Saving seats for the shows?

It is my understanding that you are not supposed to save seats for the shows. I THINK on HAL you could save 1 seat, but no more. I think it would be rude for 1 person to try to save 6 seats for the shows, but maybe it is permitted.

I'd like to know what the "rule" is, and also what the "reality" is on Princess.

For example, I would not challenge someone saving a single seat, even if it is "against the rules". There are 4 of us travelling together - I presume it would be against the rules, as well as impolite, for 1 of us to try to save 3 seats. Can we 2 guys go in a save seats for our spice (or whatever the plural of spouse is ;)) while they go freshen up?

I see you will be on the Caribbean Princess -- you will need to get to the lounges/theatres early to get a seat for most performances. As for saving, I have seen someone sitting with more than one seat being saved by a wrap or purse on it. Is that against the rules? I don't know, but it is done all the time.

I think the rule is meant for those saving multiple seats when the supposed occupants may or may not make it to the performance.

On the CB there were 6 folks sitting in front of us. Two of the ladies had to go to the rest room, and the rest saved their seats. Well, one lady came in and wanted those seats and made such a fuss...it was ridiculous. No matter how they tried to explain that the ladies were in the rest room, she continued to harangue. She finally gave up, but not before making an utter fool of herself. I don't think it's fair to save a whole row of seats for your friends...they are probably in the casino. But there are exceptions when saving a couple of seats.

Unfortunately, common sense isn't as common as it should be. I think it's fine to save a seat for someone who has stopped by the restroom right before you enter the theater. It's not OK to save seats for people who don't arrive with you. In those cases, it's better to arrange to meet ahead of time so you can all arrive together. A lot of times, people try to save seats for others who never show up. It's not just rude, it's also against the posted policy.

It is, and should be, perfectly acceptable to hold a seat (or two) for others who have stopped on the way in to go to the WC, as Michael said.

We used to cruise often with another couple and the wife (a very attractive woman and at the time, in her early 50s) had alzheimers and could become disoriented very easily so one of us ladies would always accompany her to the WC to make sure she was OK and to lead her where she was supposed to be. Sometimes, she took a long time to remember why she was even in the WC or to figure out how to get out of the stall. Her husband and the others would go ahead and get seats for us. It was amazing how many dirty looks we'd get for coming in "late" to the held seats. Not everything is as it appears since she looked and acted pretty normal except for the confusion. Sad to say, she's not doing well now. :(

One or two seats, for 5 minutes such as for someone who is stopping by the restroom, fine. One or more seats for more than 10 minutes, as in for spices still getting ready, not fine. There is a difference between a seat having already been taken and one that has been saved for future occupancy.

Whilst waiting for a show once, a woman tried to save the entire row in front of us!  It was the "pre game" show to all around us. You should have seen the looks and heard the comments! Well, one couple completely ignored her and sat right in the middle of the row! ;) She tried in vain to get them to move. They just continued to ignore her. As her extended family trickled in, they sat around the couple with no problem. When the show actually started - there was no seat available for the original lady!! It was hilarious!!! :D There were cheers all around!

Thanks for the input. It sounds like there is general agreement, and a few minor judgement calls, as one would expect. I assume the official policy on Princess is No Saving Theater Seats, just like for deck chairs, but it is OK within reason.

There may be rude folks from time to time, but hey, that why God gave us Silly String. :)

Sometimes people "save" seats just to prevent anyone sitting next to them.

We decided at the last minute to go to a show and found very few seats available. I spotted two together towards the middle of a row and made our way toward them. As we were about to sit down, the lady next to me said very caustically, "We were saving those seats!" I thanked her and said I appreciated her saving them for us, otherwise we might not have been able to get a seat. The show started immediately, so I never got to hear her response. :D

But I bet you could come up with a few good guesses.
