edgeman61 Posted February 22, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 22, 2015 On our first cruise with HAL on the Amsterdam to Alaska, RT from Seattle, their was a BBQ after the sail-away. We were kind of taken aback by the event as we had just experienced the Lido lunch after boarding and had 8:00 fixed dining for dinner so we were not very hungry and did not want to ruin our dinner. Does this event still take place on the first day or has it been moved to later in the cruise. Thanks,
CruiserBruce Posted February 22, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 22, 2015 It varies by ship.
Rare donswife Posted February 22, 2015 #3 Share Posted February 22, 2015 On our Westerdam Alaska cruise last summer there was a lido deck BBQ featuring grilled salmon on the day we left Ketchikan, as sail-away was about 1:00. I don't recall one on departure day.
sail7seas Posted February 23, 2015 #4 Share Posted February 23, 2015 The barbeque was an option for dinner. You had the choice to go to MDR or to the barbeque. :)
CowPrincess Posted February 23, 2015 #5 Share Posted February 23, 2015 I've done a few cruises to Alaska and can only remember one sailaway BBQ on the Aft deck. I think on our last Alaska cruise there was a BBQ at supper ish, one evening, in place of the Lido being open. (but don't quote me on that) :)
edgeman61 Posted February 23, 2015 Author #6 Share Posted February 23, 2015 IIRC when we left Seattle on our first Alaska cruise on the Amsterdam, the crew rolled out grills into the pool area between the Lido and the Spa area and cooked up burgers, ribs, chicken etc. We didn't partake at that time since we had just eaten lunch a few hours earlier and didn't want to ruin our dinner. We did an E. Caribbean cruise on the Eurodam, the BBQ was held later in the cruise on a sea day, I believe the day after we left St. Thomas. Knowing about the BBQ ahead of time allowed us to "adjust" our mealtimes to take part in the event.
PathfinderEss Posted February 23, 2015 #7 Share Posted February 23, 2015 It varies by ship. I agree with CruiserBruce, it can vary from ship to ship. Mostly we've had the barbeque in the afternoon but sometimes in the evening, too. Once we had one on the Zaandam where they served wild caught sockeye, it was awesome. Rare TiogaCruiser Posted February 23, 2015 #8 Share Posted February 23, 2015 We had one leaving Kodiak - it was an early departure a little after noon. They grilled salmon and served GIANT fresh blueberry pies. The pie plates were about 20" diameter.
