on their waste.

Be well.

Okay now YOU really confuse me since you list a signature ship list which goes back as far as mine would if I bothered to list such things. You have been waiting in lines ( exemption tender lines ) on all those ships in the past? The Oasis and the Allure are larger and I don't recall all the conflict in postings when they came out. What am I missing here?

Having sailed the Quantum I will also tell you that the photo's and appearance of the offerings exceeds the actual quality of same. In Chic I think it was I ordered a rib eye steak. I received a prime rib. When I questioned the waitress she smiled and said they had suggested that they change the menu to say prime rib since everyone asked. The Chef just gave them a history lesson on what a rib eye steak was.

So were the line admin, the ship chefs, the ship designer all surprised that the ship holds close to 5000 passengers and that they would want to eat? The reservation multiple restaurant system doesn't work on a ship for customers but monetizing multiple restaurants does for the bean counters. It is really that simple.

BUT WAIT I have a list TOO and guess what not a LUXURY ship on it. Wow look at the list I impress myself :)

Hello George,

A very impressive list indeed! We both have been around the ocean a few times ;) too. We have encountered lines from time to time, perhaps not as bad as what you endured on the Quantum. Your comments have been duly noted and when I return from the Quantum, I will share our experiences. I hope RCI works out a few more of the kinks in the next few weeks.

Be well.

Hi Snackdaddy, Hope you have a great cruise. I will be very interested in reading your review upon your sailing her.

Happy cruising

Very impressive list indeed George in NY. This was only our 5th cruise. But after being on the Allure in February with a record number of people (Captain made that announcement) I do have something to compare to. We had no long lines, great service and really enjoyed that cruise. This time we were simply not WOWed as RCCL promised they would do. In the end I agree with George. They are understaffed which comes directly from Corporate Headquarters. I really don't blame the staff onboard. Many tried their best and the ones that didn't seemed either overtired or had given up.

Keep in mind that RCCL has been in business for 45 years and this is not their first launch of a new ship. They should have this down to an art. After 8 weeks of bad reviews they should have added more staff already. Maybe they could have taken some of their excessive marketing budget and move it to the 'personnel' column.

I'd be curious to know what is Quantum's ratio of staff vs Pax and how it compares to other ships in the fleet.

I've been on both the Oasis and Allure and never experienced any staff shortage throughout the ship(s), except at customer's service desk--what else is new, always lines there. LOL
