EdmundXXIII Posted June 29, 2015 #1 Share Posted June 29, 2015 In MANY threads, I've seen comments from people who seem to think surveillance cameras can see everything that happens on the balcony. Granted, this usually comes up when someone asks if they can enjoy some - as John Heald would put it - rumpy pumpy on their private balcony. Inevitably, someone will say that the cameras can see you. But privacy concerns are also valid for those of us who would like to know we can lounge or read a book on out "private" balcony. So, applying common sense to the situation, here's how it works: If you can see a camera, it can see you. Most Carnival ships do have cameras mounted on long polls that stick out near the front of the ships. From what I understand, this is so they can see along the sides and rear, in case someone goes overboard or a fire starts etc. And yes, depending on your location, those cameras may be able to see all or just part of your balcony. But for most cabins, to see those cameras you have to lean out past the divider. Which means they can't see your balcony. I just had to say it, because it's a pet peeve of mine when I see a comment where people are assuming that the cameras have some magical ability to see around corners. It just doesn't work that way! So enjoy your balcony in peace, unless you can actually see a camera from it.

bobsfamily Posted June 29, 2015 #3 Share Posted June 29, 2015 AND you think those cameras on the polls are the only cameras on the side of the ship? You think all the things sticking down from various places on the ship could be cameras? Have you looked online at what surveillance cameras can look like nowadays? You might want to look in the hallway at a hotel the next time you are staying in one and wonder why they have so many "things" to spray water in case of a fire.... at least one (most likely several) are cameras watching your re-arrange those underwear wedges or digging deep in that nose! I'm not saying they are but don't think the camera on the "stick" is the only one..

wlc108 Posted June 29, 2015 #14 Share Posted June 29, 2015 Besides cameras... Don't forget that guests in cabins on either side can see your reflection in the glass below the railing on some ships. Due to the angle, the reflection they see is different if they are sitting or standing.
CaribbeanLVR Posted June 29, 2015 #15 Share Posted June 29, 2015 (edited) I can care less if cameras are watching or not! If I have nothing to hide or have done nothing wrong I can give a rats behind! And if I ever decide to do my hanky/panky on the balcony that's the chance I take and those watching may just enjoy it Edited June 29, 2015 by CaribbeanLVR

Andy  I realize sometimes cameras are hidden. But they have to be attached to something. From an average balcony, there just aren't that many things sticking out far enough from the edge of the ship to look inwards at an angle that can see onto the balcony. I'm not paranoid enough to think they're actually putting cameras on our balconies. Why would they? It would be expensive to put hidden cameras there, provides no benefit to the cruise line, and if people found out there would be an uproar. Certainly, some balconies ARE going to be more visible than others from the security cameras, but most aren't.

EdmundXXIII Posted June 29, 2015 Author #21 Share Posted June 29, 2015 (edited) Ever do a thorough examination of your balcony light? No. The idea that Carnival is putting hidden cameras on our balconies seems absurd. I realize it would be technically possible, but why bother? Why spend the money on the tech and the people to use it? Do you think Mickey Arison is floating around on his private yacht watching a video feed of me eating breakfast on my balcony? Plus, if they WERE doing this, someone would have found the hidden cameras by now and put it on social media. It would be a huge controversy. elliair Posted June 29, 2015 #24 Share Posted June 29, 2015 So true! I had one woman tell me that if I hung up christmas lights INSIDE my cabin.....get ready for it..... "the bow of another ship will crash right into your cabin". LOL! Now that's hilarious! If you're on a Princess ship and you have a cabin on the Caribe deck, you can look over your hand rail and see the balcony below you. I've seen all kinds of things going on down below us. Those above you can also see down on to your balcony. There's very little privacy any where on a ship.
