Question about bringing cash

Hi All,

I'm sailing on the breeze next month and I have a question about carrying cash. My fiancee and I were thinking about carrying around 200.00 each in cash, but I feel like that wouldn't be too safe.

My question is, how much cash do you usually carry on a cruise, if any and do you usually feel comfortable leaving money in the room safe?

there are way too many variables. why not tell us what you planned on doing with the cash (tips, excursions, souvenirs etc) and we can better tell you how much

We have left much more than that in the safe and not only felt safe, but never had had a problem. You can always retract money from a card or cash travelers checks at guest services if you do not feel right.

I typically carry 200 to 500 bucks just encase I find something I can't go home without! I will say I get a bad vibes in Nassau, and if I leave the ship I leave the money and all but one credit card in the safe! I have never had issues, I just don't trust Nassau! Everywhere else I have been ok, with a few exceptions of vendors trying to swindle me on change... the moral to that is carry small bills! In progresso, I ordered two Carona's from the bar at the end of the pier.... I only had a 50 and the bartender avoided giving me my change and tried to scam me for 10 minutes.... I finally had to walk behind the bar to get his attention which he avoided until I was standing behind him demanding my 43 dollars in change! Thank god for good people witnessing him attempting to rip me off. We was still denying he did anything wrong!

A lot of independent shore excursion operators require you to pay in cash upon arrival for tour. Because of this it can increase my cash amounts dramatically above minor amounts for additional tips, taxis, gift purchases etc. $200 wouldn't put a dent in some cruises I have gone on. I use the in room safe and never had a problem.

Not sure why you'd feel unsafe putting cash into a safe?

That's what the safe is for. DH brings several hundred $$s just to have and we have always left it in the safe without a worry or problem.

I'm just naturally paranoid about things like that, and I've never used the safes before.

The safes are fine. I can't remember if the Breeze has the keypad or swipe card type. If it has a keypad, you will set your own password to lock & unlock. If it has the card swipe, you will use any card with a magnetic strip EXCEPT your room key. I take an old gift card or airline card and use that. Never have had a problem leaving cash or valuables in the safe.

You will love the Breeze!! Enjoy your cruise!

We have never had a problem taking and storing in the safe large amounts of cash.

I gamble and don't use anything but cash. It is not uncommon for me to have several thousand dollars on a cruise. I surely am not going to walk around with that kind of cash on my person.

OP, this what we do. We figure out how many $1s $5s $10s and $20s we will need. You will need some cash for the luggage porter when you arrive at the port. We give $2,00 per bag. I have this out and ready. Don't pull out a big envelope with money showing. On board I like to give the cabin steward a little something and if I order room service I give them a tip. This is where the $1s $5s are used. Casino I use $20s. I budget myself how much to spend. When I go off the ship I take enough cash for lunch. purchases and if a tour a tip. I don't use my credit card. I always take a credit card with me, no debit card. CC just for Diamond Int and Effy stuff. I carry my cash in different pockets and use money clips. Don't pull out a big roll and pull off a 5 or 10 to buy a t shirt. Have I gone off the deep end with this?. Remember the luggage porters they work hard and they can "loose your bag". A good gauge is $75 to $100 per day LOL ;)

So what would a reasonable amount of cash be to take vs using plastic as much as possible. Say for my cruise in April. dont really plan on doing much in Roatan Island except one of those all inclusive beaches. sit on the beach and veg.

Belize we plan on doing the cave tubing through cavetubing.bz

Cozumel were looking at doing some shopping in Playa del carmen down 5th ave. cant buy to much as we have to take back with us on the plan.

Grand cayman were doing the stingray city and turtle farm then spending the rest of the day at 7 mile beach vegging.

You will LOVE the cave tubing in Belize. Consider snorkeling in Roatan, right off the beach. Best snorkeling we've ever done!. Stingray city and the Turtle farm are really cool, too.

I don't want to hijack the thread but that's what I've been researching for Roatan is a beach that's is great for sitting on a beautiful beach, all inclusive beach resort AND great snorkeling. I like to snorkel but my wife doesn't care for it. Just don't know were to go or who has the best beach and snorkel place.

We did zipline and tabayna beach break, but you can do the beach by itself thru carnival. They have buses going back to ship about every half hour. The beach is gorgeous, snorkeling right there. It's not all inclusive, but we had our own server we settled up with when we left. They also had a chicken and beans dish that was wonderful.

We take all cash on cruises. I plan for everything: meals before and after, tips, taxi rides, gambling, souvenirs, drinks on island, etc etc. I plan on how many $1, $5, $10, $20 etc I will need. Yup, I have a great wad of cash and put it in the safe as soon as on ship. (Broken down in envelopes to keep track of) before cruise I keep a VERY watchful eye on it, in my purse, and it doesn't leave my sight. DH thinks I'm A nut, but it works.

Thank you, I will check it out. Doesn't have to be all inclusive as long as it has food and drinks available at the beach. Bucket of ice cold Corona and I'm good. Snorkel equip rental?

On me, I'll usually have $100 +/- while on shore. On board I'll have maybe $20 in singles at any given time for tipping my favorite bartenders.

I don't use credit cards and will not use a debit card on a cruise. As far as how much I bring aboard at the beginning, well I'm not telling but given the use of FTTF it will go directly in my safe upon embarkation.

Yes, don't know the cost. We had our own. Only time I've ever seen a big old lobster while snorkeling. I forgot to mention they have lounge chairs set up there also.

I go island by island and research what we want to do and what it will cost. I add a little extra and put each day in a separate envelope. I don't want to charge anything on the islands...exchange rates and all if they charge their currency. Last trip we took about $1000 for 7 days but we had 5 ports. We paid cash for everything off the ship except for our pre-cruise hotel.
