macedontraveler Posted April 8, 2016 #1 Share Posted April 8, 2016 This was our 1st time on Celebrity, and the Summit was a good choice. We flew to San Juan a day ahead and booked a hotel & shuttle to the ship through the cruise line. Both were a bit tenuous. The Summit is a nice size - not too big yet big enough that it didn't seem crowded. The Dining Room, Bartenders and Cabin/Housekeeping staff were wonderful, there was a nice selection of food on the MDR dinner menu, the dancers, singers and music groups excellent, the excursion check-in well organized and the disembarkation was smooth. :) On the other hand, the Summit is getting old & worn and needs a serious makeover, retrofitting and refurbishing! In spite of the staff's best efforts, the ship didn't appear in top shape and an odor of sewage was noticeable on occasion. Celebrity might also think about moving the kitchen closer to the MDR. Again, we had a great waiter, but by the time my dinner entrees got to the table they were not hot. Lastly, a voucher from our travel agent for Priority Check-in wasn't honored at the pier (the National Account Manager was notified). :( None of the items were bad enough to not sail on Celebrity again, but I would look at a newer or more recently refurbished ship. Thanks for the review. We are sailing on the Summit next winter and I'm interested in people's take on the ship. I had a couple of questions for you. What did you mean by the hotel and shuttle booked through the cruise line were tenuous? You thought they were vague or questionable? Where was the odor of sewage? That would put me off, too. Glad you had a good time.

kenevenpar Posted April 8, 2016 #4 Share Posted April 8, 2016 Are you indicating that there was not evidence of the recent retrofit? It was within the last month. Thanks!
squidward Posted April 8, 2016 #5 Share Posted April 8, 2016 (edited) In fairness, what just happened was a brief dry dock, not retrofit. The retrofit occurred when Summit was Solstice-ized a few years back. I have sailed on Summit many times, including last week's sailing, and the public areas of the ship have never looked better IMHO. The staterooms, with the exception of the RS and PS, haven't been refreshed in a long time and definitely are showing their age. I wonder if the OP's comments about the ship being worn refer to the staterooms? That I would agree with. Rare garyl62 Posted April 12, 2016 #8 Share Posted April 12, 2016 We were also on the 3/26 sailing and thought the trip was great! We had a sky suite so we may not have experienced some out the original poster's experiences, but our dining experience in Luminae was outstanding and if we wanted to look at very small things I could find some age showing. However nothing in our room looked worn or old, the decks were clean, the theater seemed up to date, Luminae was a highlight and Michaels club had an "old school traditional club" feel yet not worn in it's furnishings. Now, if I would have sensed a sewage odor I would have been put off, but we didn't experience that. We embarked around 3:00 after arriving on Saturday and walked right on with no lines at all. Debarking was very smooth, but as a suite guest we by passed a long line and many of us (we were escorted as a group) commented that missing that line was worth the extra cost right there. Only complaint had nothing to do with Celebrity, but we had a 3:00PM departure and we could not go through security at the airport until 4 hours before departure so we had to wait by the ticket counter for 2 1/2 hours and there are no benches or chairs in that area of the airport. Next time we'll do an excursion with airport drop off, or book a hotel and return the next day. Overall, we enjoyed it so much, the service, the size of the ship, and the amenities, we booked two more cruises for spring break in 2017 and 2018. Can't wait to go back! So good to hear your good review - I just booked for RT San Juan 2018 (the earlier the better in my book;) ) What was your itinerary? I've not been to the Southern Caribbean so am looking forward to some new ports.... I've been to San Juan several times and love it.
