jplewis Posted October 18, 2005 #1 Share Posted October 18, 2005 Can anyone tell me what they think of the Regal? As she is so different from the others I would just like to hear some opinions. The cruise from San Francisco to Alaska looks really interesting. Thanks for any info.
Strawberry Posted October 18, 2005 #2 Share Posted October 18, 2005 :) We love the Regal Princess and have taken a number of cruises on her. We have two booked on the Regal in 2006. (The 10 day Alaska cruise is one of them.) We have traveled this particular itinerary on the Regal and on the Sky Princess and we really like it. The Regal is a smaller ship with a different personality. You get to the know the crew and the other passengers. Getting around the ship is easier since it is smaller and more manageable. However, some people think that it is a boring ship and that there isn't much to do -- if someone likes the really big glitzy ships then Regal may not be their cup of tea. dchip Posted October 18, 2005 #3 Share Posted October 18, 2005 We sailed the Regal Princess from San Francisco to New York City last September. It was the greatest cruise yet. She is a smaller ship but has so many great features. We especially enjoyed the hot tubs on the Aloha deck. They were only steps from our cabin. It is a wonderful deck to enjoy the scenery. Lots of lounge chairs out there also. There is a wonderful observation space that is attached to the casino...the only draw back in my opinion because there was smoke. But the view from there is fabulous. We had a balcony room but the balconies on the Regal are very small, be aware of that fact. There is plenty of closet and drawer space and the shower is much larger than the newer ships. When we sailed there was only the traditional dining, which is fine by us. I do think that now there may be an alternative dining room. They did set up the back of the buffet area to serve as a bistro and folks seemed pleased. I am sure many more cruisers will fill you in on the Regal because she is a favorite with many of us. Happy cruising, Denise
calikak Posted October 18, 2005 #4 Share Posted October 18, 2005 I got engaged on the Regal in 2001, and it was my very first cruise, so she holds a special place in my heart. We really enjoyed our cruise and found the ship to be beautiful and well laid-out. There's no Anytime dining, but we usually do Traditional anyway, so we didn't mind that at all. We've kept our eyes open for another itinerary on the Regal that works for us because she's really a wonderful ship.
NancyM Posted October 18, 2005 #5 Share Posted October 18, 2005 I loved the Regal; but then, I love the smaller ships. I spent 15 days this past December going through the Panama Canal on the Regal. It was the best cruise yet. She's showing her age just a bit,.. but the cabins were large (esp. the bathrooms!), the crew were always personable and your fellow passengers a 'hoot'. I never had a problem finding a great lounge chair .. they were always available.. no saving for hours!! Food was great and entertainment was fun! I'd take her again any day! -Nancy

GTVCRUISER Posted October 18, 2005 #7 Share Posted October 18, 2005 I just got back from 10 days on the Regal , this was my first Princess cruise, I think I will go on one of their bigger ships next time.
Murphey Posted October 18, 2005 #8 Share Posted October 18, 2005 We are sailing on her next week. We last sailed on her in 2000 when at that time she was the largest ship we had ever been on....my how times change!!! We will be interested to see what she looks like in comparison to our memories. One thing we are looking forward to is that the staterooms are larger than the new ships and the Regal/Crown had the best piano bar venue at sea!!! I will try to post from her during our cruise. Druke I Posted October 18, 2005 #9 Share Posted October 18, 2005 Sailing from San Francisco and under the Golden Gate Bridge is a real thrill. The Regal is a great ship - we've been on her twice, and are booked again, 'round the Horn, Mar 06. She handles rough waters very well (and it is often rough just outside the Golden Gate, in an area known locally as the "potato patch").
SharkieRools Posted October 18, 2005 #10 Share Posted October 18, 2005 Been on her 3 times, the latest was the one you are looking at - 10 days R/T SF to Alaska. Here is the review, pictures, patters, etc.: Alaska Cruise 2005
cruznliz Posted October 18, 2005 #11 Share Posted October 18, 2005 We've been on the Regal twice. Once in 2000 and once in 2002 with another coming up fast. We also thoroughly enjoyed the hot tubs on Aloha Deck and the forward observation area in the casino. The only drawback I can remember is that the Promenade Deck does not go all the way around. It is just on either side of the ship. In a way that was an advantage because no one was ever out there. We had it to ourselves many times. ;) Our own private balcony!! :D

jplewis Posted October 18, 2005 Author #13 Share Posted October 18, 2005 Thanks for all the info, folks. I do like the smaller ships so will probably book one of those dates. Thanks also for the great review. For you that done this in May what time do you reccommend for dining? I hate to have to get ready for dinner while the ship leaves port but if you're already sailing it may not matter. Patsy
suziehmkr Posted November 16, 2005 #14 Share Posted November 16, 2005 Has Regal Princess been doing the 10-day for more than just this year (& the 2006 schedule)? I am looking for a RT out of San Francisco for 2007 and wondering if we can expect to see Regal doing this route again during that time frame. DAllenTCY Posted November 16, 2005 #17 Share Posted November 16, 2005 The Regal Princess will be doing an around the world tour in 2007, not the same 10 day sailings from SF or San Diego that it has been doing. The only SF ship will continue to be the Dawn Princess. Princess cruises will not have any sailings from San Diego in 2007 as it looks now. suziehmkr Posted November 16, 2005 #18 Share Posted November 16, 2005 Dawn for the Mexican Riviera, right? Wonder if they will position another ship for the RT Alaska out of SF? Anyone have any ideas? DH hates to fly, and a RT out of SF is perfect for us to cruise Alaska. Would like to stay with Princess because of Glacier Bay. Hmmmmm lots of thinking & waiting, & more waiting for itineraries. Thanks for the info on Regal though!

Right when the 10-day Alaska sailings start – hmmm…gotta wonder.
suziehmkr Posted November 16, 2005 #20 Share Posted November 16, 2005 Now that sounds like a better ship for a 10-day Alaska. I vote yes! ;)
Pam in CA Posted November 16, 2005 #21 Share Posted November 16, 2005 I loved the Regal Princess for the following reasons: * Fewer passengers with more public space * Several lounges with different activities during the day and entertainment at night (excellent piano player in the Adagio lounge pre-dinner) * Open public aft decks where you can lounge in the sun or shade. The aft part of the ship is not enclosed and sold as aft cabins. * More spacious cabins * Larger bathrooms with a full, tub-sized shower in every cabin * More storage space than on the larger ships * An omelette / egg station in the buffet at breakfast; pasta station in the buffet at lunch I could go on... would love to go back on the Regal again. cruzisme Posted November 16, 2005 #23 Share Posted November 16, 2005 we are waitlisted for the first sitting. What is the bistro setup--is that like Horizon Court blocked off for the bistro (example: on the Sun Sterling steakhouse is part of H. Court)? Is there a charge for the bistro dinners? anyone know how obstructed the view is in the handicapped cabins on Dolphin deck?
Aussie Gal Posted November 16, 2005 #24 Share Posted November 16, 2005 jplewis, Hi Patsy, I have been trying to get in touch with you but to no avail. We are going on the Regal in 53 days time. We are doing a 21 day cruise around South America so I can tell you all about it when I return. I did send you an email to your hotmail address but do not know if you received it. Please send an email to jennielynton@hotmail and I will give you my new address. Jennie
