scluvsrain Posted December 24, 2015 #1 Share Posted December 24, 2015 Will be in Punta Arenas in early February. I'm interested in doing a city tour, but wondered if I can just walk from the Plaza to the cemetery and/or some of the museums? Or is an organized tour the better option? jtslattery Posted December 25, 2015 #2 Share Posted December 25, 2015 Would be hike. Taxi took 10+ minutes. Cabs inexpensive and easy. Just take a map and point to where you want to go. There is a taxi stand at cemetery for return. Several museums within walking distance of square.

donaldsc Posted December 25, 2015 #4 Share Posted December 25, 2015 According to Google Maps, it is 0.9 miles if I have the right places. You can find out walking and public transit options for almost any city in Google Maps. DON
avcruz Posted January 1, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 1, 2016 I walked from the ship to the plaza and then to the cemetery. The distance from the plaza to the cemetery was only about 2km, but it was up an incline. It took me about 40-45 mins.
Rare Keith1010 Posted January 1, 2016 #6 Share Posted January 1, 2016 We too just walked from where we were docked over to the cemetery and walked the rest of the town. Very easy. Keith
4774Papa Posted January 1, 2016 #7 Share Posted January 1, 2016 I suggest taking a tour from Punta Arenas. We had some free time in the town after our tour to see Penguins. There is not so much to see in the town.
Hoyasaxa90 Posted January 19, 2016 #8 Share Posted January 19, 2016 It's about 35 minute walk. Not bad, we did it with a 3 year old in tow. Just monitor the weather conditions so you don't get stranded at the port until midnight because the port is closed and they can't run tenders back to the ship. scluvsrain Posted January 19, 2016 Author #9 Share Posted January 19, 2016 Whoa. What happens when they can't run tenders and there are still legitimate passengers stranded? The ship won't leave them will it? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
peterscot Posted January 20, 2016 #10 Share Posted January 20, 2016 Hi, You need to ask your ship what they do if passengers stranded. By the way, there's two excellent outdoor museums about 4km out from the centre on the airport riad. One has replicas of famous ships, like the Beagle, James Caird and Magellan's ship. The other has examples of buildings from the early days of the region, ie 1900s. You can hire bikes and cycle the flat seafront to both. There is a Winnebago type van parked on the seafront, Amazing Patagonia Tours, I think.

The leisure walk takes about 25 minutes. just follow the people as you exit the terminal facility. Take Avenida Bories until you see the "white wall." The cemetery is not as grandoise as the Recoleta in Rio. Anyway, in your walk you'll pass by Plaza de Armas, the parque national, Sara Braun museum, the catedral, and a historical museum ($5.00 entrance fee per person). Due to weather conditions, the port master closed the port on that day. Like refugees, we were stranded along with 1700 cruisers and 80 crew members and didn't get on board 'til 1230am. What an experience alright!

X1HYCB Posted January 24, 2016 #14 Share Posted January 24, 2016 Wow, does this happen often??? Yikes! Yep, - especially if you go by tender. The master of the vessel (M/V) had to send in foods, blankets and chairs. It was windy and brrry cold. The terminal facility is like a small warehouse, has four or five benches, no heat, no insulation - just imagine how these people dealt with it.
