I just got off her yesterday. Yes it is Moderno. We only went a few times as we just had so many options and wanted to try several things...but the food there was very good. They have Cagneys truffle fries which were a huge hit with my daughter.

Thank you Jen. We don't leave until September 19, a 10 day Alaska. Seems we don't usually hit the breakfast or lunch there many times per cruise either. My favorite meal there is ALWAYS embarkation day lunch, when you have the whole cruise ahead of you. It is a nice, quiet option when you have time.

Hope you enjoyed your cruise! Love Alaska, this will be our 3rd time.

Maybe it is just me but I did not feel it was nearly as nice in Moderno than it was in Cagney's Last November we sailing on the Jewel out of Houston and the March just before we sailed out of New Orleans. Both DH and I commented that we just felt the service was not nearly as good for both breakfast and lunch as it was when it was in Cagney's :( We return to the Jewel in November out of LA and will see on embarkation lunch if it has improved. If not I am more than happy with the Garden Cafe :) While I like the French Press Coffee I can always go back to the cabin and have some Lavazza.

Does anyone know the reason they actually moved it to Moderno:confused:

I'm glad OP asked this because everything I've read so far said Cagneys. I'm kind of bummed. Isn't Modernos more of an open set up? I think I would prefer an enclosed restaurant vibe over one with people walking past, at least some of the time. I could be wrong -- I'm finding it difficult to track down current Jewel photos after the last short dry dock. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Modernos was relocated at that point. (And were the suites cosmetically revamped? I read that they had some kind of refresh, but no one has posted current videos or pics that I've found. I'm hoping the awful green carpet is gone in the Haven family suites. Too Carnival for me, lol. It's not a big deal, but a more relaxing color scheme would be very nice)

Happily, if we don't want to eat in Modernos all the time, we can just order in the Courtyard or in our room. Or try one of the other options. I always love the Indian food in the buffet.

Lisa -- Hope you will post a review and maybe dailies if you can. So much of what I'm finding about the Jewel is somewhat outdated. Also curious (no idea why, but it keeps popping into my head) about the Haven embarkation experience out of the Port of Los Angeles.

Moderno has been moved to deck 13 just opposite side of Cagney's where Star Bar and Cagney's extension was - so no, it is not an open setup in any way. No real difference to Cagney's with the exception that Moderno has already fixed table for breakfast buffet unlike Cagney's.

And no, I haven't heard that any ship would have undergone any mentionable cosmetic revamps regarding suites (with the obivious exception of suites on new ships and new deck 12 suites on Dawn class ships) - the bright color schemes have been there since the beginning and through numerous dry docks.

Great, thanks for the info -- does Moderno sort of look out over deck 12 if you are seated near the railing? I saw a photo post move that gave the impression of an open area. It's not that I'm against open areas, just sometimes like the intimate experience and sometimes the open one.

I read a review of the Jewel (can't remember which one exactly) in which the reviewer mentioned a suite refresh, but with no details. I had my fingers crossed. The current color scheme in the Haven rooms on Jewel are just too vibrant for my taste. I imagine it helps disguise wear though. It won't stop me from enjoying myself :-)

Elisa, it has been a few years since we board the Pearl in Los Angeles but I am assuming it will be the same as before. The Check in for Suites was to the right then to the far right was a blocked off area with the table where the Concierge and other check in people were. Then a table of refreshments. It was very close to the escalators. Like in all the other ports our Butler came over and introduced himself and then escorted us on the ship. Granted the set up was not nearly as nice as other ports for the Suite Passengers but we were not there that long.

For many years i did a live from, our last two cruises I skipped doing it. I may do a live from with pictures. We are very much looking forward to this cruise because we have done this itinerary so many times on HAL and looking forward to doing it NCL Style :D

Thanks Lisa! It's been a loooonnnnggg time since we took an NCL cruise and I barely remember the terminal and we weren't in a suite, although we did have a lovely balcony cabin on the Sky -- which was pretty new at the time.

We have a about a 2 hour drive to the port, and this is the first time it will be the whole family. I'm envisioning a little bit of chaos as a result. Getting up early, excitement, and more talking than listening.

It doesn't sound like most people have to wait very long to board, so it's not very important to have a fancy lounge in the terminal.

I haven't had time to put all my pics in order or in photo-bucket but here are some pics we just took last week on the Pearl. The Jewel set up is the same but not sure about carpeting as I tend to be a bit forgetful.:o When we first started cruising b&l were served in Cagneys on this side overlooking the pool. Then they decided to seat everyone over on the other side which DH and I didn't really care for as we missed overlooking the pool area and watching people walk/jog by. Plus it has the huge windows that let in a lot more light which is helpful for him as he has very little vision. Then they moved Moderno's which was across from Blue Lagoon (now O'Sheehans) and put that where b&l were served. DH and I are happy again.:)

As you get off the elevator on deck 13 you go to the right and that's where the host will be standing at the desk. Cagney's is on the right and Moderno is to the left. (Leah is the one waving and she was an excellent concierge - a bit blurry which means I probably took it although DH has horrible vision he still takes better pics than I do).

The menu looks really good -- I've seen it posted and looks like a number of options will be on my list. I'm going to want bagels and lox one morning, and I don't think I saw that on the menu, so may ask for that as in room delivery at some point. I've read that the butler is able to really get you anything you want as long as it's on the ship. The decadence of it is almost too much for me, lol

Lox (smoked salmon ) is out on the buffet, and just tell your waiter you want a bagel. No need for room service...unless that's your preference.

At least one morning we will order in since we have the butler, so I'll ask for it then. We may do the buffet outdoors one morning, and a lunch or two, as I love eating outside if the weather is nice. We have always done the buffet a lot on our previous cruises --kind of looking forward to enjoying the free room service, and our cabin has a table for four or we can get it in the courtyard. Not sure what kind of weather we will get, as it is an early January sailing, and it's looking like we may have a major El Nino this year. We never get room service in hotels because its so crazy expensive, so I'm taking advantage of it at least a little while in a Haven suite. :)

I am going to be doing a trip report, but it will be a few days before I get started and I will be extremely slow going. I will post a zillion pictures though as I go.
