BND Posted November 21, 2015 #3 Share Posted November 21, 2015 Did the Captain announce that there were 4 critically ill patients? If they're critical why haven't they been evacuated? I believe there are 4 ill patients, but critically ill?
DPurcell58 Posted November 21, 2015 #4 Share Posted November 21, 2015 First, if you were the sick passenger, you would be grateful that they are trying to get you to a hospital. Second, the passengers can't get off the Anthem until tomorrow morning, so they are still getting the same service as if they were out at sea tonight. Charleyann Posted November 21, 2015 Author #5 Share Posted November 21, 2015 The captain reported critical .....I quoted " Not one critical but 4 critically ill passengers " ...He furthered thanked us and stated " please understand if this was your family members ".... All stores , casino will be closed ...... Not sure why helicopter wasn't call. Maybe because there are 4 ? No idea what is wrong with them... Charleyann Posted November 21, 2015 Author #7 Share Posted November 21, 2015 (edited) Someone just asked me how I knew , it was because the captain announced that this Was a major disruption to the cruise and activity schedule , etc and then said , they had not one but 4 critical passengers that needed urgent care in Hospital And pleaded for understating .. So prayers for the passengers Edited November 21, 2015 by Charleyann
Rclplatnm Posted November 21, 2015 #8 Share Posted November 21, 2015 Sad to hear. I'm boarding the Anthem tomorrow. Hope to have a nice trip.
DPurcell58 Posted November 21, 2015 #9 Share Posted November 21, 2015 They can't get off because immigration isn't there and ready and also they get to enjoy the last hours they paid for on the cruise. Also, what if you have a flight booked for tomorrow, where would you go?
dixieva Posted November 21, 2015 #10 Share Posted November 21, 2015 Because the port will not be ready to disembark passengers until tomorrow morning when there will be customs officials and porters.

So prayers for the passengers I'm just really surprised they didn't stop somewhere like Grandeur did in Norfolk day before yesterday to offload a sick passenger (they also had 4 events happen on their trip) or chopper them off if they're that bad. I don't get why someone would be pissed off. That's a pretty crappy comment. I told DH between Anthem and Grandeur I'm guessing at this time of year when kids are mostly in school, that the demographics are older. Our experience on November cruises is that the average age is a lot older, but the most we've ever had that we're aware of is one airlift on a couple of trips. richiab Posted November 21, 2015 #12 Share Posted November 21, 2015 That's really sad, but what are the chances of getting 4 critically ill at the same time? They could have gotten closer to a port and a helicopter could take them off. Even if only one at a time. Seems like there is more to the story that RCCL is not divulging. I'm not saying they have to, just that there has to be a reason. Of course it could be a coincindence. I wish them all a quick recovery.
chengkp75 Posted November 21, 2015 #13 Share Posted November 21, 2015 Two reasons they may not be evacuated by helicopter. One, they are out of range, which is true today, but later on they could be in range. Two, both the ship's doctor and the USCG flight surgeon feel that the stress of being hoisted to a helicopter, and the amount of flight time without critical care equipment would be more detrimental to the patients health than keeping them in the medical facility on the ship. It is the same with all medical emergencies at sea, you have to weigh the risks against the rewards.

There are a lot of elderly passengers aboard . I just overheard a manager saying one passenger is a child 😒. Prayers to them and their families! Life is Good Cruising Posted November 21, 2015 #15 Share Posted November 21, 2015 Any ideas as to why stores and the casino would be closing early? Could these 4 people have an illness that is contagious? Thoughts and prayers go out to them for a speedy recovery.
yogimax Posted November 21, 2015 #16 Share Posted November 21, 2015 My guess is that this sailing has an unusually high percentage of the elderly

A hoist is a fairly complicated evolution with a significant amount of risk. Depending on the situation, helicopter evacuation is likely not the best option.
