Is the Lobster in MDR really good?

So, on our past cruises when lobster was included it was those little itty bitty tails that were okay, but nothing I'd really look for. When we were in our one and only Haven experience there was no lobster available at all.

Now there is that pesky upcharge you can pay in the MDR so my question is, for those who have tried it, is it good enough to warrant the price?

Is it now the same as you could get in a specialty? (Was that Cagney's?) If it's the same, what would be the cost difference between eating it in the MDR and just going to the specialty?

And would they take it out of the shell?

I am ordering it tonight. Will let you know!

Was grocery shopping earlier, walked by the seafood dept. with the live tanks, fresh New England/Maine lobster at $8.99 a pound. Super easy DIY - stream it or broil, ready to chow in 30 minutes. Prefer the 2 to 2.5 lbs. ones with big chunks of meat - yummy (not to mention when soft shells are in season, OMG)

Our of favorite & popular seafood restaurant nearby - on the waterfront (City Island with boat docking) do a lobster clam bake for $28.99, it's a full meal with house salad, garlic bread, choice of potatoes/rice/pasta - no choice on dessert: ice cream cake roll only. Beverages not included - plus sales tax & gratuity/tipping is at our discretion and mandatory only for large party of 6 or more. Leftovers are wrapped & packed free to go, cheerfully - extra bread at no charge on request.

It's not necessary for us to cruise for lobsters, especially not with upcharge.

We used to get lobster dinners here way back in the day (late 80's?) for 9.99 that were great and my new DH would take the meat out for me...

Not anymore on both fronts, lol.

But I am also interested to know if it's the same as in the specialty restaurant...

I usially get lobster in our grocery store. They steam it for you for free, and the price ranges anywhere from $4.99 per pound to $12.99 per pound for Maine lobster, depending on the season. Anyway, I wanted to order the lobster in the MDR just to see how it was. I ordered the steak frites which was complimentary, and paid $19.99 plus gratuity for the lobster. It was served halfed and cleaned. The claws were removed, and the claw meat was inside the cleaned out head area. It was ok. IMO, it is more flavorful from my grocery store. It was cooked nicely though. The tail was slightly mushy, but really, nothing to complain about. I persoanlly wouldnt order it again, and to me, it didnt seem like it was anywhere near a 1.5 pound lobster, but that could be because the claws were already removed.

Thanks for your input. Maybe I will get something complimentary and get the lobster to share.

I prefer to get lobster in the ports fresh out of the ocean for great prices. I have only experienced small lobsters on cruises that were a bit rubbery due to improper cooking so I have never got one again.

Did they charge you 18% of the upcharge, or just the upcharge straight up?

Thanks for the update. I was going to use this as leverage to get some friends to cruise on NCL, but since it is just okay, I'll scratch this off my list.

Could you explain what the steak frites were. There was a discussion on this and folks were saying it was different things. Just curious.

That sounds exactly like the surf 'n turf lobster in Cagney's (only half instead of whole.) It's a half a Maine lobster (like the whole one has been sliced in half down the middle), with the claws removed and the claw meat inside the head area. Just like you described.

In case she doesn't come back quickly, steak frites is a steak and french fries.

The lobster isn't going to be recently caught (strike one), and it's going to be prepared in a non-specialty kitchen (strike two).

I have a feeling that if a person hadn't had lobster before it might pass muster, but for anyone who has had lobster properly prepared before, I wouldn't like the odds.

Ok, I'm slightly amused that people are still debating what the dish "steak frites" is when all you have to do is type the words into your web browser and look at the picture.

Yes it would be easier if they just listened to a person who comes from a country with both French and English as the official languages. Not to mention that it's a staple dish in French restaurants.

J'ai essayer....

Yes, it's steak and fries. It was around 8 - 9 ounces (I'm guessing) strip steak, served with herb butter, fries, and a grilled tomato. It was very good. I had it again tonight (just the steak - no lobster).
