Extension cord question

We have a Belkin mini power strip that we take with us. But I've been debating about getting one of these (or something similar):

http://www.amazon.com/Perfect-Life-Ideas-Industrial-Contractor/dp/B01AQDUSGG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453227886&sr=8-1&keywords=short+heavy+duty+multi+tap+extension+cord

I was just wondering if anyone else has ever taken one of these types of extension cord, and whether or not it got confiscated. Thanks.

That extension cord should be just fine, not only does it not have a surge suppressor (like your Belkin), but it is not of the "lamp cord" light duty type.

Your Belkin has a surge suppressor, which is what is prohibited in power strips, and even though they frequently get by because they don't look like a power strip on x-ray, they can cause serious damage after repeated uses onboard.

Here is a thread that explains why surge suppressors fail over time when used onboard ships:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2271143

and here is the USCG Safety Notice about using surge suppressors onboard ships:

This is the first I've heard of this, glad I checked the thread.

So, from what I"m reading, something like this, which i was planning on bringing is no good

http://www.amazon.com/Socket-SS1650W-06-6-Outlet-Expandable-Protector/dp/B0017RXJSK

while something like this (because it does not have surge protection) is ok?

http://www.homedepot.com/p/4-ft-6-Outlet-Power-Strip-with-45-Angle-Plug-YLPT-2-1B/203353677

Am I reading that right? Sorry if this sounds ignorant, my skills with electricity are just about none.

Yes, second item is acceptable, while first is not.

Anyone know of the name (or seen the listing) of the round circle one that is usually listed on Amazon that's not surge protected? I seen someone show a picture of it on one of the other sites a long time ago and I can no longer find it. I tried searching Amazon and must not be putting in the right name for it because what I'm looking for doesn't come up.

I need to get one of these because I never had any idea that you couldn't bring a power strip with surge protection. I have done that in the past and never got sent to the naughty room or it taken, but I want to make sure I have the right thing and not risking any electrical issues.

Thanks in advance. :)

This is news to me also because I just read on CCL yesterday, that if you bring an extension cord, IT MUST have a surge protector.. Guess this is another question for John...I will go find what I rad and see if I read it wrong first..

I just went and looked again, and it is there in red letters, NO SURGE PROTECTORS.. I am still looking for what I saw yesterday though so I can make sure they changed it also...

no need for John... no need to guess.

here it is right from Carnival Site

ELECTRIC OUTLETS

There is one electric outlet in each stateroom located in the area of the desk/vanity.

The outlet is equipped with a 3-prong 110 volt (North America Grounded) and a 220 volt (Europe German-Style).

The outlet in the bathroom can only be used for electric razors.

Power strips, multi plug box outlets/adaptors and extension cords (without surge protectors) are allowed on board when used with proper caution. However, if such devices are determined to pose a hazard, they will be removed and returned the last day of the cruise prior to debark.

John has already discussed this before and confirmed that you must have NO surge protectors. It has came up a few times and he addressed it on his page. That's how I originally found out about it. :)

It is a relatively new rule because of a fire caused by a surge protector on a non-cruise ship with a similar electrical system.

I probably wouldn't like the fact that it lights up. Otherwise you shouldn't have any issues.

not sure how new... I believe its been around for at least a few years

This may not be what you're looking for, but it doesn't have a surge protector:

http://www.amazon.com/Monster-MP-OTG400-BK-Outlets/dp/B000F9YN2M/ref=sr_1_72?ie=UTF8&qid=1453249337&sr=8-72&keywords=power+strip

Then there's this funny looking thing:

http://www.amazon.com/Accell-D080B-007K-R-PowerSquid-Multiplier-outlets/dp/B004LZ5XMU/ref=sr_1_32?ie=UTF8&qid=1453249567&sr=8-32&keywords=power+strip

This one flexes into a circle, but it has a surge protector:

http://www.amazon.com/Quirky-PVP-1-WHT-Outlet-Flexible-Protector/dp/B004ZP74UK/ref=sr_1_37?ie=UTF8&qid=1453249777&sr=8-37&keywords=power+strip

Then there's this one, similar to the one above, without a surge protector. You have your choice of four different colors:

http://www.amazon.com/Quirky-PPVPP-PK01-Pivot-Power-Pink/dp/B002YU25NY/ref=sr_1_105?ie=UTF8&qid=1453250029&sr=8-105&keywords=power+strip

This one is round, but it also has a surge protector:

http://www.amazon.com/Power-Strip-Lanshion-5-Outlet-Protector/dp/B016VRH0BW/ref=sr_1_59?ie=UTF8&qid=1453249886&sr=8-59&keywords=power+strip

I'm sure the first two aren't what you're looking for, but I thought I'd include them anyway. Personally, I like the Monster power strip, and since Carnival no longer allows surge protectors, I may just get one of those. They're cheaper at Walmart than on Amazon.

Thanks for all the links. Nope, none of those are what I was looking for, but if I can't find them, some of them look interesting enough for me. :D

Did it have regular plugs, USB ports, or a combination of both?

I think "Overload protection" = surge protection but I could be wrong. chengkp75 are they the same?

Yea, that could be. I didn't look at the description, just what the device looked at. Before when I found it, I did find that they come in both surge protection and "not". So the particular one that I posted might not be the actual one. I just wanted to show the shape I was looking for. :p Oops, sorry for the confusion.

No problem. I didn't see one without that option. But if they do make one like that, the price is right and it looks awesome. I might opt for a USB one since it seems everything uses one of those anyway.

I used this one on my last trip. I liked that it has both the plugs and the USB ports. It is also available at Walmart.

http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-3-Outlet-Charger-Protector-Charging/dp/B0015DYMVO

It does say surge protected on it but I didn't have a problem. Maybe I got lucky.

Ok, after searching all the listings at "my" UFO that I want, I'm only finding the "surge protection" OR the "overload protection" listed. So either I didn't find one previously or it's no longer on there??

So....can anyone confirm whether or not the "overload protection" means surge protection or not?
