Airport Layover Time Too Short?

That is a dramatic understatement.

I worked through August there one year and I swear you could smell the lagoon from inside the plane at about 1000' up on the landing approach :)

I believe it!!!! :D

Our previous connections thru FRA (Athens, Zagreb, Vienna, Brussels)have all been at a terminal gate. Our upcoming trip is to Hamburg. How can we determine whether it is at a gate?

When you look at the departure board it will give a gate....if it's a short trip, under 2 hours say, you can bet your plane will be on the tarmac. When we went to AThens we were at a terminal gate, but to Vienna and Brussels we were on the tarmac. Could also depend on the time of the flight and # of passengers. Ours were all early morning flights.

I'd not want to miss a day either, even though I worked in Venice for nearly two years.

This is the bit that has me confused:

Monday is the 15th so I'm hoping the flight from Chicago is on the Saturday 13th, then the connection to Venice on Sunday morning 14th.

Mis-typed. Island Princess embark on the 15th, sails at 1PM on the 16th. Sorry about that.

Thanks for the update, the news is pretty good once you look at the details.

Your flight from Chicago generally arrives at one of the Z gates so although there is no guarantee, it is most likely that you will not be using a bus to get from the plane to the terminal.

Your flight to Venice departs from an A gate usually and the A gates are located in the same terminal below the Z gates, so although there is some walking involved, you will not be changing buildings and will have to go through passport control but you should not need to re-clear security.

They redeveloped this part of Terminal 1 a couple of years ago when they added the gates for the Airbus 380, specifically to make the transfers easier so all being well you should have no problems making your connection.

If you do somehow miss the connection you have little to worry about as there is another LH flight at 12:30 and 3 more direct flights after that. Also about 4 other indirect flights so nothing to worry about.

Just as a final encouragement, your connection time is actually 70 mins as you land at 7:15am and depart at 8:25am.

To make life easier on yourselves, get seats on the Chicago flight as far forward as you can and check again when you get to the airport as they hold back a number of seats towards the front for airport allocation. Explain you have a short connection and see if they can move you further forward.

I don't think you'll need it, but if you are still worried about the connection then there is a service you can buy which will have someone meet you at your arrival gate and get you to the departure gate in the quickest way possible:

WOW, all the times I fly into FRA, I never knew that. Of course, using a w/c makes it irrelevant to me, but what a boon to the person with a short lay-over!! GREAT FIND!! :D

We were just advised as to the extra 10 minutes time change, which helped ease our minds a bit. I also spoke with our TA and she assured me that all will be well. Thank you for all of the encouragement and positive thoughts! We have decided to hope for the best and be prepared for the worst. At least our ship (Island Princess) doesn't leave port until Tuesday, even though we embark on Monday. I am filing the link away for the escort just in case!
