Will be cruising the Norwegian Getaway next week. Our first time in Cozumel. I'm waiting authentic Mexican food. Where's the best place within "safe walking" distance from port?? Directions would be fabulous as well. Have a great day!!

If you are docking at the international port, there are a few touristy places at the cruise port. Carnival and most of the larger ships dock here. There are a couple of other ports closer to town.

I would recommend taking a taxi to the town, San Miguel, where you'll find restaurants and cantinas everywhere. It will cost about $10 US to get there, but there isn't much to see at the cruise port or within walking distance of the port, although it is a very nice port. There are taxis all over near the port parking lot. Most taxis charge about the same for up to 4 people. Just agree on the price in advance.

Cozumel is very safe. You don't need to worry about walking around the town and checking out the shops.

Directly across from the International Pier is a blue taco truck. Great street food. Exit the pier gates, turn right and go about a 1/4 mile to Puerta Maya. enter the complex and turn right to the Cinco Soles Outlet. There's an outlet for Pancho's BackYard with a patio that looks out on the cruise piers and channel. Caters a bit to tourista tastes, but good margaritas and chile rellenos.

As John suggested, take a taxi to the down town Plaza. Walk directly across the plaza, avoiding the vendors, and straight ahead, you'll see Casa Denis, the oldest restaurant on the island, serving Yucatan dishes.

La Coza is another place to try for local aurthentic dishes without hunting down loncherias and economica comidas. Been around fro nearly 20 years. A taxi can get you there. It's on Avendia 10 (2nd block back from waterfront) between Calle Rosada Salas and Calle 3 Sur. Calle Salas is 4th street, blocks up, from the Punta Langosta pier(downtown). You turn right go 3 blocks to Avenida 15, turn right again, go 1 block to Avenida 10 and it's in the middle of the block on your left. One way streets make you do a circle.

At the corner of the waterfront and Calle Rosada Sales is La Mission, very good, but similar to Pancho's in serving items a tad more tourist oriented. Its sister restaurant is La Mission, with outstanding dishes, but only open for dinner.

If you dock at Punta Langosta I recommend walking into town to Casa Cuzamil and get one of their comida del dias. So good, and like 70 pesos for the full meal! Then continue the walk to Zermatt's bakery for a little snack!

It would be a very long walk from Puerta Maya or the International Pier; but a cab is cheap.

You are scheduled to dock in town at Punta Langosta. I agree lots of local eating places within walking distance. Quite safe to walk around San Miguel with normal precautions and awareness.

Here is a list to get you started for further research although times change so not completely up to date, restaurants open and others close regularly but many are established family owned places.

Check out reviews on Tripadvisor.

Our favorite is La Choza, recommended by Crew above.
