cruzz34 Posted June 29, 2015 #1 Share Posted June 29, 2015 Hi all! Just read through a bunch of posts of the Glory and the Getaway and need help finalizing my decision I'm debating between the two. My husband and I are going on one with my parents, we're doing balcony and they're doing an inside room. Both inside and balcony are +$170 more per person for Getaway than inside and balcony on Glory, though balcony comes with the beverage package and inside with $50 credit on Getaway. For me, the beverage package makes up for it as the Getaway is newer, but not sure about my parents with the inside room (specifically +340 total minus $50 credit = $290 extra). Is it worth the price difference? Getaway: newer ship, no private island, more slides/activities, don't care about all the extra fee restaurants (MDRs are fine), first time with NCL Glory: older ship, private island, been on the cruise line and always had a good time, I think bigger rooms Any insight/help would be appreciated. Thanks!
chilidog11 Posted July 1, 2015 #2 Share Posted July 1, 2015 I can't comment on the Gateway but when we sailed the Glory, it was a very young crowd with a lot of kids. It was also very worn looking and to me it looked like vegas threw up. It was my first cruise so I was expecting something totally different. It was a carribean cruise. Rare mizLORInj Posted July 1, 2015 #3 Share Posted July 1, 2015 (edited) Is Glory going to Half Moon Cay? Any itinerary that does wins in my book. No comparison to anywhere else in the Caribbean/Bahamas. Sorry, NCL: GSC is nowhere near as awesome as HMC. I've been on Glory and it's a typical Carnival ship that IMO is just 'eh. I like the Alchemy Bar and the waterslide. And Carnival has provided many a fabulous cruise for me over the years. HMC could be the tipping point for me if I were choosing. . . Getaway compares to Breakaway which I've cruised several times and love it too. Though you are right, Getaway is brand new. . .If you choose this one we can help you with cabin selection so you don't end up over the noisy lounges or under the aft outdoor party venue. RE room size, Getaway and Breakaway have larger cabins than NCL's other older ships, and these are about the size of Carnival's balcony cabins. Hope you have a great time on whichever you cruise. TrinaLC Posted July 1, 2015 #4 Share Posted July 1, 2015 I've been on both and would choose the Getaway in a heartbeat. Plenty of quiet places to get away, with shade. The Serenity (adult) space on Glory is anything but serene, you hear the loud noise from the main pool area. One morning as we were entering port it was blasting Everybody Loves Raymond! Not my idea of how to glide into a lovely spot. There is tons to do on the Getaway and loads of options for eating. Even if the main dining room is "fine", you will find so many other options you may enjoy, and many of them are free.
tap_out Posted July 1, 2015 #5 Share Posted July 1, 2015 I have not been on Glory but have been on liberty basically the same ship. I would say it was one of my best cruises to date. We were also on the fence about booking the Glory or Getaway in August but ended up going with Getaway. While I am not thrilled about the itinerary the fact that Getaway is a new ship and included the UBP sold it for us. Not sure if you cruised Carnival before but in my opinion you don't cruise Carnival for the ships. The amount of things to do and the decor doesn't really stack up to other cruise lines. With that being said they are really a party at sea. If you have any questions about Carnival feel free to ask.
Heather1972 Posted July 1, 2015 #6 Share Posted July 1, 2015 NCL Getaway hands down.
moesyk4 Posted July 2, 2015 #7 Share Posted July 2, 2015 We have sailed Carnival many times and love them just as much as any cruise line for the right price, I don't understand the bad rap. We have not sailed the Getaway yet (will in September) so I can't compare with that, but I have sailed the Freedom of the Seas which I would consider comparable to the Getaway. For that amount of money, I would do the Getaway hands down, even for your parents. While for the right price I would go on and very much enjoy Carnival's ships, most Carnival ships pre Breeze are very basic....two pools, a few hot tubs, basic ship amenities, nothing special. A great way to get on a ship and relax, but nothing that would amaze you. On the Getaway, I would imagine you will run out of time before you run out of things to do. The ship is much, much newer and will have amenities that just can't compare. Like I said, we love Carnival, but for that small of a difference I wouldn't hesitate to jump over to NCL. tarps14 Posted July 2, 2015 #8 Share Posted July 2, 2015 Have sailed both and there is no comparison, Getaway all the way. As previously stated, the Glory is an older ship and, well, it showed way back when we sailed on it in 2008 (and she was only 5 yrs old even then). We have sailed many times on Carnival (our daughter even did one contract with the kids program on the Pride), and enjoyed each one (truth be told, Carnival, imho, actually has better food in the main dining room), but, the Getaway is just so far above the Glory, I can't even find anything else to compare between the ships, it is just that far apart. Will you have a good time on Carnival and the Glory? Yes, each cruise is what you make of it. We just enjoy the Getaway so much, we're fixing to go on it for the third time in September. Rare sid_9169 Posted July 2, 2015 #9 Share Posted July 2, 2015 I've been on both. The Getaway is far superior in every way. Not even a fair comparison. Also, NCL's Ultimate Beverage Package blows away Carnival's Cheers drink package... That being said, any day on any cruise is better than any day at work... put me on a ship Posted July 2, 2015 #10 Share Posted July 2, 2015 We've also sailed on both, and I would choose Getaway in a heartbeat! There really is no comparison between the 2 ships...Glory is old and tired, Getaway is incredible. Entertainment is SO much better on ANY NCL ship compared to Carnival, food is comparable, and we think service is better with NCL.
kcwingwalker Posted July 2, 2015 #11 Share Posted July 2, 2015 NCL would be my choice and a big plus is that NCL does not have dancing waiters Hope you enjoy your cruise:)
Pia1913 Posted July 2, 2015 #12 Share Posted July 2, 2015 Was on Getaway in May and going again July 25th. Carnival to us is always last choice. The very last choice. See above post. We also despise that nightly "entertainment."
Boorin Posted July 3, 2015 #13 Share Posted July 3, 2015 We r going to the getaway this October... First time... Reading all the review can assure me that getaway is a much better ship. Why? Because I been on the carnival glory and some people here got it right. The rooms are much bigger but the crowd are wrong for someone who doesn't have kids. I went with my dad and my co worker we did nothing much other then casino and eat. The activities were more towards kids. We didn't want to spend too much on drinks as we don't have the drink package back then. Reading what Norwegian have to offer and seeing all the reviews and dailies it sounds like they have more stuff to do.
Seany527 Posted July 3, 2015 #14 Share Posted July 3, 2015 It was also very worn looking.... This statement is spot on. It took away from the whole ambiance of the cruise :( I will say the crew was top notch :)

I agree with you as for GSC, I am not impressed. In fact I like the old GSC better, but I wouldn't base a cruise on a private island. The Glory is the gaudiest ship I have even seen. For some, the private island might make a difference, for me, the overall ship makes the difference. I would take the almost new Getaway anytime. This is just my personal view, plus, although Carnival is no more just for partying and young families, there will be more of that on the ship than on the Getaway. At least that has been my experience
mobu2015 Posted July 3, 2015 #16 Share Posted July 3, 2015 I haven't been on either the Getaway or the Glory, but I've been on their sister ships NCL Breakaway and Carnival Legend. We have sailed Carnival several times and tried NCL for the first time last week. To us, the crowd/atmosphere was very very similar. They were both party crowds and lots of kids. I have never cared for the entertainment or decor on Carnival. I much prefer the modern understated decor on NCL, but did not partake in the entertainment so can't comment there. The balcony on the breakaway was tiny. Carnivals is much bigger. We were in a minisuite on Breakaway so we had a larger bathroom but the cabin sizes were every similar. As for food, I liked the variety on NCL. Like you, we don't dine at speciality restaurants and ate at the MDR every night. The menus had more variety than Carnival but the desserts on Carnival are superior. The buffet and other free restaurants on NCL also win in my book, except for O'Sheehan which was a sad disappointment. There is more to do on the newer NCL ships as well. Think about itinerary and if that might sway you one way or the other. I would sail on both lines again but would cruise with Carnival only if we were with a big group of friends or family, as it makes it more fun. I'd sail on NCL with just my husband and son as there is more for us to do alone, whereas a big group on Carnival makes up for what is lacking. rbird Posted July 8, 2015 #19 Share Posted July 8, 2015 You get what you pay for in my opinion. More money per pax = totally worth it for NCL vs CCL older ship.
