KikiKruiser Posted January 26, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 26, 2016 Just curious- when we cruise Europe it's easy to find free WIFI usually in the shops next to or near the ports. How is it in the ports on the Australia/New Zealand cruises?
azdmelani Posted January 27, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 27, 2016 I'd be curious to know this also!
Jacs Posted January 28, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 28, 2016 It's pretty similar. Around NZ it was easy to find a cafe with wifi where you could get access while having lunch, plus places like Dunedin actually have free wifi zones in the city center. Dunedin also had it available it the dock. Australia is the same, just find a cafe advertising free wifi with purchase, or McDonald's all have free wifi. Kiwi Kruzer Posted January 28, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 28, 2016 In NZ most of the old phone boxes have been left and are now wifi spots.....as well as lots of cafes, McDonalds ,Public Libraries etc
Murgat Posted January 28, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 28, 2016 (edited) In terms of really free wifi NZ have it over us here in OZ. There was a free Telstra service from phone booths but that has been phased out and now it is only free to Telstra customers ( well sort of free) . In Sydney harbour ferries have wifi hot spots and both Circular Quay and Central railway stations have free wifi hot spots. Otherwise it is the usual Gloria Jeans, McDonalds and more expensive cafes. Some tourist attractions E.g. The National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour and libraries have free wifi. To get email access you will need to have access via a web based email site. Outlook and other email clients do not seem to work. Google free wifi in (city) and you will get some answers for other places. As a side benefit it is across the road from the Botanic Gardens.

whimsy7 Posted January 29, 2016 #8 Share Posted January 29, 2016 NZ does free Wifi well. many of the ports that cruise ships visit have free wifi in those ports. Wellington - on our first visit there, wifi was free around the waterfront. think it is now free in the whole downtown area. Dunedin - free wifi near the tourist information centre in the Octagon area Picton - we went to the Library and accessed free wifi outside the building Auckland and Napier - free in the city centre
Karennella Posted January 31, 2016 #9 Share Posted January 31, 2016 I am afraid that internet in general is not one of the high points of Australia. We live only 25ks from the centre of Sydney and have endless hassles with our internet. We await the coming of the National Broadband Network but are not even scheduled as far as we know, not being in a marginal electorate.

We await the coming of the National Broadband Network but are not even scheduled as far as we know, not being in a marginal electorate. Frankly the NBN is a major disappointment. It seems that the ISPs are using it as an excuse to bump prices or reduce data allowance and They are then charging to keep your phone number and apparently in a power outage the phone (even a standard phone not cordless) will only be useable for three hours. Ast year peopl around here had 7 days without power, so that would also be 7 days without a phone.
