Casino smoke

I admit to liking the casino however lately I spend less and less time because of the smoke. We go down early am as its pretty smoke free and if there is a smoke free time we utilize that. However even if one area is smoke free it drifts over and we eventually leave.

I figure the premier and cruise selects just might have to many smokers so we keep trying to use casino discounts.

Not asking smokers to quit but has any cruise line ever considered two different Casino rooms on board in different areas of ship one being smoke free?

It was terrible on the Fantasy last week. Not sure what it is about the casino that makes people chain smoke. I noticed many people would light up a new cigarette the very minute they put one out. If they did that at home, they'd smoke 5 packs a day.

They have ventilation. It can't keep up. And it's not like they can completely re-do the system. Ships do have restricted space.

Not sure what the answer is.

What I don't understand is why they can't figure out a way to AT LEAST somewhat segregate the areas. Why not put the non-smoking slots along the side of the non-smoking tables? Instead, they have banks of non-smoking that are surrounded by smoking.

Or they're next to the smoking end of the bar, where every smoker who isn't out on deck is sitting. What's the point in that?

And then there are the people who just stroll through the casino while smoking. Or stand and watch behind a non-smoking table. I said something to a woman who was standing behind me watching the Roulette table and her response was "if you don't like smoke, stay out of the casino." Why, thanks for your consideration. And you wonder why non-smokers get upset.

It's ridiculous, really.

While I don't follow John Heald, I do think that if people were much more vocal about this TO HIM, maybe, possibly, a little attention might be paid to the situation.

But I doubt it. People with one addiction often have others and this seems to be the case with a lot of gamblers. And the casino loves people with no self-control! ;)

This would be my one and only complaint about the Magic 2 weeks ago as well. And it seemed we had to walk through the casino in order to reach other arts of the ship. That might be incorrect, but we never found an alternate route.

As we would start to walk through it wouldn't be so bad, but within paces, we would have to cover our noses and mouths and move very quickly. I feel for the workers in that area - secondhand smoke related illnesses are very real.

Smoking in Casinos, specifically on cruise ships is bad for multiple reasons. First off they will never go completely smokeless, the vice's of gambling, drinking, and smoking are all grouped together unfortunately. Take a look at Revel in Atlantic City, they opened "smoke free" but had to abandon that policy due to a lack of profit, simply said a lot of gamblers like to smoke while playing. Another issue is the casino is one of the few places on board where smoking is allowed, so you get people in there who aren't even gambling but are simply coming in to smoke. Lastly the reason the smoke is worse on ships than land based casinos is the size, notice when your in AC/Vegas/etc. that the ceilings are high up which allows the smoke to rise up and away from the tables, on ships due to size restrictions the ceilings are low hence the cloud of smoke effect.

I just quit smoking a couple of months ago, but I've been a smoker for years (never a heavy smoker, but still...). I will say that if you are a smoker, you do tend to smoke much more when in a casino. I'm not sure why that is - I'm thinking that it has something to do with the rush people get when gambling - it goes well with smoking.

I will be sailing in two weeks, and I can't say that I will refrain from smoking when in the casino - I'll just have to see how it works out.

BUT - I will say that one of the reasons you have so many smokers in the casino & at the casino bar is because there are few other places that you can smoke. I do think that they should do a better job of segregating the smokers - I have yet to figure out how they come up with their plan. Let's see, we'll put a row of non-smoking machines here - and what the heck, let's put smoking machines on the next row. Doesn't make sense.

I also think that smokers could be a little nicer - like, I never light a cigarette if I'm sitting at a machine next to someone who isn't smoking - even if it is in a smoking area. Then again, you non-smokers can also be a little nicer - if I'm smoking a cigarette and you decide to sit at the machine next to me, how about you don't make a huge production of putting your hand over your nose, coughing, etc. Just don't sit by me. If you're acting like a jerk about it when you chose to sit there & it is a smoking machine, I'm probably not going to put my cigarette out - just saying.

We were on the Glory, Oct 10-17, and I can tell you, that Carnival did add 3 or 4 smoke-eaters in the casino. My GF and I are smokers, and it wasnt as smoky in there, so I think the smoke-eaters were doing a good job.But I will also say, that the casino was packed every night, and every sea day..and there were a lot of people smoking in there.

LOL....so why would someone who thinks of these as "vices" want to be in the casino, anyway.

Non-smokers have pushed and prodded and pulled smokers from every other corner of the ship....didn't they think this through when they decided they wanted smokers segregated.

Just got off the Glory 10/31/15 the smoke was terrible around the casino bar. There was this guy that I know he has heart problems and is still puffing away I do not know the rationality but I have never, never smoked not one puff so I probably do not understand. A nurse told me one time we are same but we are all different.

We had a similar problem on Pride two weeks ago. My wife and I were prepared to hunker down and play, but the smokers did not pay attention to the no-smoking sign and it wasn't our job to police that. We would do small spurts, but eventually we grew tired of our clothes and hair smelling like nicotine and our lungs were beginning to revolt. What makes it worse is that it is a main walkway between the dining room and theater, so there are few direct ways to avoid it.

FWIW--I'm not a proponent of CCL banning smoking in the casinos because it keeps my cruise costs low and my poor brother has to be able to smoke somewhere other than the "ourdoor areas"; however, it'd be nice if there was an entirely different area for non-smokers, even if it was much smaller.

If Carnival made it a priority this problem would go away. A better filtration system (able to handle more volume) along with additional ventilation set close together at the top of each table, slot machine, etc. would eliminate the problem. it would require an investment, a well thought-out design and a bit more power consumption, but it can be done.

When we still smoked (quit 5 years ago) we often hung out in the casino even when not gambling because it was one of the few (sometimes only) indoor space where smoking was allowed.

Now we spend almost no time in the casinos on Carnival as the smell is all around. But when on Celebrity we do spend time there as they banned ALL indoor smoking years ago, its wonderful!

Years ago CCL did have a non smoking ship but according to the beards it was the least profitable ship in the fleet so it went back to smoking they put profits over people's health.

A lot of interesting comments. Haven't tried Celebrity but might try them after our currently booked cruises are done.

Also I hope Norwegians idea pans out and others follow.

I know the smoking ban has made the situation worse I am just hoping someone will come up with a solution for the non smokers. Definatly better filters or more seperation between the machines...

I am glad Norwegian is trying something...Carnival may have tried smokeless in the pass but I can't believe they can't come up with better filters or something.

I was on the Conquest in August, the smoke was bad. I think the smoking in the casino has gotten out of hand.

I witnessed multiple times during our week of people smoking, lighting up on the promenade before they reach the casino bar and/or the casino. One gentleman smoking (lighting up) at the taste bar.

I think eventually smoking will be stopped in all indoor venues. It's that way every where you go now. This is just my opinion!

I don't mind so much the smoke in the casino, I hardly gamble. It is annoying though that the majority of trivia is right outside of the casino with a ton of smoke. I love the trivia but, I have asthma and half the time I have to leave to use my inhalers. I wish they would move the trivia elsewhere. I try to avoid that deck and when I have to go from front to back I usually go to lido.

I am not a smoker but I think this is a "be careful what you wish for" situation. Everyone moaning about smoking on balconies and certain lounges resulted in taking away almost all the inside areas for smokers to smoke. Now the smokers are flocking to one of the ONLY places to smoke that is out of the wind and cold.

Now everyone wants that taken away. Then they complain that Carnival is only looking for profits...of course they are! It is a business!

Not everyone, just the ardent non smokers who seem to believe everyone should change or sacrifice except them. I hear it a lot. I cant go in the casino, I cant be on my balcony, I cant do this I cant do that. Nothing makes them happy, no compromise is enough.

Of course, I remember when smoking was everywhere, even airplanes. Amazingly, there weren't a lot of people walking around waving their hands or whining about the smell.

I don't know if any cruise line has considered two separate rooms. I was recently on Oasis of the Seas and in their casino one side is smoking the other is non-smoking. I never smelled or saw smoke on the non-smoking side. The only times I smelled it was at the casino bar which is in the middle.

Celebrity's casinos are smoke free. Somehow they manage to stay in business.

And here come the always-defensive smokers.

No one chased you out of anywhere. In case no one has noticed, a lot of things have changed over the years. The fact that smokers are willing to waste so much money and jeopardize their health is their business. It isn't their business to impose their poor health decisions on those who choose to not smoke.

It's really very simple.

Yes, improved air filtration and circulation would help, as already noted. But, also as already noted, an improvement with their locations of the smoking and non-smoking areas in the casino would also help.

And here's an idea! Actually ENFORCE THE RULES about smoking in the casino! I know! What a concept!!!

No, it isn't my job to enforce the rules, but, please! When you're breaking them and someone politely asks you to stop, don't get all obnoxious and defensive and start puffing even more just to be a jerk about it!

Sounding more and more like Celebrity may be my cruiseline of choice after I take my 25th Milestone.
