What was YOUR experience on the Getaway?

I am booked on the Getaway the week after Thanksgiving. A friend just returned last week and said the ship was crazy. Very crowded and not much going on on the ship. Starting to wonder if I should change plans. We sailed the Oasis at the same time last year and there was no crowd whatsoever! I'm thinking that they went at a popular time! Help!

I was on the Getaway on it's third regular trip, more than a year ago. My answer to you is it all depends on what you do on the ship. It will only feel crowded if you do what everyone else is doing, at the time everyone else is doing it. The ship is big enough, and there is enough to do that you don't have to do what everyone else is doing.

Of course the pool and the buffet were crazy on sea days in the middle of the day. But during that time, I sat on the Waterfront, reading under the shade, with plenty of cushioned seats available, after a leisurely lunch in the MDR.

Isn't that the spirit of FreeStyle? Do what YOU like, not what the crowd likes, and you will never feel the crowd, you will only feel happiness :)

I have to agree with you, If your friend went just last week then he went during the first few weeks of summer vacation for school aged kids. That is high volume season for cruising. That said I Loved, Loved, Loved, the Getaway!!, We are Diamond level with Royal Caribean, so most of our cruising has been with them but NCL could totally win me over with these new ships! The daily schedule was packed with stuff to do. If you are somewhat active, there are 5 waterslides that would rival anything at wet and wild and also a ropes course. The entertainment is excellent!, At first I was a little put off because there is one venue that is a dinner theater and costs extra. I almost didn't do it but so happy I did...please whatever you do don't miss the Illusionarium!!! Even the bars were each distinctly different and a few of them offered unique entertainment. One was a dueling piano bar, so fun. another was a Grammy bar where they bring in different past Grammy winners to headline and play at the bar/club. There were also a couple of extra no fee restaurants to pick from Oshehans, like a pub with Applebee's type food and a Cuban restaurant open to the pool deck...so yummy I tried to eat there every afternoon! ...Well, if I talk much longer NCLS will have to pay me...Enjoy your cruise I envious!!!

I loved the Getaway. I thought the pool deck felt very crowded due to it's odd, somewhat cluttered layout. Other than that, no complaints with the ship itself. I can't fathom someone saying there was nothing to do. There are so many activities going on all the time, for all different interests and tastes, that it's impossible to not find something to do. To be honest, we booked 10 sea days on the Escape Transatlantic simply based on our need for more sea days in order to do activities on a ship after our Getaway experience.

Now this! Sounds like my kind of cruise:) It is all about choice I think, go where the crowds and the craziness is, or find a quieter, more relaxing part of the ship to read or watch the ocean go by. Cant wait:)

With school vacation season beginning now, Yes she can get a little crowded. I was on the 31st of May to the 6th of June and it was not bad. There is a lot do on the ship. Freestyle Daily has lots of activities for you to choose. If you are booked on the 6 December cruise, you will be between The Thanksgiving week and before the Christmas crowds. You should be fine. Great ship with great staff. Have fun.

Last week the Getaway had 4,600 people. My wife and I had several different ways to beat the crowds. (1) our balcony (2) the spa (3) the Haven although we did not use the courtyard as it was full of kids. We found the Getaway to be a very active ship. We stayed pretty busy and still did not have time for the following:

1. sports deck 2. ropes course 3. mini golf 4. water slides 5. swimming pool 6. Flamingo Grill 7. Buffet 8.Spice H2O (except one 70's party) 9. Headliners 10. The Grammy Experience 11. Illusionanarium 12. Casino 13. many more!

Plenty to do and plenty of places to getaway (sic) from the crowds. I had a fantastic time!

We have done the Oasis & Getaway same week 1 year apart. I believe the ships were at capacity or very close. I would never have guessed that many people were on board. I do agree with a poster above the buffet at prime hours will be busy and the pool area on sea days......but that is easy to work around with so many options

I enjoyed the Getaway a lot. I really like the ropes course, Waterfront, Spice H2O (there's just something about having a party on the open deck), Bliss Lounge, the casino atrium area and more. Even though I enjoy the Jewel-class ships, I also like the big ships and its layout. For activities, there will always be things going on. If not, just walk around and you can easily find things to do.

I'd love to hear some getting away from crowds spot. Bonus if I can put my feet up with a laptop. :)
